Turns out (i) myxospores are actually coated in exopolysaccharide (making them sticky!), (ii) biosurfactant polysaccharide is needed to help them disperse, and (iii) spore "coat" polysaccharide instead forms a sub-surface cortex layer!🦠🔬 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Biosurfactant polysaccharide drives dispersal of exopolysaccharide-coated myxospores in Myxococcus xanthus
Bacterial spores are highly resilient cell forms, yet the organization of their protective surface layers in diderm species remains largely unexplored. For the social predatory soil bacterium Myxococc...

Mechanism of trans-envelope bacterial polysaccharide secretion in Class-3 outer-membrane polysaccharide export (OPX) protein systems - Nature Communications
Bacteria secrete polysaccharides essential for colonization and infections. Here, the authors reveal the structure and mechanism of WzaB, a Class-3 OPX protein, uncovering a distinct trans-envelope se...

Found a printed copy at home of one of my recent grant proposals, figured I could use it as tinder to light the wood stove. Worked like a charm! Although, there's something very "à propos" about watching your proposed research project go up in flames... 🔥🔥🔥

Microbial Primer: Biosurfactants – the ABCs of microbial surface-active metabolites
Microbial surfactants (biosurfactants) are low-molecular-weight amphiphilic secondary metabolites synthesized by a wide range of micro-organisms, including bacteria, yeasts and fungi. These compounds ...
