KARAOKE
It started with the kids.
The younger K35 boys were drunk on imported beer and easier nights than they deserved, laughing too loud, singing too badly. The private room was hazy with cigarette smoke, lit in dim purples that caught on glass and sweat and made everyone look softer.
Youngwoo had stayed quiet through it all, tucked into the far corner of the couch with a bottle of beer he hadn’t really touched. Not smiling. Not frowning either. Just... absent.
“Hyung-nim!” One of them called, grinning as he shoved the mic into his face. “Your turn. We’ve never heard you sing.”
“Come on, hyung-nim, just one song!” Another chimed in. “I bet you’ve got some deep, broken-hearted ballad hiding in there.”
Taejoon half-expected Youngwoo to brush them off, as he always did. Youngwoo didn’t perform. He barely even spoke unless it was necessary. Not in front of the crew, at least.
But this time, he stood.
A few of them whooped, thinking they’d won. Someone cued up a bright, sleazy disco track as a joke. But Youngwoo ignored it.
He picked up the remote, canceled the song, and typed something in.
Taejoon watched the screen light up with the title before the first note even played.
Mad World. The Gary Jules version. Slow, stripped down. A funeral dressed as a lullaby.
A few of the boys groaned in mock protest. “Seriously?”
But the moment Youngwoo opened his mouth, they all fell silent.

“All around me are familiar faces—
Worn-out places, worn-out faces—”

His voice caught everyone off guard. Deep. Resonant. Unguarded. A baritone that clung to the edges of the room and made the walls feel closer.
Taejoon felt his own chest go still.
He’d heard Youngwoo hum before, in passing. Maybe a note or two in the shower under his breath. But this was different. This was deliberate. A razor turned inward.
Youngwoo wasn’t singing to entertain. He wasn’t even really singing to them.
He was just letting it out. One verse at a time.

“And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had—”

Taejoon’s fingers tightened around his glass.
He’d noticed things lately.
How Youngwoo was sleeping less. Smoking more. How his smiles never reached his eyes anymore. The new silences that followed him everywhere like a second shadow.
Taejoon kept thinking it was just fatigue. A bad stretch. Something they'd claw their way out of, like they always did.
But this didn’t sound like someone who was tired. It sounded like someone chewing through the bars just to make it stop.
And then… Jason.
Seated at the back of the room, with one arm draped over the back of the couch, drink resting idle in his hand.
Not watching Youngwoo.
Watching him.
Their eyes locked across the room.
Taejoon didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
He didn’t need words. Jason’s eyes said enough.

It wasn’t a question. It never had been.
Normally, Taejoon would’ve looked away. Played dumb. Let the moment pass. But tonight, something in him refused.
Maybe it was the song. Maybe it was the crack in Youngwoo’s voice when he hit the line about drowning sorrow. Maybe it was the four beers, or the years of pretending not to care.
He held Jason’s gaze and stared back. And for the first time, Jason looked away first.
By the time the last note faded, the room felt different. No applause. No teasing. No one quite knew where to look.
Youngwoo stepped back from the mic without a word, like it hadn’t meant anything. He returned to his spot, quiet as before.
But his eyes found Taejoon’s.
For one fleeting second, he smiled.
Not the cocky grin he wore when he wanted to piss someone off. Not the mask. This was smaller. Barely there, as if it weren’t meant to last.
But it was real.
And it was only for him.
