Emergency calls over 4G not supported for foreigners by many telcos. See Sweden, where all operators except Telia shutdown 2G/3G or Australia where Vodafone doesn't support 4G emergency calls. When you travel there and are in trouble, change mobile network or shout www.gsma.com/get-involved...

SMS termination rates in the Netherlands lowered to €0.003/sms. KPN demanded an originating fee and now has to deal with a much lower fee for CPaaS providers www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
25 years ago I thought termination fees would soon be gone. Well they are still alive! The Dutch regulator has just set a new fee at the EU roaming SMS termination rate, which is much lower than the commercial rate Dutch operators charge

Weird foreign broadband policy person (me) also asked questions. I am not convinced the data is good enough or says what they think it does. Fixed broadband would be a more likely culprit if at all. Didn't go down well with the economists. www.linkedin.com/posts/caitli...

The UK saw a decrease in fertility around the same time, but France was stable and Germany saw growth. All three had an iPhone monopoly

You don't really have spatially granulated wireless broadband data ;-) You have NTIA data from one time point 2011, which is very low quality. You don't correlate it with fixed broadband data from the same or other datasets even when most use is over wifi. (me in 2011) www.oecd.org/content/dam/...

Any particular reason why this only happened in the USA? Or why fixed broadband deployment isn't controlled for? Or why iPhones didn't prevent black pregnancies? bsky.app/profile/inte...

Rudolf van der Berg @internetthought.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
However, the availability of iphones/smartphones/broadband doesn't appear to say much about how fertility rates develop in other OECD countries. France has better and cheaper fixed and mobile broadband than USA, Canada or Germany data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP...

That is human nature for you. Nobody ever thinks of the guy who installs the plumbing or the Italian people responsible for the pipes in this temporary sewer built at the end of my road in Almere. It is what Terry Pratchett wrote much of his work about ... Human nature, not humane nature

Is it important to you to talk to a real life therapist about your anxiety over AI? ;-)
ELIZA is an early natural language processing computer program developed from 1964 to 1967[1] at MIT by Joseph Weizenbaum.[2][3][page needed] Created to explore communication between humans and machines, ELIZA simulated conversation by using a pattern matching and substitution methodology that gave users an illusion of understanding on the part of the program, but gave no response that could be considered really understanding what was being said by either party.

When I ask why there are so many women from Malaga on Tinder with the same story of just having been in Amsterdam, but returning shortly, the "connection" is broken. My idea of why Malaga and not Madrid. Malaga sounds close enough, exotic enough, but still requires a real trip to go there

AI gets almost everything wrong about this picture I took in Wicklow Street Dublin yesterday, looking west. The antenna is in Dublin, but not a RTE TV tower. Two Rock Mountain is 15km south and doesn't have a transmitter, that is Three Rock Mountain 1.5km further. Other answers weren't better.

The 1984 RULES OF NETNEWS DEBATING by Rich Rosen support the positions taken by the various authors in this thread. All rules conveniently numbered #1, for being most important www.neurozen.com/waarr/RulesO...

En in lijn met je historische overzicht en de andere discussies van vandaag, hier de THE RULES OF NETNEWS DEBATING van Rich Rosen uit 1984! www.neurozen.com/waarr/RulesO...
Since it looks like this year, we will witness an autumn the likes of which
we haven't seen since late 1983, with thousands or even hundreds of new net
users emanating form the halls of academia (to the shores of New Jersey),
it seems like an appropriate time to submit this article on THE RULES OF
NETNEWS DEBATING. I hope you all find it useful. You're welcome in advance.

RULE #1
-------
Any attempt to say that someone's personal beliefs are wrong, even if
you supply evidence to support your claim, is an outright attack. If you show
people a flaw in their logic, they have every right to punch you in the face.

RULE #1
-------
A request for rational discussion usually means that the people making the
request are telling you that they are willing to discuss things rationally
only if you agree with them; anything less would not be rational discussion.

RULE #1
-------
Always assume that whenever you see someone making a statement about "certain
people", "those who shall remain nameless", "assholes", etc., they are talking
about *you*. It is also O.K. to assume that words you don't understand,
like "prestidigitatory", "lapidarian", "energumen", and "buprestid", are also
direct personal attacks aimed at you and/or your loved ones, meriting an
equally vacuous scathing attack in response. Failure to do so results in
many lost opportunities for rational discussion.

Gluten allergy was described in the second century AD already. It took until the Dutch Famine of WW2 to find the cause. This meme about people eating bread for 5000 years fails to include 80 years of science on coeliac disease! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coeliac...
Disinformation about coeliac disease and how that is supposed to be new. Coeliac disease was described in the 2nd century AD already! But the cause only known during the Dutch great famine of the second world war

Zie finaeon.com/the-nazis-an...

What's frightening in these graphs is that the red line moves up and to the right in all cases, whereas the blue one remains much more stable. The Republican judges vote is political and not the result of the quality of the law (text, substance), when the law was written or the case itself.
