The NICEC Journal has launched a Call for Papers for a special Autumn 2027 collection (Issue 59): Critical Perspectives on Careers from Early-Career Researchers. Find full details, submission guidance, and the proposal form here: nicecjournal.co.uk/index.php/nc...
This special issue will feature a special collection of research papers focusing on critical contributions from early-career researchers, guest-edited by young researchers André Borges, Oscar Gomez, Hanna Lonka, Taísa Oliveira, and Reihaneh Rahmatjou.

This upcoming issue encourages early-career researchers to publish their work on critical perspectives in career and career guidance research. Building on the COCAG Action (i.e., Critical Perspectives on Career and Career Guidance), critical research refers to contributions identifying, understanding, or challenging career theories, policies, and practices that create or maintain unfair power structures, inequalities, or social injustice.

Who can apply

The first author of each contribution should be an early-career researcher, which refers to a researcher who is currently completing master's-level or doctoral studies, or has recently completed these studies (i.e., less than five years).

Submission instructions

The editors welcome a broad range of submissions and are particularly interested in those that attempt to answer one or several of the questions proposed by the COCAG Action, which are:

How can the challenges and changes that are happening to careers in the contemporary world are being lived and understood?
How can policymakers respond to contemporary challenges to individuals’ careers, and what should a socially just perspective look like?
How can career guidance practice adopt a more responsive and critical stance to address the changing world?

At the Cutting Edge October 2026 Thriving not just surviving - fulfilment across the whole lifespan based on latest research and insights @thecdi.bsky.social www.nicec.org/articles/at-...
Philosophers have long asserted that fulfilment is something more than happiness or satisfaction and now vocational psychologists seem to agree. Whilst the empirical research into fulfilment (work and life) is still relatively new, there are fascinating and important insights emerging for individuals and the practitioners who work with them.

Several theorists assert that fulfilment is an ‘important and worthwhile aspiration for most people’, but there is also evidence that sustaining fulfilment may not be easy or equally available to all. What factors make the biggest difference? Does fulfilment shift through the lifespan? What tools and frameworks can you use to help yourself and others become more fulfilled?

In this session, we will share the very latest insights from doctoral research into fulfilment, work fulfilment and fulfilment through the lifespan. Specifically:

What fulfilment means – generally and through the lifespan
Why it matters to individuals, teams and organizations
Factors that predict the possibility of fulfilment
What can make work a fulfilling experience – six key themes
How fulfilment evolves beyond midlife (an area often underrepresented in career and lifespan research)
Practical implications will be discussed, including how practitioners can better support individuals navigating identity, purpose, and thriving across longer working lives.

At our next @instcareer.bsky.social & @thecdi.bsky.social "At the Cutting-Edge" event, we'll explore the latest research into fulfilment across the lifespan and consider the practical implications for professionals. Join us on 8 October: www.nicec.org/events/nicec...
This session will focus on the important and worthwhile aspiration of fulfilment in the career space and beyond and will explore what it means not just to survive but to thrive throughout the lifespan, in both professional and personal domains.

Whilst fulfilment is seen as a desired outcome, there is evidence that it may not be easy or equally available to all.

This ‘At the Cutting-Edge session’ will set the scene by sharing some contemporary research on the topic, in particular identifying what factors make the biggest difference and pinpointing the six consistent and shared themes which have led to a new psychometric tool – the Work Fulfilment Scale.
ulfilment narratives can naturally shift in later life when achievement and work are no longer the primary organising structures of identity and meaning and, drawing on lifespan psychology and adjustment research, the session will also explore meaning for the age group, 60–80, which represents a psychologically distinct and under-theorised developmental stage within current career and lifespan discourse.

This session will share key findings from doctoral research blended with fascinating insights from the wider Psychology community. Participants will be invited to join the conversation, reflect on practical implications, and to take away a brand-new model to boost their professional practice.

The video and slides from our May 2026 Seminar Event: "Reflections on Careers - What have we learned from working on careers and career development?" are now available to all. 💻 You can find them on our event page: www.nicec.org/events/nicec... 💻
During 2025, 39 NICEC Fellows working in the UK were interviewed by Wendy Hirsh about what they have learned from their work on careers and supporting the career development of individuals. This project was born out of personal curiosity and Wendy felt free to conduct the work as she felt best with the proviso that participants and their data were treated ethically and with care and respect.

In this seminar, Wendy Hirsh, shared some of the themes emerging from these rich conversations with NICEC Fellows. While summarising key findings across identified themes, the seminar highlighted the vibrancy of the research by using verbatim quotes from a range of Fellows, who generously gave permission for their words to be used. Some Fellows kindly voiced their own words during the seminar.

We were delighted to gather online yesterday for the 2026 Bill Law Award! A massive congratulations to all seven of our fantastic finalists, who did a brilliant job condensing their research into engaging three-minute snapshots. www.nicec.org/articles/the...
A warm night in July 2026 saw the NICEC community come together to celebrate the finalists and winner of the annual Bill Law Award. Held in honour of NICEC Founding Fellow Dr Bill Law, the evening celebrated emerging talent and research that bridges the gap between theory and practice.

The event was hosted by Laura Walker, with opening words from NICEC Chair Pete Robertson and a keynote presentation from Dr Emma Bolger who passionately advocated for the value of careers practitioner led research. It was then onto the highlight of the evening; the rapid-fire presentation session, where our seven finalists took on the challenge of condensing their original research into a strict three-minute snapshot.

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to all of this year's exceptional finalists

A reminder that Issue 56 of the NICEC Journal was published last month and is open access to all. This themed edition explored how ethics, philosophies and principles (EPPs) impact policy and practice in career development work. Take a look 👀: nicecjournal.co.uk/index.php/nc...
This latest edition reflects on a foundational yet complex theme: Ethics, Philosophies, and Principles (EPPs). In this issue, our contributors explore how these core elements underpin everything we do—from the high-level design of policy to the day-to-day nuances of individual practice.

As our editor, Jane Artess, reflects in her opening editorial, the world of work is in a state of constant flux. The ethical "gold standards" we may have trained with are frequently challenged by the realities of the modern world.

Whether it is navigating the "Copilot era" of AI, addressing the climate crisis through impartial guidance, or acting as advocates for social justice, the principles we hold are not static.

The video and slides from our January 2026 Seminar: "Social class - a ramp and a barrier to career aspirations, decision making & pathways" are now available to all. 💻 You can find them on our event page: www.nicec.org/events/nicec... 💻
Social class often remains overlooked in discussions and interventions aimed at improving diversity, equality and inclusion. Despite shaping lives and opportunities in profound ways, social class remains hard to define, measure and discuss for both individuals and organisations. We know that social class shapes individual’s career decisions and outcomes in several ways, whether through influencing ideas around what is possible or desirable, shaping access to social and cultural capital that make some careers easier to pursue than others, or setting hard financial limits on available career pathways. Career services have a key role to play in levelling this playing field and providing equal access to career knowledge, opportunities and aspirations regardless of background.

📢 Final call for entries! 📢 Just over a week to go to submit your entry to the 2026 Bill Law Memorial Student Award. How to enter: You do not need to submit a full paper yet—just a 250-word abstract outlining your research or practice. Read the full criteria: www.nicec.org/pages/bill-l...
The Bill Law Memorial Award is for any student who has completed an academic programme within the last 12 months that involved a piece of research or innovative practice related to career development. This could include anyone studying for a level 6 level in career development (including career leaders), a PGDip/Masters/SCQF 11, a PhD or a CIPD programme.

You do not need to be a member of NICEC.

What we look for
The submission should present original research or innovative practice in a career related topic.

Where the submission relates to innovative practice, this needs to include some element of evaluation, including feedback, comments or assessments from participants. Innovative practice could include using new techniques or using existing techniques in a new way or with a new client group. This could also include expanding the boundaries of current practice. Original research can include quantitative or qualitative empirical research.

The judges are NICEC Fellows and the articles will be judged on the following criteria:

Consideration of a contemporary theme within the career development field.
Demonstrates original empirical research or innovative practice.
Discussion of relevant literature.
Evidence of critical evaluation and analysis.
Commentary on any implications for professional practice, policy or research.

How do we balance the need for specialised knowledge with the demand for generic skills? What does "reflective practice" look like in a world increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence? These are just some of the questions we will be tackling at our next NICEC Network Meeting.

The session focuses on the evolving landscape of initial and continuing professional development (CPD) for careers practitioners. As the field faces new policy pressures and technological shifts, we will explore the tensions and opportunities within current training pathways and discuss the relative weight given to working with individuals versus influencing the wider systems around them.

⏳ Coming up next Tuesday: A critical look at Social Class and Careers ⏳ Is social class a ramp to opportunity or a barrier to entry? www.nicec.org/events/nicec...
Social class often remains overlooked in discussions and interventions aimed at improving diversity, equality and inclusion. Despite shaping lives and opportunities in profound ways social class remains hard to define, measure and discuss for both individuals and organisations.

In this NICEC workshop researchers from the Institute for Employment Studies Dr Kyla Ellis and Kate Alexander will share findings from research exploring the role of social class in career decision making, using the construction sector as a case study. Drawing on a review of the literature and qualitative interviews with expert stakeholders, and new and prospective construction workers they will present findings on how social class can act as a ‘ramp or barrier’ to certain careers, and how career services and employers can support people from a variety of backgrounds to find and enter fulfilling careers. The workshop will be interactive, giving practitioners the opportunity to reflect on the research and share their own knowledge and experience of social class and career advice and guidance.

The National Research Conference for Careers Practitioners is an annual event, brought to you in partnership by the CDI, iCeGS, AGCAS and NICEC.

Theme for 2026: Sharing and showcasing practitioner research

The upcoming National Research Conference for Careers Practitioners will focus on supporting careers practitioners in all settings to share their research, showcasing a range of excellent work across the whole careers sector. We’ll also be considering how practitioners can engage effectively with research and the importance of evidence-informed careers practice. As ever, we will have a range of expert keynotes, panel speakers and diverse parallel sessions for attendees, and a research poster fair open to all careers practitioners.

For the first time, the conference is completely free for all those working in careers and employability, or with an interest in this area.

Social class - a ramp and a barrier to career aspirations, decision making and pathways
Tuesday 20th January 5pm

Social class often remains overlooked in discussions and interventions aimed at improving diversity, equality and inclusion. Despite shaping lives and opportunities in profound ways social class remains hard to define, measure and discuss for both individuals and organisations.

NICEC Journal Issue 55 Launches Essential Collection on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion As a free, open-access publication, the full text of Issue 55 is available immediately www.nicecjournal.co.uk/index.php/nc
This issue could not be more relevant or timely, arriving amid global events—such as the rolling back of progressive programmes in the US—that directly impact hard-fought freedoms and equity. We adopt the expanded framing of JEDI to foreground the structural and systemic dimensions of inequality that traditional EDI approaches often miss. This collection insists that to speak of careers without confronting power is to risk reinforcing the very inequities we seek to challenge. Issue 55 establishes career development as an inherently political practice concerned with human flourishing and collective wellbeing.
