Partway through reading Liz Pelly’s “Mood Machine,” I am surprised to learn that what was originally Muzak rebranded in 2011 to Mood Media™️, which now markets artificial scents to places like restaurants and banks. Elevator jazz for the olfactory 👃🏼

By the end of the eighties, Muzak was being heard by over 80 million people in nineteen countries every day, and the company survived, somehow, until 2011, when it was rebranded into Mood Media. To this day it handles music playlists, in-store signage, and even scent marketing for a wide range of global corporations spanning Burger Kings, 7-Eleven stores, and Capital One banks. In 2021, it was acquired by the San Francisco-based Vector Capital Management, which describes itself as a “global private equity and credit investment firm focused on transformative investments in technology and technology-enabled businesses.” It seems there couldn’t be a more appropriate place for capital-M Muzak to go to die, but it was a foreboding tale for the tech-enabled lowercase-m muszak that would pervade culture in the years to come.

Young man came to my office in the university. I asked, “What class are you in?” He said he wasn’t in any class. He studied whatver he wanted to without being enrolled. That way he’d gone to several universities, leaving each when there was no further class he found useful to attend. He said, “I’m about to graduate from this place.”
