An ecommerce store in #NZ suggesting I look for "murder drones"... This could an LLM suggestion or the result of people searching for them - and I'm not sure which is actually worse? 🤔

So ahh yeah, looks like there’s a bit of flu going around in NZ. Almost double last year’s hospitalisations. Out food co-op almost didn’t get food delivered yesterday as half the warehouse staff were off work! www.phfscience.nz/digital-libr...

The wind warning from the NZ weather service is only orange, not red, because gusts are “only” up to 130km/hr I think they dun goofed on this one and it’ll be bad tomorrow though
Area: Wellington, also Marlborough east of Seddon including the Sounds
Period: 21hrs from 9pm Thu, 25 Jun - 6pm Fri, 26 jun
Forecast: Severe gale southerlies with damaging gusts of 130 km/h in exposed places. Low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

I may have just bought a giant 3-tier brewing system as I can't resist a bargain. I have no idea what I'm doing... anyone want to help me spurge my grist into wort? (I have no idea what that means 😂). Plan is to make it available to anyone nice. Just need somewhere in Wellington for it to live!

I’m playing a real-life version of “Is it Cake?” with the new released food compliance exemption for all types of cake in Aotearoa NZ - the only class of food exempt! How soft does a biscuit need to before it’s a cake? When does banana bread become banana cake? www.mpi.govt.nz/dmsdocument/...

(1) For the purposes of this notice:

cake means an item of soft sweet food traditionally made from a mixture that may include flour, fat, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients, baked and sometimes iced or decorated. This definition also includes cakes made with substitute ingredients, for example to make the cake dairy-free or egg-free.

Shelf-stable cake means a cake which may safely be consumed (together with any filling or decoration) when it is stored at room temperature until it is eaten, or cake that is intended to be consumed within 3-5 days and which does not need to be refrigerated during this time to keep it safe to eat.

(2)

All terms used in this notice and that are defined in the Food Act 2014 or Food Regulations 2015, but not defined in this notice, have the same meaning as in that Act or Regulations

Just reading through the full report, strange the media aren’t following up the fact that the IPCA were alerted in 2018 and just brush it off!
Highlighted text:

11. Issue 7 of this report sets out the IPCA's involvement in the matter and describes actions we have taken, and have committed to take, to address any deficiencies in our complaint receipt and handling. Several people we spoke to told us that one of their considerations when failing to act on complaints made against Deputy Commissioner McSkimming, was that the IPCA had known about the matter for years, had investigated and had found there was no substance to the complaints. While it may be true to say that, by virtue of being tagged in a Facebook post in 2018, we had some knowledge, we did not have any further context until 2023. More importantly, senior officers knew that we had not in fact investigated, let alone found there was no substance.

Wonderful news today that the highly politicised 'Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum' has been fixed. The Marxist 'big ideas' such as 'Mãori history is the foundational and continuous history of Aotearoa New Zealand!' and 'The course of Aotearoa New Zealand's histories has been shaped by the use of power' are GONE.

My tuahine (sister) on what it’s like to run and manage Māori land #NZPol… It’s actually 12k cases but they’re only getting through 2.8k a year and 5k cases a year are added. At that rate - if they processed FIFO* - it would take 4.2 years before they would get to an application submitted today.
“Imagine running a trust or an incorporated society where every time you vote in new trustees or trustees resign, you have to have that reviewed in detail and approved by a special court, which takes on average a year to make a decision.

And then every time that trust wants to change it’s deed or constitution it has to advertise the details and reasons in a local paper, and then any decision has to go to that same special court, and wait a year or more.

And if anyone challenges a decision you again have to go to that court.

And the years tick by and people get hōha with waiting ‘cos the rules won’t allow decisions anymore, so decisions stop getting made and people stop coming.

And that court is only for a special kind of people, not everyone.

That court is the Māori Land Court.““Last I heard it has about 30,000 current cases to deal with and only about 50 staff spread across the country.

Originally the Native Land Court, it was established in 1865 to convert customary Māori land tenure into individual titles and facilitate land sales to settlers. Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 expanded the court's jurisdiction and its role, focusing on the protection and promotion of Māori land - once most of the country had been taken and hapū and whānau had been scattered often landless and penniless, with whānau connections severed.

It takes a determined people to come together again and take back their land.”A Māori Land Court statistics infographic shows key performance metrics across different districts. The court has a significant backlog with 12,042 applications currently pending, while creating 5,208 new applications annually but completing only 2,881. The court also conducted 5,567 hearings. Waikato-Maniapoto and Waiariki districts handle the largest volumes across most categories. The data reveals a concerning trend where new applications (5,208) significantly exceed completions (2,881), indicating the backlog is growing by approximately 2,300 cases per year, suggesting processing times of over 4 years for new applications.
