And I like that. I like that chance being there. I like the agency to improve, I like giving it to characters in stories because it so often can't equally easily be given to real people. But it does mean I don't get to give missed opportunities the rundown I'd otherwise be interested in writing.

And hopefully you get those opportunities to grow later, and through them, even that hurt heals. But in fiction, I can bop everyone on the head and give them the chance for self improvement when they want to improve. They can become the person they need to be for the relationship to be possible.

And I think that's probably because in reality, people don't always get the opportunities to grow when they would need or want to, and sometimes you can do your best but you're still not the person that a relationship would need you to be. And that's not the end of the world, it just hurts.
