Dolly Parton was one of my first favorite musicians and I feel so lucky to have played a small part in her music video rendition of Imagine as a child. She was an shinning ray of light and a true gem. m.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bmk...

PSA: I want to highlight that AI does not work as a search engine or a research assistant. People think it does, that it helps them summarize complex papers in a way that is easy to understand but it cannot replace the work of actually reading and tackling with information.

The only good solution left - put 160 writers in a room, have them handwrite short stories in a Mr Beast style tournament. Surviving 10 gets published.

Someone please make a cozy game about being a reference librarian who has to research topics patrons ask them about on the library database. You get points for speed and accuracy but there are no wrong answers. Misinformation will lose points. Sorta like Papers Please but solarpunk. #games

And finally, our Year 6 Kickstarter is ongoing! We're hovering at $2800, and we'd love to get over the $3000 hump! Every little bit makes a difference. With your help, we can keep funding another great year of speculative fiction by immigrant & diaspora writers: www.kickstarter.com/projects/kho...

Its a funny day when a manga about little league baseball has more pathos and low-key more horror than the Backrooms movie.

There has been a war for a while now from the tech companies as they try to reshape the internet into 1 of 3 forms of exploited capital - land (metaverse), commodities (crypto/nft), & “labor” (AI).

I love how I can tell my parents multiple times about the new D-line stops in LA and they are like “meh, whatever, our daughter is ranting again” And then i read them a quote from LA Times about how you can now get from Union Station to Beverly Hills in 21 mins and it blows their minds.

Empathy has been horribly co-opted in recent years by some of the worst people, but i genuinely believe that empathy starts with a curiosity in the world around you and a willingness to interact with it with kindness and some wonder.

I was at this panel and Cassie said some wild stuff. But I do sympathize with the issues she laid out that she claimed AI addressed for. Market pressures, the need to make money, insecurity as a writer, and mental health issues. AI promised to be a quick fix to all of that rather than the—

This makes me think of the stories my mom tells me of the dudes in her meditation class who will interrupt the lecture to demand direct answers, all so they can race to the certificate, so they can become “teachers” themselves. They miss the point entirely and the whole class suffers.

Give yourself a timer (15 min), write by hand with a pen, don’t let yourself backtrack or re-read what you wrote. Don’t stop writing until the timer goes off. If it goes off and you find yourself in a grove, keep going until you’ve run out of words. Then re-read.

NEW: ALA strongly denounces new federal book banning legislation introduced in Congress, HR 7661. As ALA President Sam Helmick said, "Parents, not politicians, should guide their children's reading." Call your Rep and tell them to oppose this new bill. More from ALA: www.ala.org/news/2026/02...
The American Library Association strongly denounces new federal book banning legislation proposed in Congress. Call your Reps. Tell them to oppose H.R. 7661. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121

American Library Association, Show Up For Our Libraries"Parents, not politicians, should guide their children’s reading. In our school, campus, and public libraries, materials are selected by trained literacy professionals who understand child development and community needs. Their work is grounded in one clear purpose: helping young people become lifelong readers.

H.R. 7661 isn’t fundamentally about protecting kids. It’s about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on the shelves. That should concern anyone who believes in the freedom to read and the right of families to make decisions for themselves.” - ALA President Sam Helmick"Rather than targeting librarians and teachers, Congress should invest in them. The Right to Read Act offers a better path, supporting well-staffed and well-resourced school libraries, strengthening evidence-based literacy instruction, and protecting the dedicated professionals who help young people discover books that open doors and expand horizons.

When we trust families, support educators, and protect the freedom to read, our young people thrive.” - ALA President Sam Helmick.

the Black Panthers were right
IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK
JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS.
WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK.
AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS.
THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES.
IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.
