Pelicans: a magnificent freshwater bird, once native to England, now lost. Today's feature examines when and, crucially, why these birds went extinct – and what it would take to bring them back to our wetlands. By @aukwardlucia.bsky.social. www.inkcap.co.uk/the-bones-of...

Having had a similar reaction to Helen, I interviewed Dr Lucy Hawkes, who researches tuna in the northeast, to ask why scientists were celebrating these deaths. Our conversation is in this week's edition of Ground Cover. Read it here: www.inkcap.co.uk/the-fall-and...

Appreciate that fake culls of Dartmoor ponies are now yesterday’s news, but thanks to @inkcapjournal.bsky.social for correcting the record on this! -
Fake news | The purported plan to cull Dartmoor ponies prompted media mayhem, with Kemi Badenoch calling it ‘total madness’. However, environmentalists were quick to call out false information. Campaigner Guy Shrubsole described the debate as a ‘conspiracy theory being whipped up on social media’, while Ben Goldsmith took to X to argue that the ‘interesting part is why they are telling lies about murdering ponies’. The Dartmoor Nature Alliance looks at the origins of this ‘deluge of misinformation’ in more detail in this helpful blog, particularly the complexity of the underlying agri-environment schemes. It points out that the ‘campaign’ to protect the ponies from the supposed cull may actually have the opposite effect, of removing them from the financial subsidies that currently support them. Meanwhile, commentary in the Times argues that government quangos should be culled instead of ponies.

I find it absolutely shocking that it's legally permissable to cut down an ancient tree. Yet it is. A new long read on @inkcapjournal.bsky.social explores this extraordinary legislative failure. www.inkcap.co.uk/why-isnt-bri...

Why isn’t Britain protecting its ancient trees?
Britain's ancient trees are uniquely vulnerable to vandalism, neglect and sanctioned destruction. It's time to protect them.

Today, we have published an essay by @jon-moses.bsky.social on why it's time to reclaim rewilding in Wales. Come for the Edwardian naturalist being astonished by massive snakes, stay for the assessment of why rural Wales needs nature restoration. www.inkcap.co.uk/the-welsh-ar...

A (quite personal) essay from me about reclaiming rewilding in Wales, out in @inkcapjournal.bsky.social today. I was born, raised and still live in rural Wales. My ancestral farmhouse is a ruin surrounded by conifer trees. I understand the fears. But it's the loss of nature I fear far more.
