Genomic Predictors of Diapause Polymorphism in the Bark Beetle <fc><fi>Ips typographus</fi></fc> With Implications for Voltinism Potential and Outbreak Dynamics
Diapause polymorphisms shape insect life cycles, affecting their responses to seasonal environmental fluctuations. In the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus, diapause phenotypes, classified as facult...

The frequency of mowing affects the quality of the biomass entering urban food webs!

🧵5/5 Bonus for @mikekaspari.bsky.social Frequent lawn mowing can increase the sodium content of plants by as much as tenfold! I wonder if grazing might have a similar effect? doi.org/10.1016/j.je...

🧵4/5 Our key message: mowing is not only a technical or aesthetic practice. It is also a biogeochemical driver. Urban lawn management should consider not only biodiversity and biomass, but also the elemental quality of matter moving through urban food webs. doi.org/10.1016/j.je...

🧵3/5 This matters because plant biomass is not only “green matter”. It is a multielement resource for herbivores, detritivores, soil organisms and microbes. Changing its chemistry may change nutritional quality, stoichiometric mismatches and contaminant transfer in urban ecosystems.

🧵2/5 We studied roadside lawns in Kraków and Katowice under three mowing regimes: once, three times, or six times per year. Frequent mowing reshaped shoot stoichiometry: increasing P, K, Na and Mg, while decreasing several metals, including Pb.

🧵1/5 Lawns are usually managed and evaluated by what we can see: height, flowers, biomass, tidiness, or biodiversity. But mowing also changes what we cannot see: the elemental composition of plant biomass entering food webs: doi.org/10.1016/j.je... @ioes-ju.bsky.social @filipiakzuza.bsky.social

Our paper is now out in its final form in @natcomms.nature.com ! We show that ancient insect symbionts can undergo extreme, convergent genome reduction to as little as ~50 kb - driven by ecological shifts and symbiont replacement. 🔗 www.nature.com/articles/s41... More below 👇 1/
