My overriding feeling has been that the newer shows have writing that is less and less sophisticated. The crews feel less like professionals and more like a high school gang. Vacuous sentimentality has overridden the moral fortitude of earlier offerings.

The real reason is that a cloaking device on the protagonist ship becomes more of a burden to the plot than an asset. The more awesomely powerful technologies you add the harder you have to work to explain why they don't solve the problem. For the Defiant they gave the Dominion an anti-cloak sensor.

A perennial feature of Star Wars is fans and later writers bending over backwards to make dumb stuff in the originals more serious and coherent when Lucas (rightly) just did not care. The seriousification of Star Wars has been a phenomenon.
