We now have *limited* dental care for all. Doesn't cover orthodontics, a lot of pretty standard services require preapproval (from a private insurance company), etc. And the biggest driver of medical expenses is that we don't have pharmacare, and residential elder care is extremely expensive.

It's a bit of hyperbole, but when you're a two-term governor who gets cratered in a primary by a no-account failson with a Totenkopf tattoo, you've demonstrated yourself to be well below replacement level as a candidate.

Advocated the pull-out method of family planning, and they mistook that as a desire to make the Autonomous Region entirely too autonomous.

I cannot help but include a lengthy "I realize that what I'm about to say sounds completely insane, but I promise there is ample documentary evidence and I can supply citations as needed" proviso nowadays before I discuss any current event with anyone who is not terminally online.

When your whole worldview is that only white, straight Christians can be True Americans, Muslim (and queer, and drunk non-white UoT students) people who live boring, normal, wholly American lives are far more threatening than bomb-throwing radicals.

"My biggest issue is the potholes". "Absolutely! And our candidate strongly believes that we need to prioritize maintenance". "No, I'm pretty sure my neighbour Doug is going out at night and digging them. I want 24/7 police surveillance on the block to catch him." "I...uh...we'll get back to you."

I really hate how base selfishness and oppositional defiance have been recast as virtues. Framing the choice to run a no-money, no-hope wrecker campaign against all advice as bravery is just anti-bedtime nonsense.

It's extremely likely that Bolsonaro's kid, Fujimori's kid, and Ferdinand Marcos' kid will all be elected heads of state at the same time, so if anyone thinks that American politics are uniquely bad, I'm afraid that the truth is way more depressing.

And as I can tell, the only Democratic governor after McAuliffe to carry out an execution is Katie Hobbs...who voted to end the death penalty as a legislator, and instituted a moratorium on executions as governor, only for the court to threaten her with contempt for defying an execution order.

And the last DSA-aligned mayor of New York lost his reelection campaign because he tried to institute civilian oversight of police misconduct investigations, and the NYPD rioted and stormed City Hall.

One of the reasons I'm not terribly concerned about cowardly Democratic leadership after 2026 is that a power struggle between people on one side whose primary instinct is to hide under the sofa, and a ball of white-hot rage on the other, is only likely to go one way.

If the Democrats take the Senate, he's going to spend the next two years shivving Trump appointees in the kidneys in televised hearings, and if he isn't a top-tier 2028 candidate now, he will be when those clips make the rounds.

Insane as it is, I'd much rather Trump spend his final years Turkmenbashi-maxxing rather than maximizing the destructive power of his office. Want to spend the last month before midterms fixated on a campaign to rename sausages to Trump Tubes? Brilliant plan sir, don't let yourself get distracted.

A system where one group has unequal claim to membership in a polity is almost invariably a system in which that group has molded a belief system that justifies their position. And historically, the easiest means to justify that is by the assertion that your group is inherently superior to theirs.
010
Insipid Twaddle @insipidtwaddle.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Ethnonationalism is fundamentally the belief that a given people are superior and free to assert that superiority over others. Workable idea if you're a hegemon, falls apart if others can apply enough economic or military power to bring you to your knees, and that is very much the case with Israel.

Yeah, the nexus of much cultic behaviour is i) there is a world-threatening problem and ii) only our insular group can solve it, so iii) if you aren't willing to have sex with Dear Leader, you are dooming the world. Maps well on to messiahs, revcoms, and Silicon Valley Harry Potter enthusiasts.

Some elements of revolutionary communism are well-suited to be coopted by bad actors as a vehicle for sex (and occasionally murder!) cults. Take an ethos based on relentless self-criticism, struggle sessions and sacrifice for the cause, throw in an authoritarian leader, and it gets culty quickly.

The Maoist Communist Union hates anyone even tangentially related to electoral politics. It's kinda their thing. Well, that and being a sex cult. That's their other thing.

Their theory of the American electorate seems to be that the median American voter spends all day on Truth Social waiting on new edits of missile strikes set to bad metal music, and Trump's poll numbers are cratering because they haven't provided enough new material in recent weeks.

Having been in exactly the same boat, that sucks so much and I'm sorry. Might be an avenue already explored, but pregabalin has made an enormous difference for me where other pharma did not. Mention only because it's off-label in the US and Canada, though commonly prescribed in Europe.

I effectively ditched the entirely of the (male portion) of the friend group I was in from ages 12 through 21ish. Price I paid is that I just stopped being around and most of them never knew why, because the girl he had pressured into sex had asked myself/my girlfriend not to say anything.

I can't blame anyone but myself; I was going to get the vaccines, but decided it was smart to be shoulder to shoulder with 1000 other people in an airless room first. Have passed the worst of it, now I just have several days where I sound like the 3am guy on a smooth jazz radio station.

Still beats the alternative. I suspect I'm in the process of acquiring influenza immunity the old-fashioned way, and beyond some really interesting glances into my subconscious based on what it has served up as fever dreams the past couple days, I don't rate the experience highly.

Yeah, I love the 1MDB scandal so much. The fact that celebrities who are already wealthy enough that money is an abstraction will still just be your friend if you cut big enough cheques is wild. Like the secret menu on Cameo or something.

You're overcomplicating this. You went into anti-air because you like it when planes blow up. And now there's a plane. Don't you want it to blow up? Hell yeah you do. If you guess right, you're getting a medal; if you guess wrong, pobody's nerfect. Live a little, press the button (repeatedly).

Just have a guy scan the horizon for planes, and when you see one, fire at it. Works for the Kuwaitis: no one has shot down more F-15s this war than they have.

There's also a pretty strong anti case embedded: if there isn't an Israeli bluff to call on weapons to cause sanity to prevail in their domestic politics, it's time to start looking past that toward a complete arms embargo *and* whole-economy trade restraints rather than just targeting settlers.

Was scanned both inbound and outbound at their Louisville hub, so it's less likely that it just got destroyed or something. It's likely caught in the bottleneck that facility has been experiencing because another facility is offline: their network bottlenecks easily. postalpro.usps.com/node/15567

Having worked for more than a decade at a company that did mail-order shipping (and being the person who generally ended up trying to resolve it): is the last scan on the 13th, or is it looping, with multiple outbound scans followed by it appearing at the same Louisville hub?
