Most of us know to get our iron checked. But a standard test measures hemoglobin. Ferritin, your stored iron, drops first and can sit low for months while results look normal. Low iron without anemia is at least twice as common. Worth asking about.

Some families call heavy periods normal for generations. Sometimes it is von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder, easily missed and slow to diagnose, more than 14 years. The ongoing blood loss can cause iron deficiency anemia. Worth one question.

How common is anemia? The latest WHO estimates put it at around 3 in 10 women of reproductive age, and more than 1 in 3 pregnant women. Iron deficiency is the most common cause. Common is not the same as solved.
