Roughly, you should let syllables vary in the dimension of writing and reduce variation in the transverse dimension. You may have to stretch or compress individual letters to make the whole syllable more consistent
Rii.dəkt.iv gruup, written vertically
The consonants vary greatly in horizontal spacing. The r, d, and p are written fairly wide because they don’t share horizontal space with other letters. The v shares space with the descender of the i and the kt and gr are in cluster pairs, so these consonants are all compressed. Negative space around the ə is reduced. And the missing onset of the third syllable, iv, is not given any negative space at allRiidəktiv gruup
The syllable components all line up perfectly, vertically. This results in extra negative space around the ə and especially above the i. There is some compression of the consonants kt and gr in clusters, but it’s less than in vertical writing. The v is not compressed at all, so its syllable is fairly wide. The narrowest syllable is ri, because the r is not stretched to make it take up additional space

This is exactly the kind of positive male role model we need
Let me give instances. The Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1276) is very far removed from the present day, and yet from examples of the Emperor Hui-Tsung's writing, executed in the style peculiar to him and termed Slender Gold (Fig. 47), we can infer that he was a person of handsome appearance, and slim, meticulous as to detail, with a somewhat effeminate temperament; we can even affirm that he was slow and measured of speech.異品殊葩共翠抲嫰红拂拂

FIG. 47.—A POEM

By the Emperor Hui Tsung (徽宗), of Sung (宋), a gifted scholar, painter and calligrapher. He distinguished himself in calligraphy by a special style to which he gave the name of Slender Gold. The above is an example. His writing shows the emperor to have been a well-built, handsome figure.

Interesting session today. I feel like I’m back to learning a lot very quickly
一x72
It’s far from perfect but in some of them I managed to get the downward-pointing wedge on the left; in some I managed to get the more difficult upward-pointing wedge on the right with continuous edges; and in some I managed to get a very slight frown curve, very slightly tilted upward to the right乙 mostly
I didn’t come close to getting the corner right on this one but the scoop/hook looks good on a few of them二x30, 十x36, 约约化化群群 (or really 羣羣)
I just felt like I was learning a lot in the process of practicing 十. Mostly about balancing stroke width and character position. And some of the stroke entries/exits look okayA page from 田英章毛笔楷书2500字 showing 群 (written in the style of 欧阳询, i.e. like 羣)

Unlike the Adobe Kaiti characters I’ve been copying before, these images are facsimiles of brushstrokes and I’m finding it much easier to learn from them

Also I loaded up my brush with a ton of ink and I think it helped! It’s more of a pain to clean, and it probably won’t last as long because I don’t know how to get all the ink out of the bases of the fibers, but it’s worth it

Starting to get a little frustrated. But I’m breathing through it
日 x72月 x66
约化群日 written in digital kaishu style with dotted guide lines. Note the wedge at the start of the first vertical stroke; how that stroke thickens at the bottom; the way the corner at the top right flares out on the outside, with a wedge on top and to the right, but rounded on the inside; the way the following vertical stroke thickens uniformly as it goes down from there; the way the two horizontal strokes tilt up slightly; and the way the lower horizontal stroke is slightly thicker on the right end; but how all strokes have even curves around all the ends, no points anywhere (except the small hook at the bottom right). Basically I failed to capture all these details, 72 times in a row月
Very similar details. The big differences here are the left falling vertical stroke, gracefully bending from vertical near the top to ~45º near the bottom; and the big hook at the bottom right, bent slightly upward, even on the inside, but with nearly straight edges on both sides. I also failed to capture these details

You know we’re ready for what’s coming when we’re explaining our value to policymakers
Paragraph near the end of his blog post. Emphasis, mine, in asterisks

Thus, the primary risk, as I see it, is that a lot of people who would have done a PhD in mathematics and gone on to become custodians of the mathematical tradition *will no longer wish to do so*. Those of us who have PhD students, including me, need to try as hard as we can to come up with imaginative ways for them to use their time productively (in consultation with the students themselves, obviously). Whether or not we do a good job with that could make a huge difference to the future of mathematics. A related risk is that the perception among policy-makers will be that mathematicians are no longer needed and that funding will become much harder to come by: *we urgently need to come up with good ways of explaining the value of having a large pool of human mathematical experts*, even if it is no longer part of their role to find new proofs of theorems.

Of course! And thank you for writing in rook script :)
Ənd.ər.stud; wiil haid in dhii meil.baaks
A couple of notes
1. The long vertical strokes at the left aren’t part of every syllable, only the ones with i, ii, e, ei, ai, or oi
2. Consonant clusters are typically written left to right, rather than stacked vertically (see ks in meilbaaks)
3. Similarly, I try to line up my syllables horizontally even if it means blank space at the start of a word
4. It looks like you left out a word or two. I filled in one you might have meant to include, but it’s tough to be sure. This is super common when learning new scripts
5. Officially the spelling of understood has d at the end of the first syllable, rather than the start of the second. This kind of misspelling is, I really mean this, very minor. There are a few words where misplacing a syllable boundary could be genuinely confusing, but I would never expect someone just learning the letters to be aware of how syllable boundaries are placed (it’s unfortunately kind of complicated). Just pointing out why I wrote something differently than you did here

This is kind of awe inspiring
The character 明 written in full cursive on very fancy paper. It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could ever read it, it’s so abstract.

A couple of hints that I understand: It’s clearly at least two radicals, side by side. The first one (日) is clearly shorter than the second one (月).

The 日 is a little more transparent. You can see it’s roughly square, since it’s represented almost as a circle (in regular style it appears closer to square than in this sans serif web font). The clockwise loop around the bottom right corner suggests there is a horizontal line in the middle, no additional vertical lines. The horizontal line at the bottom is completely dropped and you’d just have to be familiar with the possibilities to understand it’s supposed to be there.

You can see 月 is taller than it is wide. There’s the slightest suggestion at the bottom right that there are interior horizontal strokes, but they’re not very clearly specified. You can guess they’re placed higher than the end of the rightmost vertical stroke because otherwise they should be wider; and you can tell they’re to the left of it, rather than crossing it, because otherwise they would be written before the vertical stroke; but the fact that it’s two horizontal strokes you’d just have to know. You’d also just have to know the left vertical stroke is as long as the one on the right, that it curves clockwise, and that there is no horizontal line on the bottom, unlike 日

Honestly I think the cursive r kind of fucks, even if the overall geometric style primes my eye against it. But this stroke is very inelegant
New Instagram logo. The right leg of the n is mostly vertical, fitting the geometric style of the majority of the logo. However at the bottom it sharply turns upward to join the cursive s, which I think is just the wrong call altogether. It puts a kink in the design, a really clear boundary point between the cursive and geometric styles being mashed up here. I think they should have left the n and s unattached, like they did for g and r, or at least given this curve a little more room to breathe
