Hello, midsummer sun
The sun peaking over the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. A globe of firey starstuff over calm waves, orange and red spreading out into the sky.

I wandered across some amazing graffiti art in the Mission, San Francisco. Here are a few.
A frog in a space helmet.A multicolored bird spreads its wings with a Guanacaste Province flag on its breast, standing in a field of flowers, under two suns and a moon.A man in deep gold stares off into the distance through a colorful, and flowing abstract design. An image of a family resisting the military with flowers and guitars.

There are a lot of birds outside my window this morning. Whether you call it machine learning or "AI", Merlin is such a fine example of how computing can connect us to the more-than-human-world. Do you have any favorite examples of tools that do that? merlin.allaboutbirds.org
A painting screenshot of the Merlin app running on Android, showing that it recognized Song Sparrow, Morning Dove, Northern Cardinal, White-throated Sparrow, and Blue Jay.A detail page in Merlin for the White-throated Sparrow. A small round bird with brown and white flecked wings and a spot of yellow around the eyes, and white below its mouth. A graphic shows that it is present most of the year in Silver Spring, Maryland, except for June, July, August and September.A map of migration and breeding patterns in Turtle Island (aka North America). I think it shows that these White-throated Sparrows are headed north for breeding.

I went to my local public library, where there were lots of people, chatting, reading, looking at screens. I looked to the right and saw a book I wanted to read so I checked it out. So, yeah, I'm having a nice day. More please.

@kdriscoll I am currently trying very hard to restrain myself from buying some of the prints:

@wragge have you looked at the interface on mobile yet? I was confused what to do on my android phone:
A screenshot of a mobile device display showing a map in the top portion, and some truncated, unscrollable text describing the map in bottom portion.

I was walking along the WB&A Trail earlier today and ran across this abandoned complex of buildings, which turned out to be an abandoned tuberculosis sanatorium. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Dale_Ho…

I attempted to go to take a walk with the hound at Patuxent Wildlife Area, but it was unexpectedly closed, I guess because of the snow and ice that still lingers. I found a utility road alongside some power lines and railroad tracks near Bowie to stretch our […] [Original post on merveilles.town]

Fun times with the now teenage kids who actually wanted to go trawling for LPs in some Chicago record stores. This choice record by GSH was playing in one. I looked it up later only to learn it was recorded close to where we live in Silver Spring, Maryland […] [Original post on merveilles.town]

The Document by Maggie Smith from: Poetry Jan/Feb 2026 www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymaga… #theLibrary
Document

The day is winter bright. I blink against it. Each time the sun glints in my eyes, each time I close my lids & let them go

orange & freckled with light, my mind files it into a folder that contains every other time

it's happened before: folders nested inside folders going back, I imagine, to one morning standing in my crib,

waiting for my mother to reach down & lift me out, the sun keeping me company until her arms appeared.

In the file: sun, sun_2, sun_3, sun_75, sun_700. Each a document I can return to & open, even revising

old experience with new thinking. As if the eye has its own memory-not the mind's eye but the eye's mind-

cataloging material it claims as its own. Cataloging as long as I live. Sun_7000, sun_final, sun_final_revised, sun_final_final.

A neighbor had a yard sale recently as she was moving overseas, and we picked up a couple of her Kenwood space heaters. As the weather has turned cold they really are nice to keep nearby while turning the house thermostat down.
An image of what looks like a small radiator with some knobs and switches to control heat. It is sitting on a wood floor.
