The Night Gift by Patricia McKillip turned out to be the only non-fantasy title in her large catalogue, so reading it for a fantasy book challenge didn’t really work. That being said, it’s a surprisingly modern book for being from the 70’s. 3 young girls deal with adolescence and a Very Big Thing

Sometimes what you need is cute, tropey, funny, quirky romance about a librarian and a shapeshifting dragon doing research and having adventures. Sometimes you need Nobody Told Me Dragons Use Libraries. I especially appreciated an neurospicy MC who is aware of how her brain works, and unapologetic

NGL I only read Small Things Like These because it was the smallest book on a Goodreads challenge list. I’m too tired at the moment for books that are ‘deep’ and ‘worthy’, and a second book about Homes for Unwed mothers was like touching a bruise. Oh well, I was already depressed

The problem is that Grady Hendrix sounds like he should be my jam, but it just doesn’t quite fit right for me. Every premise of his books sounds amazing, but I’m not the right reader. In this one a group of unwed mothers in 1970 get mixed up with witchcraft. Made me sad

The Babysitter Lives by Stephen Graham Jones was a strange one for me. I’m not sure what I was expecting. The set up was pure slasher, but it felt….sadder than that. I enjoyed the Buffalo Hunter Hunter, so I will definitely try another one of his. My Heart is a Chainsaw is on the list

In a world where soulmates exist, if you don’t find yours by 25 you get put into prison with a hunger games style population control. So far, so ridiculous. But somehow….ridiculously fun? Kill to Love by Penny Sunday looks like it’s a debut novel

Tenderly I Am Devoured by Lyndall Clipstone is about a girl who finds herself engaged to an underworld god (shades of Persephone) but caught up in her feelings for both a brother and a sister from a wealthy family. Possession and obsession.

This is the horror of dreary minutia and dehumanisation, and pettiness. It’s casual cruelty and it’s brilliant, but possibly not something that I could ever reread. Or ever forget. Dystopian corporate cannibalism is actually a believable future

I normally like my horror a bit camp, or intellectual, or the kind of dreamy gorgeousness of Sarandon and Deneuve in The Hunger Tender is the flesh is the exact opposite of this

Nothing But the Rain by Naomi Salman is a devastating and brilliant novella with an alternative narrative structure. A small town is quarantined by mysterious armed forces after the rain starts stealing people’s memories. Will mess you up (And you’ll be grateful)

Generation Trauma x Haunted House yet somehow still a little bit cosy, because T. Kingfisher is a genius. A House With Good Bones by @tkingfisher.com (Not for anyone with a fear of bugs) (Please also check this fear re. the ridiculously good Wolf Worm) (Because NIGHTMARES guys)

A guide from a secretive group of “pathfinders” that help people navigate a world consumed by dangerous magical beings rescues a mysterious (and handsome) man from being executed. He thinks she’s flirting with him. Pathfinder’s Way and Mist’s Edge

This is a kind of poor, white, southern community halfway between Magic town, and normal-ville where people love feuds and cursing is an art form. I hate the covers, but the books are great.

I loved the Kate Daniel’s series, but I think that I like this slightly cosier spin off version better. Chaos still happens, but Kate begins and ends happy Magic Tides and Magic Claims (no clams!) by @ilonaandrews.bsky.social

What if the creepy, haunted, porcelain doll wasn’t the villain of the story, but was the victim….. Firstly, I didn’t expect to actually be brought to tears by a haunted freaking doll. Bravo Barbara Truelove and @bindary_books

I did myself a disfavour when reading Slasher Summer by expecting it to not be a slasher. I was expecting genre subversions for some reason, and didn’t let myself just go with it. A high school scary movie club gets together years after high school. Things get…..slashy.

Hear the Dead, coming October. A 66 year old former punk photographer who is losing her hearing to tinnitus goes viral after the death of a famous punk rocker brings her photos into the public eye. Which would be great if she wasn’t being haunted by her best friend’s death 40 years ago…..

I hope this email finds you in hell is what happens if you mix a workplace romance with the tv show supernatural. Ghosts, demons, deals, and fixing the f***ing fax machine. I would have lived to see a little more of the hellscape infrastructure, but you can’t have everything from your katabasis

Despite my love of Seanan McGuire, I had somehow missed reading her Mira Grant Parasitology trilogy. Dear Gods. This book is brilliant, terrifying, prescient, and deeply strange to read in a post-pandemic world. She made me have feelings for parasitic invertebrates!!!!!!!!!

There was a reddit thread about which celebrity would you NOT be surprised at if they turned out to be a serial killer. Answers were interesting Mindy McGinnis might have a book coming out in January that asks a similar question. What if a billionaire pop star was a serial killer?

I’ve seen this book critiqued for how unobservant the MC is, but I’ve also known a lot of academics and scientists, and it tracks. Did I get sucked into a cute rom-com trailer? Absolutely. Did I proceed to read the whole book in about two hours? When I should be asleep? And it was suddenly 3am

Book friends: If you go to a book launch, and pre-purchase a book with your ticket, does that count towards the authors first week sales, or for the date of the event? If I’ve got tickets for an event two weeks after the official release date, is it better for the author for me to buy beforehand?

Now reading They Watch From Below by Katya De Becerra, & it’s totally getting to me with it’s moody, atmospheric, dark academia vibes I also love that it’s inspired by the authors memories of her undergrad anthropology degree, which is giving me nostalgia for my own anthro undergrad.

I love @angelaslatter and her Sourdough world with my whole heart. Her ability to fill her books with small details that turn out to be super important later blows my mind. The Crimson Road feels like The Avengers of the Sourdough world, where those details, characters, & plots all tie together >

Over the many summers she starts to see the problems in the kingdom and the need to fix them. Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn is one that I’ve read over a dozen times, and I still find something new in it. It’s deeply, achingly romantic, but it’s written almost between the pages.

There’s a new tv show out based on Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquival, so I figured that now was a good time for a reread. It’s been about twenty years since I read it, but all I’m wondering is HOW did I miss the darkness and the trauma!!!! I remembered the food magic, but Jeepers!

It was more spicy than I expected from a book about faith, darker than I expected from something categorised as romance, and a little unsettling. Which in really didn’t mind at all. The Golem of Mala Lubovnya. How this was only my second golem book (after Feet of Clay) is a surprise to me
