Anisodoris nobilis, the "true sea lemon", is pale tan to a brilliant yellow with black or brown spots between the dorsal tubercles. Some individuals have a distinct citrus odour. It primarily eats the yellow encrusting sponge found on scallop shells, Myxilla incrustans & the yellow Biemma rhadia.

Terebellid tentacles may extend >meter from the tube. The photo shows the concave cross-section with a ciliated tract in a groove. Ciliary action extends the tentacle, then they turn over & the groove faces upwards to collect marine snow. I've seen the tips of the tentacles invert to deposit feed.

3/3 is also found in boulder or cobble fields, although only on the larger (over 20 cm diameter) rocks. It rarely reaches its maximum size, but is about 30 to 40 cm when inflated. It doesn't reproduce by pedal laceration & is seldom found on the floats where the other species is most abundant.

Lewis' moon snail, Polinices lewisii, eats bivalves or occasionally gastropods. It plows along beneath the surface of the sand until it encounters a clam, which it will envelope with its large expandable foot. It will then drill a counter-sunk hole in the shell & rasp out the victim's flesh.

Individuals of Lopholithodes mandtii are slow-growing, with interesting patterns of reproductive behaviour. The males appear to aggregate with the females & follow them around. After the female moults, copulation occurs, followed shortly by laying the encapsulated embryos.

The largest Pacific NW greenling, the Ling Cod, Ophiodon elongatus, is often seen in subtidal bench habitats. Juveniles are frequently seen, often some distance from the nearest rocks. They prey on fishes, octopuses & some crustaceans. Territorial adults will ram the mask of a curious diver.

First Aid & CPR (renew every 2 yrs) to maintain Scientific Diver status. For Science, you don't need surface-supplied air. Nitrox is handy bc it shortens the time between dives. Do some training in temperate/ polar waters. The tropics don't prepare you for cold, low-visibility & weight.
