Mt St. Helens and Mt Adams seen from the air while flying over the Cascade Ranges in the US Pacific North West. Mt St. Helens is a stratovolcano that erupted spectacularly in 1980 after a century of dormancy. #photography #aerial #sthelens #volcano #intrepidphotos #cascademountains

This monster was chasing us down while sailing in the Bahamas, just as the sun was rising. It’s hard to describe the feeling when you see one. If one of these hits your boat, it’s total devastation. #Waterspout #Bahamas #AdventurePhotography #SailingLife #IntrepidPhotos #photography

The years thunder by, The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

Driven into the shallows and pinned there by wind, waves and sand. Offshore wave heights exceeded 14m (46ft) as record ocean conditions battered the coast. On 8 June 2007, the Pasha Bulker grounded at Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, Australia. #storm #weather #photography

On 8 June 2007, the Pasha Bulker grounded at Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, Australia. I was fortunate to be on site to capture the emergency helicopter evacuation of the ship’s 22 Filipino and Korean crew members during the storm. #storm #weather #photography

Water transforms the outback when rare floods sweep down from Central Queensland, filling channels carved over millennia. Reached after days of 4WDing across outback floodplains, this fleeting landscape exists for only weeks. From the air, its veins of water reveal a story older than memory.

This monster chased us for what felt like an eternity. We sailed away as fast as we could, running at a tangential angle to the shelf cloud to try to escape the system. The closer it got, the darker that leading edge became. #wx #photography

4/7 To pull off this shot the approach also needed to align perfectly with Mount Assiniboine during darkness, along with being in the right season for the Milky Way. This conjunction of events (before considering terrestrial weather) is unlikely to happen again in my lifetime.

3/7 As Mars is on a different orbital ellipse to earth close approaches vary. During 2018's approach Mars was a mere ~1/30th of the distance from earth compared to its furthest orbit.

2/7 Astrological alignments have a way of making us feel insignificant. During 2018, Mars was on what is called a "close approach". The next close approach where Mars will appear this large will not be until 2035.

9/20 The photos were featured at an physical exhibition called Himalayan Awakening. This kickstarted my career with "the clouds have rocks in them" becoming symbolic with the brand intrepidphotos.com that I had registered in 2001.

8/20 Ama Dablam means "Mother's necklace"; the long ridges on each side are like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier thought of as the dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods, worn by Sherpa women.

7/20 'The Clouds Have Rocks in Them' was shot on Fuju Velvia and named after the old Nepalese pilots adage that “we don't fly when there are clouds, because the clouds have rocks in them”. Taken after climbing to 5,559 metres (18,238 ft); the spire rises to 6,812m (22,349ft).

6/20 The expedition was shot on slide film. Digital cameras at the time were low quality and resolution. Early battery technology had issues with severe cold and with no recharging it was too heavy to carry batteries anyway. There was no ability to review any work in the field.

intrepid @intrepid.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
5/20 It was at the time of the Nepalese Civil War (known as the Maoist Insurgency). So we occasionally interacted with groups of isolated soldiers crossing high mountain passes adding an extra element of stress.

4/20 No power to charge appliances, no water for showering. Over the course of the expedition I lost almost 20% of my bodyweight from the altitude and exertion. Even breathing while trying to sleep feels like exercise at these altitudes.

3/20 The expedition team consisted just of my wife (to be) and two Sherpas. We spent a month over 3000m (1000ft) altitude and a week sleeping over 5000m (16,400ft). At 5000m you have only half the oxygen compared to sea level; this makes even the simplest things difficult.
