Or, you can read this recent blog post by Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, who absolutely rips the idea of “model welfare” to shreds and thrashes various recent Anthropic blog posts and papers that discuss things like Claude’s “moral status, welfare, and consciousness.”

“AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. They do not have innate preferences or underlying motivations. They are sequence completion engines, internally hollow, designed to follow instructions, and accomplish goals set by humans,” Suleyman wrote. “Unfortunately, there’s a growing chorus of people who argue that AIs could now be, or may soon become, conscious. They argue that AIs may deserve rights and protections similar to those that we provide other conscious beings […] If this is how AI is developed, it will have a disastrous impact on the wellbeing of humanity.”"AIs do not have rights, feelings, or consciousness,” he added. “And we must not train them to act as though they do.”

Freddyjohnson 8yrs ago: TIL The first Roman fire brigade was created to be very lucrative. Arriving at the scene the fire fighters did nothing while a price was negotiated. Failing to reach a deal, the structure was allowed to burn to the ground after which an offer was made to purchase it for a fraction of its value.

Although it's right in OP's link, this is how Crassus made his fortune - he was the wealthiest person in antiquity. Yes, the one that went after Spartacus.

A neat read about Kracauer as I think about reality for a little bit... "For Kracauer...film cements us in our fragmenting physical reality rather than furthering us to some ethereal elsewhere." mubi.com/en/notebook/...
“If you disregard for a moment articulate beliefs, ideological imperatives, special undertakings, and the like, there still remain the sorrows and satisfactions, discords and feasts, wants and pursuits, which mark the ordinary business of living. Products of habit and microscopic interaction, they form a resilient texture which changes slowly and survives wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and revolutions. Films tend to explore this texture of everyday life, whose compositions varies according to people, place, and time. So they help us not only to appreciate our given material environment but to extend it in all directions. They virtually make the world our home.”

The Sonya / Mileena fight is really good. Like it feels Hong Kong while also staying in that fantasy world, and it's also really physical. The performers are stuntpeople as well as actors, and it's edited well -- good closeups on key hits and stuff

I really noticed him in Moon 44 where he played like a bad guy that comes around to be a good guy...he has this moment that's very "Executioner standing on the Bifrost," y'know? And after that, just always rooted for him whenever he showed up

www.404media.co/doom-loop-op...
The court filing cites an internal Microsoft document that found that AI products steal from human content creators, then cannibalize clicks from the people and websites they’ve stolen from, thereby destroying their business models.

“Our AI content strategy has started a ‘doom loop’ that will hurt the performance of our models and the entire web at the same time: It is highly unusual that an end-product threatens the economic foundations of its essential suppliers, but that is the situation we have created for our LLM business with respect to its ‘content supply chain,’” the document said. None of this is at all surprising to anyone who has been paying attention to the development of generative artificial intelligence, but the document, taken in whole, is a real they-admit-it situation. OpenAI’s and Microsoft’s lawyers have been trying to argue that their model training is fair use and transformative under copyright law and that they are building something that is fundamentally different from the human labor that it was trained on. But internally, these executives know that what they have built has been built on stolen content and that the products they’ve made are cannibalizing the sources they’ve stolen from and destroying the internet as we know it.

Little interview with Dave Cockrum (lot of interesting nuggets here...) twomorrows.com/comicbookart...
CBA: Along with Gil Kane, you're one of the best costume designers in the business.

Dave: That's one of the things I like to do. Possibly my costumes have a dated look now because everybody likes bandoliers and bolts and tennis shoes today. I still like stuff that looks like super-hero costumes.
