I really like my job some days. Today I got to talk with students about atonal music, Plato, Pseudo-Dionysus, Raphael, transformative experience, Petrarch, choosing new aesthetic identities, and Olivia Rodrigo's new Vogue Philippines shoot.

On the topic du jour: I teach a one-credit, conversation-focused class each fall on any topic I want. This time I decided we would all read 1-3 books together and let the students choose. The picked EAST OF EDEN. (Other options in photos.) The kids are all right.

Option 1: The Individual in Nature (Three Short Novellas)

The Island by Gary Paulsen - a teenage boy figures out life by spending time alone on an island, watching nature closely, by one of the great YA authors

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk - an isolated woman who translates William Blake poems and loves nature investigates mysterious deaths, by the Nobel Prize-winning Polish author

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers - a a nonbinary monk goes looking for what happened to the robots, who left humans generations earlier, by one of our great contemporary sci-fi authorsOption 2: Love, Then and Now (Two Novels)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - the basis of a thousand rom-coms, this novel dives deeply into what it means to realize things about yourself and your society that you'd rather not know, by the great English novelist

Heart the Lover by Lily King - two college students love each other, but have trouble making it work, by one of our best living American authorsOption 3: On Being Different and Being Good (Three Short Novels)

Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville - a beautiful young man faces death on a ship, by the author of Moby-Dick

The Right Mistake by Walter Mosley - a frank depiction of an ex-con who tries to organize his acquaintances into a Thinkers' Club who will address problems in 1990s Los Angeles, by one of the great Black authors of the last fifty years (note: descriptions of violent crimes)

Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #1) by Martha Wells - a hacked security unit (part machine, part human) just wants to watch his shows but has to save humans instead, the first in a series about my favorite character of the 21st century (note: some sci-fi violence)
