personhood research group first meme drop
Diagram titled "Pace Layering": six nested curved layers, each with an arrow showing its speed of change. From fastest (outermost) to slowest (innermost): masks, brands, avatars; legal personhood; the moral subject; the social and relational self; sapience; sentience. The outermost arrow is a long tangled squiggle, and the arrows grow shorter, thicker, and straighter toward the innermost layer, indicating progressively slower change.

my latest for Mud and Dust! This one's about websites, LLMs as a driving force for online enclosure, and various other toxic incentives threatening the open web open.substack.com/pub/isthisan...
Promotional card for a Substack essay. Over a washed-out lavender photograph of mycelium spreading through soil, with faded miniature browser windows floating among the fungal threads — one reads 'i wrote this website for you. next' — large serif text says 'The Real Dead Internet Theory,' with the subtitle 'You may not know what the Open Web is but you'll miss it when it's gone.' At the bottom: ISTHISANART.SUBSTACK.COM and an orange Substack logo

Promotional graphic for an essay titled "Terminal Surrender" by Sarah Friend. Photograph of an installation in a white gallery space: a black-framed bed with a rumpled cream duvet, surrounded by four monitors on articulated arms that arch over it. A keyboard and headphones rest on the bedding, cables trail across the floor, and an exposed computer with a bank of green-glowing cooling fans sits on a platform sliding out from beneath the bed frame. A blue banner in the lower corner reads "ESSAY."

Danger Testing, a fun new team launching an app a week (“dropping apps like songs”) are a perfect example of my software-becomes-content thesis www.dangertesting.com
Screenshot of dark-mode text with a highlighted passage reading: "A small app will become as disposable as an instagram post. Software will become content, and the vibe coder may look more and more like an influencer."

as you salivate over the shoe company Allbirds making its pivot to AI and its frothy 582% valuation increase, remember this all already happened

Screenshot of a paragraph from "Death of a Software Developer," with most of the text highlighted. It reads: "As this split develops, there will need to evolve new terms to distinguish between these modalities, because there will be jobs specifically for the vibe coder approach, but I doubt 'Vibecoder' will make it into a job post. A euphemism will probably be required. It may be 'Junior Developer', but that doesn't seem right either. The vibe coder does not aspire to become a Senior Developer. These are not different tiers of the same skill tree."

The back of a dark Toyota RAV4 with a spare tire cover, covered in white handwritten text and drawings. The rear window reads: "LLMs aren't conscious but you should still nice to them. them. Kant was right. Being mean to anything ruins your soul!" The spare tire cover reads "THE Kant Car" with a drawing of an octopus or squid below it. A small cephalopod is also drawn near the Toyota logo. The Connecticut license plate reads "SQUIDS." The car is stopped at a red light in traffic.

when you whip Claude you whip yourself
A screenshot of a tweet by user "sui" (@birdabo) on a black background. The tweet text in large white caps reads: "SOMEONE MADE A DIGITAL WHIP TO MAKE CLAUDE WORK FASTER" followed by a skull emoji. Below is a screenshot showing a computer desktop with folders labeled "biscuit" and "partyhat" and zip files "belly.zip" and "biscuit.zip". A terminal window titled "Read and execute Task.txt file" shows Claude Code attempting several web searches (about AI pins, consumer hardware retention, voice assistant limitations), each followed by "Interrupted · What should Claude do instead?" After each interruption, the user has typed abusive variations like "FASTERFASTERGO FASTERWork FASTERFASTERFaster CLANKER" and "Speed it up clanker". Claude replies "I'll write the research document directly from my knowledge:" before being interrupted again. Near the bottom, Claude is shown "Ruminating… (thought for 1s)" and then outputs "Work FASTER / Faster CLANKER" — apparently having given up and started repeating the abuse back. A hand-drawn illustration of a whip is overlaid on the right side of the terminal.

MeetMarket, the new decentralized privacy-respecting alternative to Grindr from @donjackoghue.bsky.social is a great example of vibecoded software serving new demographics meetmarket.io
White serif text on dark background reads: "Jevons paradox tells us technological improvements that improve the efficiency of a resource's use lead to a rise, rather than a fall, in the consumption of that resource. The coming software renaissance will lead to more genuine creativity in cultural areas that have been underserved by the software developer, possibly for demographic reasons. The popularity of Charlota Blunarova's vibecoded multiplayer embroidery simulator, Common Thread is a great early example. The software developer is white or asian, male, and youngish. There will be a rise in shipped software for everyone else."

Cover image for "Death of a Software Developer" on isthisanart.substack.com. Dark green-tinted composite of two images: the upper half shows what appears to be a detail of a figurative oil painting, the lower half shows multiple monitors displaying code — looks like Solidity smart contract output and Python terminal errors. The title is set in large white serif type.

when people say artists need to work with emerging technology more in order to be relevant, it's not a controversial new take. it's an old take, literally an ancient take for most of human history painting was the state of the art of image-making technology

Remote Viewing, a new sculptural work that displays (to scale, one-to-one) what Google Earth sees of the location it's placed in currently on view at the Fellbach Triennial Kleinplastik 🛰️
The sculpture appears as a pinkish/reddish square face up on the floor of a large exhibition hall. You can see that its surface is striped, but not much else. Behind it are sculptures and video artworks mounted on a large scaffoldA close up of one corner of the sculpture. You can see that the main pink/red striped image is very pixelated. In the corner is an infographic - the text is too small to read but it shows views compiled from different bands of landsat 8 and 9 with bright colours that contrast strongly with the main imageAnother close up of one corner of the sculpture, also showing an infographic. This one has an expanded view that is recognizable as the roof of a building, with the same color palette as the main imageThe sculpture is sitting on the ground, face up. It's about 8cm tall and 1x1 metre square with an extruded aluminum frame around the edge. Facing up is a printed image that shows pixel artifacts of a reddish/pinkish striped pattern (it's the roof of the exhibition hall). The box is lit from within by LEDs and slightly glowing
