Last week, the ocean got hotter than it has ever been since we started measuring. How do we know the ocean is heating? Who measures it, and how? What can a temperature reading from a drifting sensor in the middle of the Pacific actually prove? And where does that data fall short?
Text: Sure, swimming in the ocean is great. But have you tried investigating it?

Today, we're shedding some light on a very specific method for investigating the invisible stories hidden in our oceans. Investigation Toolbox #03Text: The ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface. And a surprising amount of what happens there leaves behind data: temperature, sea-level changes, ocean currents, or even changes in marine ecosystems.

For an investigator, that data can become evidence.Text: maybe your evidence is floating around the ocean. Literally. Thousands of drifting instruments collect measurements from the world's oceans.

The Argo programme alone has more than 4,000 floats, measuring things like temperature and salinity below the surface.

Drifters can also help track currents, pollutants and marine debris. A dataset doesn't always begin in a spreadsheet. Sometimes it begins with a floating sensor in the middle of the sea.Text: NO need to become an oceanographer to investigate the ocean. But knowing what data exists, where it comes from, what it can reveal and where its limitations are can open up completely different ways of investigating environmental stories.

[🛠️ Investigation Toolbox #02] Sometimes the difference between finding a lead and missing it altogether isn't what you search - it's how you search. Read the guide here: kit.exposingtheinvisible.org/en/google-do...
Text: Search Smarter. Not Harder. filetype: google dorking. Google Dorking (or simply dorking) is the practice of using advanced search operators to uncover publicly available information that doesn't usually appear in a regular search.

Think of it as speaking the search engine's language instead of hoping it understands yours.Text: Why investigators use it? Instead of searching broadly, dorking lets you search precisely.
locate public reports and documents,
search within a specific website,
narrow results by file type,
discover archived or overlooked sources,
refine large investigations.Text: A reminder: Dorking helps you find publicly indexed information. It doesn't give permission to access restricted systems or download sensitive data.
Like any investigative method, use it responsibly, ethically, and with your own digital safety in mind. Text: Learn the technique. Not just the operators.
Tactical Tech's Exposing the Invisible Kit explains how dorking works, when to use it, and how to do it responsibly.

🔎 Every investigator has a few tools they keep coming back to. That's why we're starting our Investigation Toolbox series with The Wayback Machine by @archive.org. Discover more about Wayback Machine as a tool to retrieve information: web.archive.org
Text: Investigation Toolbox #01. The internet never forgets (Well... almost.) We’ve all clicked on a link that suddenly leads nowhere: a deleted article or a website that doesn’t look like what we saw two days ago. But missing doesn’t always mean gone.

Wayback Machine archives snapshots of websites over time, allowing you to revisit pages as they appeared months or even years earlier.Text: Investigative journalists use The Wayback Machine to: Recover deleted webpages
Compare changes across different versions of a website
Verify previous public statements
Preserve references during long-term investigations
Add historical context to digital evidenceText: Evolving narratives. Websites are constantly evolving. Companies may update policies, organisations may revise reports.
Looking at a single version of a webpage only tells you what exists today.
Comparing versions can reveal how a narrative, policy, or public position has changed over time.
Text: A few things to keep in mind: Verification and contrasting information are always crucial.
Not every webpage has been archived.
Some websites prevent archiving altogether.
Archived pages may not capture interactive content or embedded media.
If a webpage becomes important to your reporting, don’t rely solely on web archives, save your own copy as well.
