It’s not I don’t think, it’s all going to be above dew point. So the Cosy Cooler is a heat pump that will increase the flow temp of the return to say 20-30c and the outdoor unit will cool it back to ~18c.

Indeed, in the longer term they absolutely should be cut. But this should be well telegraphed and tapered down to signal to industry you’ve got time to get your house in order, but not forever. Like ~7 years or something to hit zero grant from the 7.5k now.

I also don’t see it, when the product, can literally reduce network effects of the service itself, if you do a little work with it. It eats its own lunch in that regard. Little moat, practically zero switching costs.

I think you got the wrong end of the stick. They aren’t going below 18c in the rad circuit. The cosy cooler will increase the flow temperature say to 20-30c, the outdoor unit will cool it back to ~18c, I.e. above dew point.

right (read, at all) and was probably just guessed by the installers. Which is a real shame for everyone.

Well somethings not right, as it’s kinda simple. The heat demand is what it is, however large or small, you make sure the heat source is large enough to cover it on the peak day, you size the radiators to emit that heat in the rooms at the designed flow temperature. So it probably wasn’t designed

New rads, probably, to operate <=55c on the coldest day of the year. Pipes, probably not, can be worked around by a competent heating engineer - usually a buffer and meaty pump to overcome resistance to flow in the pipework.

Means that the heat pump was undersized/the radiators were undersized or it was run like a boiler - a bit in the morning and evening, rather than letting it do its thing and run all day.

You don’t need anything ripping out. Any proper heating engineer worth their salt could calculate what’s required, usually a buffer with a meaty pump to overcome resistance in microbore. But again, that’s just the lack of understanding that’s prevalent.

It’s honestly insane when you’ve got a battery and a heat pump on an EV tariff. Payback can be wild if the heat pump install is nothing crazy.

Absolutely agree, I moved for the savings but even if that disappeared, I wouldn’t move back as they’re just better cars. Quicker, quieter, more internal room and my favourite of remotely running the aircon so you get in a cool car when it’s roasting outside.

Also, that’s a common misconception. The heat pump is sized for whatever the heat loss is to keep it toasty. The radiators are also sized for the room requirements, whatever they are and the design flow temp. You just need to beat the p/kWh of useful heat.

Umm, the £9k grant for the heat pump on oil properties goes back to £7.5k in march i believe…

To get a design flow temperature that gives a SCOP that beats the spark gap, without changing *any* fabric. Of course, if it’s easy to upgrade the insulation (loft, CWI etc) absolutely it’s a no brainer as your reducing the total amount of heat needed - but it might not change the p/kWh of heat.

Sean W @insan3gl0ss.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The heat loss is indeed related the fabric including insulation. But if you’re *already* heating the property anyway, via gas or whatever, then if you can just ensure the p/kWh of useful heat is cheaper then you’re winning. And you can do that by just increasing the emitter sizing if you want

4-5 years, probably not. I’m currently on track for about 6-8 years full payback, depending on how prices go.

In isolation, it’s not easy. It’s when combined with PV & batteries, it’s mad not to. I feed my heat pump 7.6p/kWh electricity to get nearly 5kWh of heat, turning my old gas bill of ~£1k/y into ~£250/y.

Yes, but I think we should just simplify it all and make all pay it in the same way rather than have different categories and grandfathering of tax rates. We can adjust fuel duty to account for it so it’s neutral at a national level. But that’s just me 😊

Sean W @insan3gl0ss.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Oh for sure, but I think should be step 2 once things have settled with PPM.

Sean W @insan3gl0ss.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I would just make all cars PPM(and the per mile cost related to kerb weight), reduce Fuel Duty a bit (proxy for emissions) and then have a runway to increase the PPM as the fleet changes. Keep all taxation of cars drivetrain agnostic, but the incentive clear.

flow temperature of the system and tariff - not insulation levels. Flow temperature is related to emitter sizing (radiators) and the heat loss of the room.

Insulation isn’t key. It’s great don’t get me wrong, but you’ve fallen into the common trap of “highly insulated homes = good for heat pumps, old homes = not good for heat pumps” which just isn’t true. What matters is the p/kWh of useful heat from a heat pump is cheaper than gas, which is related

Although he’s wrong even about that. They work in literally any building. I accept there are other constraints around flats and very dense terraces which make them difficult. But even a barn can be heated efficiently with a correctly sized heat pump and emitters.

For sure the new refrigerant allowing flow temps of 70c+ definitely help with hot water, but yes they’re definitely more refined. Also it’s mainly the industry re-learning how to do proper heating systems design again.

I get scalding hot water pretty much all day. It’s 190L heated to 58c and will do three long showers/baths plus a bit of washing up. Not only that, it’s delivered at mains pressure which is something that couldn’t be said for any previous combi boiler before I’ve had. Recommend.

This mine running midwinter (notice the ice 😂), the noise of the heat pump is right at the end of the video, the rest is background noise or my footsteps.

That’s what the upcoming Warm Homes Loan Scheme is supposed to address, the upfront cost problem, even though the total cost of ownership can be significantly better.

Back to back terraces, flats and apartments will need slightly different solutions, probably ambient heat networks. But most other homes will be fine, they do not need to be directly next to homes - they can be in gardens or wall mounted, nothing that a bit of creativity can’t solve.

Can’t comment on an Octopus Cosy, but I’ve got a Viessmann Vitocal 151 and its insanely quiet. Genuinely cannot hear it even when I’m in garden and it’s doing hot water. Have to be within 1m to actually hear it above background noise.

It cost them £12.5k post grant which is a payback of approx 8 years, which is broadly the same as what see too for mine. Might be even quicker if bills unfortunately keep rising. As for the homes, they can go in pretty much all homes, but flats and very dense housing is certainly a challenge.

Wrong end of the stick, £7.5k is the grant you get towards it. You pay anything over that figure, FYI.

As long as the p/kWh of useful heat of a heat pump is the same or less than gas/oil - then it’s the same or cheaper regardless as your heating the property anyway. All you’ve got to do is beat a SCOP of around 2.8 (at current prices) to do that, it’s actually quite hard to achieve worse than 3!

You intend to run at. That’s pretty much it. It’s true for any age /type of building - even a barn.

Can confirm insulation is good, but it exactly as important for fossil fuel heat sources as it is for heat pumps. So do not think “heat pumps only work/only efficiently etc, in highly insulated homes”. Size the heat pump for the property heat loss, and size the rads for the room heat loss &flow temp

New boiler is a lot of money too, but the running cost difference is becoming more and more stark, never mind adding solar and batteries into the mix in future. Gas is a dead duck in the long run.

You don’t need any measures like cavity wall if you don’t want. That went around 4-5 years ago, but was true. The only thing needed is to get rid of your fossil fuel heating system.

Would the triple lock be the only thing that’s big and it’s more of changing a trajectory rather than ‘cutting’ that would broadly fit this category he’s talking about? Beyond that I don’t see what he’s on about.

Interesting, though I can’t see gas plants running if the costs to run exceeds the price they can sell at. Might be a fundamental flaw somewhere…

Annoyingly, people still heat their homes with gas and it also powers a fair chunk of power. So if we want that *not* to stop very soon, we have to pay the cost of gas and we cannot set the price as we have to import a lot of it.

Argh, not more tax complexities! Can we not just accept that pensioners now have to do tax returns as when the next rise happens next year (can’t see the personal allowance going up) we’ll be back in the same boat? Cannot kick that can forever.
