I think it's just because they're not very good directors. Which, of course, is not the same thing as having never directed good movies. They're basically the Matthew Broderick of directing, numerous other people would probably have done a better job given their role, in hindsight.

I think what also exacerbates the problem is that it's such a given to apply real world (western, almost always) religious ideas to a story that don't innately include them. There is no heaven in Star Wars as far as we know.
