SEND provision was Lord Shinkwin's focus in the Lords debate into VAT on independent school fees. He said: "Nowhere is [the counterintuitive nature of this policy] more apparent than the case of pupils with SEND. They and their hard-pressed families deserve not just an answer but a rethink."

Do Fairfield Prep have a future chess grandmaster on their hands? Year 6 pupil Tara has reached the finals of the UK Open Blitz Championships, a major UK tournament, for the second successive year. She came top in her qualifying round at Nottingham. Brilliant stuff!

Lord Lexden led a debate in the House of Lords last week on the impact of VAT on independent schools. He argued that the policy was an "imposition" and that "a review is essential", before ending by saying "surely every child and every school matters".

An incredible life and a wonderful legacy to leave. Dr Beryl Gilroy was London’s first black headteacher and the Beryl Gilroy Forum is designed to attract more into teaching, with individuals from black and other ethnic backgrounds encouraged to attend.

New guidelines will see deep-fried food banned from school dinners, while fibre, wholegrains, fresh fruit and vegetables will be given a boost. The Beacon School is helping children develop healthy eating habits from an early age, combining wholesome meals with practical food education 🍎

Florence Golding, a Godolphin and Latymer pupil, has created a Latin audio guide for the Roman Baths, bringing the ancient site to life. The guide, which is available for visitors to download, is narrated by Sir Stephen Fry and includes Florence's written Latin translation. Well done, Florence! 👏

ISC schools employ 58,949 full-time teachers. This is down 1,276 compared to last year’s figure. Despite the decline, independent schools continue to operate small class sizes with a pupil-teacher ratio of 8.5 to 1, offering more tailored teaching to students.

ISC schools provide SEND support for 123,823 pupils. Of these, 15,356 have an EHCP – a 62% increase on last year. Independent special schools provide quality education and care, giving young people with SEND equity of opportunity that would not be possible elsewhere.

19,000 pupils have left independent schools in the last year. Representing the largest drop since ISC records began, the figure far surpasses the government’s estimations. Despite this, independent schools continue to provide an excellent education to over 500,000 pupils.

New data from ISC’s forthcoming Census shows North East England saw the biggest drop in independent school pupil numbers last year – 6.4% across the region. In every region bar one, the rate of decline has increased from 2025, demonstrating the continued impact of VAT on fees.
