Best tip I ever saw for getting crispy roasted potatoes is to put the baking sheet in the oven while the oven is preheating. Then you put (sweet) potato pieces that have been tossed with a little oil on the hot pan. They should sizzle. Stir once about halfway through cooking time.

It’s apparently hat month over here. 1) Callisto hat, this month’s hat from Kelbourne’s Year of DK Hats. 2) Poop on Fascists. Yarn is Berroco Lanas Light. 3) Melt the ICE hat, knit in some deep stash sport weight Classic Elite. I think I need to make the next few deeper. @rosewood_yarn_shop

Ribbed band at the bottom is alternating red and cream. Above that is a band of cream with small brown poops. Then a wide purple band with cream designs. There are birds and text reading Poop on Fascists. Working up the hat there are several more bands, cream with brown poops and red with cream plus signs, alternating toward the cream top of the hat.

Knitters! You can make a pin version of the Melt the ICE Hat in a fraction of the time. Use Fingering weight, size US4 needles and CO 36. Rib for about 1 1/2”, then place markers every 9. Continue as pattern specifies, but move decreases 1 stitch closer to markers. 🧶 Leading Men in Red Handed

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits is #GarterStitch. I’m not a huge fan of garter stitch, but a comment from another user reminded me that Emotional Support Chickens count. I made a whole flock of them (and Junior ones) for Christmas presents. ESCs made from chunky yarn fit in pet carriers.

This is easy when using charting software like Stitchmastery - it generates written instructions from the chart. They need some formatting, but it can be less bothersome than doing it all manually. And please have both instructions tested. I’ve helped people when there’s an error in one- confusing!

Tonight’s #laserdisc Hatari! (1962) Awful. Just awful. It starts fairly seriously, following a team catching animals for zoos. It becomes near slapstick at the end. 140+ minutes that could have been cut to 90. Best part: it’s the origin of Baby Elephant Walk by Mancini.

Seen on Reddit this morning as a reply to a post about wearing costumes to #protests. The tile armor seems dangerous to me (shards cause as much damage as ammo), but some of the other suggestions are worth a second look. #FuckICE #ICEOutForGood

It would be a shame if the protesters began making their signs out of quarter-inch-thick plywood to stop rubber bullets, forming a tight shield wall to prevent police from singling out and mobbing individual protesters. It would be a shame if the people behind the shield wall held up umbrellas so that tear gas canisters fired over their heads on the front line will be bounced away. It would be a shame if protesters began constructing improvised armor vests out of duct tape, hard-backed books, and ceramic tiles.

It would be a shame if protesters started wearing safety glasses, hard hats, respirators, and gardening gloves, all of which can be found at the same hardware stores as the plywood. It would be a shame if they started using traffic cones (the kind without the hole in the top), upside down buckets, or other improvised lids to contain teargas by placing them over the canisters.

It would be a shame if protesters learned that police scanners are legal to own in the US, allowing them to learn where police are moving, and what routes they intend to take. It would be a shame if they discovered that these scanners can be used to send as well as receive, allowing them to flood the scanner frequencies with noise.

All of this would be a terrible, terrible shame.

Finally finished my 2025 Mystery Knitalong afghan. Pattern from Berroco Yarn 🧶 Berroco Vintage My tension for stranded colorwork worked flat is complete garbage, so the sheep square was worked with duplicate stitch. My night sweats/hot flashes mean this will be barely used. #Blanket #MysteryKAL

Knitted afghan made of 20 squares, in cream, beige, navy blue, green and dark sage green. Every square is different, though six of them are the same pattern with different colors.
