Recently pulled together an emergency preparedness pod with people who live near me because of the many (worsening) crises that we are in or are heading our way. Can't stress enough for others to do this asap. Even just having a couple of conversations about it is better than nothing and will help.

Many activists & organizers use the Signal app instead of regular SMS texting for increased privacy 🧵 Swipe for practical steps to: • limit records • lock your device • protect your identity • verify contacts • avoid scams Save & share with people who use #Signal! #DigiSec #SecurityCulture #OpSec
REMEMBER Signal is safer, not safe scroll for safety tips
COMMUNICATE SAFELY Signal is not permission to say anything. Keep communications in large or not-fully-vetted Signal chats to a bare minimum. Don’t write anything you wouldn’t want authorities to read, or to be read aloud in court. If someone’s phone is taken or accessed, your messages to them may be visible. Anything can be screenshotted! Whether readable for one day or one minute, it can still be screenshotted.
VERIFY PEOPLE & DEVICES Double-check that you are talking to the person you think you are through a trusted second channel, such as an in-person conversation, video call, or a question only the two of you know the answer to. Use Signal’s safety-number verification. Compare the safety numbers or scan the QR code in person when possible; if they do not match, stop using that channel until you can verify the person. Remove people from chats if they—or any of their devices—become compromised, lost, seized, or accessed by someone else.
MANAGE DATA Set disappearing messages for every chat you create or join to 1 week, 1 day, or shorter. Set a default disappearing-message timer for all new chats: Signal Settings → Privacy → Default timer for new chats. Delete Signal on your phone before traveling internationally. Delete Signal Desktop when you no longer need it, especially before giving away, sharing, repairing, or disposing of a computer. Be careful what you store in chat group descriptions—files, links, photos stored there are visible to everyone with a link to the chat.
