Now I am thrilled to announce the publication of the first piece of a long-term study on developmental flexibility of energy saving strategies, namely torpor & huddling, in a small fat storing hibernator. This work happened during my time as senior researcher in Vienna. www.cell.com/iscience/ful...

It is -20°C this morning. The lake is locking up, but not thick enough to walk on yet.
Looking out over frozen lake, the orange ball of the sun is just clearing the low clouds that skirt the horizon. The ice is purple blue with very little to mar the surface except for a few small ridges that are starting to form.

Hans-Otto Pörtner is a comparative physiologist who served as one of the IPCC co-chairs overseeing the sixth assessment cycle between 2015 and 2023. This included overcoming the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prof. Pörtner is a prolific author in JEB and was a plenary speaker at the Biologists @ 100 conference.
