It already did a while ago. These proofs are not things humans or humanity were close to doing.

That is a problem that needs to be fixed without regard to Flock.

The problem here seems to be a police officer abusing his position. Banning Flock doesn't solve that problem.

This applies to both parties. Some candidates are so appalling that you should cross party lines to vote against them

Creating a new AI regulatory agency using existing models means massively increasing Presidential power. I'm not sure we want to be doing that.

This should be fairly obvious but: the only way Palestinians will have a state is if they convince Israelis that such a state will not endanger Israel or any Israelis.

This is very true. Trump isn't that focused on consolidating authoritarian power. His Republican successor might be.

Ok. Is there someone whose job is to give the correct answers? Otherwise this devolves into a weird sort of game where the goal is to get the answers popularly thought of as correct.

This is really dangerous. But General Milley acted correctly on Jan 6, 2021.

Very true. Also, they probably would be alarmed if leaders in the opposition party proposed to break it a lot by packing the Supreme Court.

I enjoyed Inventing the Renaissance, but have to confess that I don't see the relevance to SFF. Congratulations, however.

We're very unlikely to do this. The conditions that led to this happening just no longer obtain.

Consistently, primary voters are pushing positions that the voters who decide general elections nationally are uncomfortable with.

Yes. He hasn't joined left wing Dems in calling to expand the Supreme Court.

Not really. No one knows what a" district" is in this context. (Number 13 isn't a district in any sense.)

Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
No. Both will be seen as authoritarian overreach and a baked power grab.
100 0
Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
It's not remotely a limit and the idea that it will be seen as relevant is insiders talking to each other.

Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
So of course no objections if it's done today?
110 0
Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Because of course the number of districts is set in stone and can't be increased.

If Republicans actually thought expansion was likely that is certainly one rational counter move.

That all occurred 18-24 years ago. Quite a delayed effect.

Unfortunately, true. Not because we it's impossible but because our country unfortunately seems determined to continue down this road for quite a while.

A lot of what makes a great President is the existence of an existential challenge to the US and Grant didn't face one.

Which one? Russia is already engaged in a stupid, military adventure. Iran's military is limited and China is moving on its own timeline. America just doesn't have that many adversaries, though Trump is doing his best to manage that.

(5) we've exploded our deficit; (6) damaged the rule of law;(7) normalized corruption and incompetence on an epic scale; and (8) turned law enforcement agencies into instruments of repression; anything I'm leaving out so far? (List unfortunately still in formation). 2/2.

So at the moment: (1) we're in a perpetual war with Iran without clear goals or strategy;(2) we've launched a trade war against our closest ally and a major economic partner; (3) we've weakened our economy in several different ways;(4) damaged our healthcare, food safety and research pipelines; 1/n

Let me introduce you to Donald Trump and MAGA....they have no idea how to run a business.

In two years Donald Trump has done a staggering amount to Make America Worse, poorer and weaker.

Dana Nessel is an excellent public servant and we'd all be much better off if she had run for the Senate.

Depending on the proposal it may be actively harmful because it transfers even more power to the executive.

This isn't an oversimplification. It's just utterly irrelevant to the problem.

A reasonable and possibly generous estimate is that a quarter of our 45 Presidents have been utter disasters. Once upon a time this didn't much matter...but either we need better ways to select a President, easier ways to remove one or a less powerful Presidency. Possibly all three.

Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
That idea is of course utterly nuts. I want to go back to the situation where that is sufficient to conclude it didn't happen that way.

Largely that is incorrect. Science is very much a team effort. To the extent that some individuals deserve more credit for the COVID vaccine, Dr. Fauci isn't at the top of the list

Interesting. I would suggest any word intended to denigrate someone based on membership in a group is a slur.
000 0
Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Though perhaps a better one is calling police officers pigs. Also a slur, also a non marginalized group.
100 0
Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
It's not currently a slur. But it is an example of a slur applied to a non marginalized group.

Both were. Tory was a term for outlaws or robbers and whigs a term for cattle drivers or horse thieves.

Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
You can have slurs that don't subordinate marginalized people. See "Whig" and "Tory".

Trump has little he wants to accomplish and doesn't believe in legislating or law. And, if there's a Dem Congress, he has a veto. So he just doesn't care what happens in the fall. (He's probably wrong, but that seems to be what's going on.)

It forces the MPs to communicate to the public anything they want the Lord's to consider so that the Lords are judging MPs on the same basis as the public.

Inquisitive Ursa @inquisitiveursa.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I was thinking something similar. Choose a 500 member house of Lords by sortition. Not allowed to personally meet any MP. Empowered to (1) delay bills until next parliament and (2) require new elections at any point.

There is a certain level at which the word scholar doesn't apply. Both of the individuals in question seem to fall well below that bar. The bigger issue in each case relates to the universities that hired them.
