A hook, a line, and one very lucky little grebe. This young Pied-billed Grebe arrived with fishing line and a hook lodged inside its digestive tract, a life-threatening injury for such a small bird. Our team removed both without surgery, giving this resilient patient a second chance to heal.

“Not having the energy to grow new feathers is kind of like not having enough money to buy a new wetsuit and having to use a ratty old one with lots of holes in a cold ocean,” said Dr. Rebecca Duerr, Senior Director of Research and Veterinary Science.

Seabirds rely on healthy feathers to stay warm, waterproof, buoyant, and able to swim and fly. But when food is scarce, they may not have enough energy to replace worn feathers during their annual molt, and if not replaced on time, they can have problems surviving.

Even the friendliest dogs can disturb nesting and resting birds. Keep pets leashed where wildlife is present. Thanks for following our Beach Behavior series - which tip will you share with a friend before your next beach visit?
A dog runs across a sandy beach toward a flock of shorebirds and seabirds, causing many of the birds to take flight. Text on the image reads: "5. Be mindful of pets. The presence of predators such as dogs can prevent or disrupt the nesting of shorebirds on the beaches. Choose designated dog-friendly beaches whenever possible."

Some of the smallest beach visitors are the easiest to overlook.
A small shorebird rests in a shallow depression in the sand, blending in with its surroundings. Text on the image reads: "4. Pay attention to what is around you. Small and vulnerable shorebirds such as Snowy Plovers can be easily overlooked as they blend in with their environment and nest in small depressions in the sand."

Wildlife is healthiest when it finds its own food.
A close-up of a gull reaching toward food in a person's outstretched hand against a light sky. Text on the image reads: "3. Never feed wildlife. Feeding birds can lead to habituation, which may cause them to seek food in unsafe locations such as fishing piers. Human food can also be quite harmful to wildlife."

A bird that doesn't fly away may need help, not a closer look. Call the experts if you come across a bird in distress.
A cormorant sits on rocks along the shoreline with fishing line tangled around its beak. Text on the image reads: "2. Learn to recognize distress. If a wild animal doesn't run away, that does not mean it's friendly. It may very well be in distress. Don't touch it or take a selfie. Instead, call your local wildlife rehabilitator for help."

A great beach day starts with sharing the shore. Keep your distance so wildlife can go about their day undisturbed.
A group of seabirds stands on a sandy beach in the foreground while a person crouches several feet away in the background, intentionally out of focus. Text on the image reads: "1. Give wildlife space. Always keep at least six feet distance between yourself and a wild animal." The image illustrates maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife at the beach.
