Oh this one is such a pet peeve of mine. I think there's definitely some insecurity in that mentality or at least a lack of conviction in their own tastes. Wraps around to the artist having to be positive all the time on the off chance they insult something someone else likes (a grave sin)

exactly... ya like I see bids like "we want more sincere, weird, subversive, etc etc" art but you can't have sincerity in a space where "don't talk down on yourself" is an unwritten rule. i think knowing the artist's feelings & emotional state is a really valuable part of how someone experiences art
