A plot description:

Miss Blackwell has done an excellent job building a safe life for herself. A candlemaker of the Mask Market, she can run her shop without anyone knowing she was born with a terrible curse. Everyday she slowly turns to stone from the legs up, becoming heavy and immobile until blessed sleep resets her each night. Her cane gets her to work on bad days, and her shop is well respected in the community. She’s content with what she’s managed, until she learns of a lord funding an expedition for a cursebreaker.

That lord? The stifling stepfather Blackwell spent the past decade hiding from. He commissioned a party to brave the horrors of the Underwoods, a forest of perpetual darkness to bring him the artifact for his own gain. Danger be damned, Blackwell dons her mask and volunteers to join the expedition in hopes of taking the cursebreaker for herself. But the deeper they venture the more attached she grows to those she plans to double cross, including an aging lady knight and curmudgeonly woodsman. Worst of all is Fox, their roguish guide who seems determined to endear himself to her.

Wearing a mask is easy, befriending those that could betray her to her worst enemy is not.

A sample of writing:

“About that,” she offered him a berry from her bowl, “You normally don’t take things too personally. I mean, the jackals sang a whole song to make fun of you, and you were mildly annoyed and a little amused.”
“No bait this time, Miss Blackwell.” He plucked the fruit from her hand with his teeth, swallowing it quickly.
She gave him a sly look, “I want to know why.”
“Must I answer?” his face dropped.
“It’d be nice if you did.” Blackwell offered him another, and he snatched it from her hand again. Rolling his eyes, Fox observed all that surrounded them and levelled a bored look on her.
“In two hours, exactly, this little gathering will end. If you are still interested, and if I am still inclined, we can sneak away and I will tell you. Not all, for I am still privilege to some secrets. But a few things will be revealed. Does that satisfy the lady’s curious mind?”
She made a show of tapping her forefinger on her chin, earning a genuine grin from their enigmatic guide, “I think it does.”
