So that's (part of) why objects exist! LW crosspost: lesswrong.com/posts/pLapRT... Next I will cover spatial chaos and the interpretation of quantum mechanics!

Temperature gradients and directed work are themselves due to burning fuel like wood, due to sunlight, due to the sun's density, ultimately due to gravitational collapse of the simple initial conditions.

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
How are objects created? High temperatures and applications of large amounts of work(applied force) can move systems between local minima. They then become stable in less extreme conditions.
100
interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
This is what gives objects their stability. To oversimplify a bit we can identify objects with particular local minima(basins really); the diversity of objects reflects the richness of this landscape.

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
What does this have to do with objects? Due to the above, objects will sit at a local maximum of system+environment entropy, or in units of energy, a local minimum of "free energy". Small perturbations from the minimum will be pushed back by the dynamics.
100
interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Local subsystems tend to configurations that maximize the total entropy of themselves and the environment. This is mostly determined by exchange of conserved quantities such as energy. Energy increases accessible state-space, so subsystems "want" to give away energy.

Unlike GoL our, universe preserves volumes in phase-space. This is important because it give the universe an inherent *directionality* under abstraction: chaotic dynamics tend to move towards regions of larger entropy(= logarithm of state-space volume)

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The Game of Life doesn't have objects in this sense! Why? Because GoL patterns are not robust to small perturbations; if they encounter any other pattern they will most likely be destroyed.

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
In particular I focus on the richness and stability of *objects*. e.g. tables, rocks, boats. Objects in our world are richly varied, move around and interact, and are robust to small nudges.

Do you still have the audio?

I mean I can see the argument "there's no way we're going to coordinate well enough to pause, so it's a waste of time" but it seems to me that a sane civilization would absolutely be pausing right now

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
why not?

interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
I think people holding such a view(that is, doom has substantial probability but is not certain, regardless of whether they support a pause) have had better predictions of the way things are going down than any other group basically
120
interstice.bsky.social @interstice.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
So what would you say to those who hold a "moderate" doomer position that there is a lot of uncertainty but doom is certainly a live possibility and this on its own is reason to substantially slow down

The stunlocking was made all the more infuriating by the characters' repetitive screams of "EYAAAA" and "EH??" accompanying the egg-rolls

3d platforms where you run around rolling eggs over fruit until they hatch into monsters that do your bidding. Fun local multiplayer where you could mercilessly stunlock people with repeated egg-rolling

Seems like twitter might actually be dying on a technical level. on the one hand it's sad, on the other the gradual failure of the antiwoke hostile takeover to maintain a prima facie not very complicated site is kind of abstractly interesting.

This and adjacent attitudes seem common among rats. Familiarity with deception and zero sum games might've been useful back when many of them got convinced to work for openai and anthropic

Ideal rational agents would only use unsubsidized PMs to hedge. In practice PMs are about exploiting peoples' psychological flaws and produce good forecasts as an externality.

Semi-relatedly I tried learning ancient Greek a while back and was struck by how many different (and short) words they had for "therefore", logical implication. (disclaimer I am not an expert, this may not even be true) Perhaps related to their propensity for philosophy
