The investigation found 131 active mining permits overlapping community forests, covering about 4,250 km², or 9% of land under mining titles. 45 canceled or inactive permits also continue to threaten forests. Most exposed in South Kivu, Haut-Katanga, & North Kivu.

According to @globalforests.bsky.social data, the rate of natural forest loss in South Sudan has been increasing since the turn of the century. This is particularly evident in SS’s Equatoria region: the southern area of the country, where most timber is logged and exported to Uganda.

Between 2019 and 2025, hardwood timber imports from South Sudan into Uganda's premier industrial hub, Namanve Industrial Park, reached an estimated US$23 million. African mahogany is one of East Africa's most valuable hardwoods, yet the journey it takes from forest to market.

Over three years ago, Mwase residents near Lubumbashi (DRC) were granted almost 10,000 hectares of local forest for self-management, with support from the UN FAO. A leadership committee was established to oversee sustainable income activities.
