Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Men så du noen gang de sagnomsuste bøttene med myrlik?!

Oh yeah, I mean the market and system has just been so overtly broken for a while that I've sort of known that was part of the package - if that makes sense? That so many people, even a few that I respected, seem to have given up on critical thinking *so quickly*? That did surprise me.

Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
And yes, I'm well aware that DORA already exist - I want people in the position to use it, TO ACTUALLY USE IT.

Assessment boards need to actually consider the quality of the work rather than the (sometimes) artificial ranking of the journal and length of someone's publishing list. When they see that you've basically split what should've been one text into five? Count it as one.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I want thoroughly worked through texts, coherent articles that haven't been split into smaller works to maxismise the article count. I want you, and myself, to think better, longer, and stop publishing just for the sake of filling up your ORCid profile.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
And yes, the funding and publishing system has been broken for a while. I know what I think the solution is, and it's not PRODUCING even more (shit) writing quicker than ever before.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
AI is writing the work, reviewing it, funding it - the loop is endless. I don't fear that AI will reach "consciousness", I fear we'll abandon all critical thinking and will to think our own thoughts. Meaning we'll end up BELIEVING AI is better than us. Cause we've lost our ability to recognise SHIT.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I haven't reviewed any research proposals, but given the increasing number of submissions I can only imagine the abysmal state of those texts. No wonder reviewers are saying no, or even outsourcing the peer review to AI. Which is just... How bloody dark is that?!
210
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
And it's so obvious too. Editorial boards see it, and we discuss it. Your text is dull, without friction, without depth. It flows too well, and not at all, at the same time. It lacks references, and reads like a bad literature review, with crucial references missing (!) and without page numbers.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
It absolutely cannot turn disjointed ideas and poor prose into "gold", especially not in more niche fields. It may sound nice and convincing when doing a quick read-through - when looking more closely though? Fluff. Predictable and cliched.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I am no Luddite, and I see the many very useful ways of using AI, generative or whatever, I've even tested a few of them and appreciated the time it saved me. But the actual writing - thinking - to convey meaning and interesting thoughts in a clear, logical way? For now, AI is producing shit.
110
Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I am becoming increasingly disillusioned with academia these days. It's not about the work market or the system. It's about the people within the system that are so willing and even eager to outsource all of their thinking to machines.

There's currently more than 26 000 detecting finds that have been handed in to the museums. Case workers are steadily chipping away at an increasing backlog, focused on getting through it, without losing the standard of *all* finds actually being catalogued and accessible.

Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
The work done by case workers and heritage practitioners at the archaeological museums in Norway is so crucial to our management system. Without them, researchers would have to start from scratch and the public would not have (fully!) open access to information about a wealth of finds.

Irmelin @irmelin.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Such a good update on the Mørstad hoard! Spectacular work from Anne, as usual - ensuring that not only more than 2500 yearly detecting finds are accessioned but on top of that has also managed to *catalogue* a steady stream of coins. #archaeology 🏺 www.forskning.no/vikingtiden/...

Article in Norwegian! The publishing system is broken. That has been clear for a while. Having been on the end that have to find peer reviewers for more than a decade... It's become so, so, so difficult. It's a major bottle neck in the workflow for everyone involved. www.khrono.no/tidsskriftet...

Only halfway through this: "Write! Craftsmanship in non-fiction" by Anders Johansen. It seems like a gem so far - so many of the author's descriptions and feelings about writing are resonating with me! Of course, he writes wonderfully too.

Starting December with yet another cold. Oslo's dark and wet. Behind on everything at home. Swamped at work. Trying to embrace the general messiness that this season of life is giving, and after some "admin" work I'll ease into this week with reading about writing. One of my favourite topics!

Please help me spread the word and share widely! Although the material scope is set, there's still a lot of flexibility within that. There's some benefits to doing a PhD in Norway, e.g. you're employed with everything that includes (paid sick leave, paid parental leave, etc.) + a decent-ish pay.

Quoting because, well, this is true everywhere. We see it in Europe and in Norway. Latest polling shows that FrP, our far right populist party, is the country's biggest (luckily, I guess, we have more than two parties).
