stages of whale fall in riso || #art #illustration #sciart

ID: risograph print illustration of the stages of whale fall, aka the stages in which a whale's corpse decays. The illustration is shapes and contained within the silhouette of an ornate, gothic cathedral window, which each stage being separated from the next by the window's vertical struts.

The top most shows the whale's tail fin alive & in motion, splash along the ocean's surface. The next panel is labeled mobile scavengers stage. The whale begins to sink, mid-sized scavengers--like small sharks and eels--bite at it's flesh and blood comes out in ribbons.

The second stage is labeled enrichment opportunist. The whale's carcass has been chewed partially open, revealing ribs. Crabs, worms, sea stars, and urchins nibble at it. As it descends, the water around it continues to grow darker.

The third stage is labeled sulfophilic stage. The whale has been chewed down to a skeleton, is covered in small crustations, and is a sulfur yellow.

The final stage is labeled reef stage. The whale is now crumbled, scattered pieces of bone. #goals /end ID

You're not far off! The "jackalope" can actually be traced back to a specific taxidermist (and his desendents are still doing it iirc), but there is a theory that the warty rabbits helped spread the myth and keep it alive this long!

Despite how damning the warts seem, most rabbits make a full recovery, and the warts fall off on their own. I found it both crazy and inspiring that there can be life on the other side of such a malady. (3/5)

Wild rabbits afflicted by the Shope Papillomavirus grow strange horn-like warts. A fall 2025 outbreak in Colorado gave us photos of rabbits with "tentacles" sprouting from their faces. (2/5)
