Help! This London-based band LEAP just dropped their new single "Bury Me," and we can't stop playing it! Come fall in love with LEAP alongside us!

LEAP Into "Bury Me" and Fall In Love With This London Post-Indie Rock Band
From London in the UK, post-indie rock **LEAP** is leaning into the emo and electronic sounds to create a sound of their own sound all together! The grittier vocals with the rougher, noise-heavy production style are reminiscent of early 2000s alt rock. Their production is well-rounded, but full, leaving no part of the song too barren. On the 23rd of October, **LEAP** released their newest single "Bury Me", a song that beckons you to listen to it over and over again. * * * "Bury Me" Single Cover Art * * * This song opens with an intro that has banger guitar riffs and drum runs that work in tandem to create a vibe that keeps the crowd grooving till the very first words. The very first lyrics, "_Talk to me like I'm a stranger_ ," are a callout right off the bat that pulls the listener in and asks them to listen. It really gives the feel that the listener is being addressed at first before moving into, " _Tell me one thing / Send me on my way,_ " which progresses the song into feeling like it is a track again. But the chorus is really where the lyrics and sound become more than just 2-dimensional. "_So would you promise me that you'll feel lonely / Cause I would fall asleep just to see you there / But if you buried me underneath the concrete / Then you should lay with me just to make it fair_ ," are honestly such beautifully done lines. Speaking of the lyrics, you can check out the lyric video on YouTube. * * * * * * **LEAP** has a great sound that I could hear in a lot of different types of films and shows. I could see "Bury Me" in shows like Shameless or Euphoria and in films such as the newer _Spider-Man_ movies and even in movies more like _Obsession_ , as the lyrics hit both notes that can be relatable, but have a darker wording to the lyrics without being just straight-up edgy. Honestly, that's a talent, and I hope that you are pitching for sync, because this track could ramp a scene up perfectly. This band and their music are definitely going to go far not just in that regard, but also with what a great radio song this would be! Airtime for this one could take off, and I hope they can secure a lot! I know I added it to my own Car Ride Playlist, because it would be such a great song for joyrides as you yell along with it! * * * ****Photo Credit:**** Andreas Wöckinger * * * **LEAP** was a new band to me, and I am really glad I found them, as I have really fallen in love with their music! I am looking forward to even more music and maybe catching them on a Texas show date if possible, as I know this band has to be so much fun live! Make sure you go listen to "Bury Me" and don't stay a stranger to LEAP! * * * ****Photo Credit:**** JawmidnightP * * * > **Meet the Members of LEAP!** **Jack “Jacky” Scott** - Vocalist **Hector “Heccy” Cottam** - Drummer **Declan “Deccy” Brown** - Bassist **Adam “The Pixie” Mason - Guitarist** * * * LEAP's Instagram LEAP's Website

From the concrete jungle, Glasswaves has risen to prominence in the alt scene and has finally dropped their long-anticipated debut album. Holding back wasn't in their books for this LP.
musicscenemedia.com
Glasswaves Released Their Debut LP, "while(True)," And It Is A Whole Universe
From Rochester, New York, comes the alternative rock band that's blending dark pop into their sound and taking the scene by surprise; meet **Glasswaves**. Since releasing their first single, "Dead Dreams," back in 2023, and a cavalcade of singles and EPs ever since, **Glasswaves** is finally giving us their debut album! **Glasswaves** creates emotionally charged, atmospheric, and melodic music that carries deep meaning and well-crafted lyricism. The production takes their music to the next level, adding more layers to the already full tracks. They found a sound and aesthetic that works well for them and have started to cement a place for themselves in the bigger ranks. * * * "while(True)" Single Cover Art * * * On the 23rd of October, **Glasswaves** gave us an early Halloween treat by dropping their LP, _while(True)_. This band has had many eyes and ears on them in the last little while alone, and we'd all been wondering when we'd get the debut LP, but now it's clear why it took so long to get one. This album is well-done, and the songs are made to keep you engaged without being too overwhelming or overstimulating. The vocals are great, from the cleans to the harshes. I love that even the cleans are raspier so that there is a smoother transition into harsher, as paradoxical as that can sound. Between that and the instrumentals having a very digitized production style in places, the album is a fun take on the digital core/Myspace core sounds that are coming back around and are big in metalcore right now. They add in elements like skips, what sounds like fan chopping to the words at times, and more that keep you searching for what all you can hear and pull from their production. Some of my favorite songs off the LP are "FALSE_glow:", "_< <bye>>_," and "Save[face]". Personally, I really felt the theme of "Save[face]" and loved the ending lines "Been dead from the start / And I'll never see the end / I let it tear me apart, Denied the restart / Save face in a new mask,_"_ especially as I felt it not only summed up the chorus and verses well, but were also words that I do connect with on a personal level. Honestly, "<<bye>>" is probably my favorite song from an overall theme, lyrics, and production style-wise, as well as the heavier the song, the happier I am almost every time, so that was a banger! I love that they add so many different effects to that song, but none were corny or felt misplaced; they fell right into place with the rest of the song's composition! "<<bye>>" is 100 percent my healing song for the rest of the year! * * * * * * I love music videos, and **Glasswaves** really gave us a solid storyline and production with the video for "Swarm.ING_." This video follows the frontman, seemingly positioned in the plot as a medical science patient going through testing on some kind of chip and drug, and by the end it seems what was fighting in his mind made its way out. Honestly, I would love to yap about the music video more, but I don't think I could break this one down in a timely fashion, so make sure you watch it! **Glasswaves** is taking us on an adventure with this album. They have crafted the storyline of a pharmaceutical company that is using a med-tech chip and drug called "Neuro Veil" during psychological testing. The doctor who is running the medical study, though, is actually trying to hunt down an entity known as "The Veil," which only appears when one of the tests fails, embodying the subject's deepest desires. The consequences of the entity's appearance are always less than savory, but Glasswaves is taking us with them on the ride. * * * Photo Credit: Kelly Hough * * * With the debut album out now, I think we can let **Glasswaves** have their space among the bands taking off within the scene. I have been excited for this to come out, and they did not let me down. I highly recommend that you all give the album a listen and also give the "Swarm.ING_" video a view! Till next time! * * * Photo Credit: Kelly Hough * * * > **Meet Glasswaves** **Noah Rich** – Lead Vocals **Owen Miller** – Guitar **Brendan Curtis** – Bass * * * Glasswaves' IG Glasswaves' Website

The new album, BE NOT AFRAID, by Polyphia is out now; here's what we think.
musicscenemedia.com
BE NOT AFRAID: Polyphia’s new album is here!
Back with their sixth studio album, **Polyphia** has released their highly anticipated new album, _BE NOT AFRAID_. The instrumental metal group is made up of guitarists Tim Henson, Scott LePage, bassist Clay Gober, and drummer Clay Aeschilman. It’s been four years since the Texan band's last album, _Remember That You Will Die_. Since then, their loyal fan base has skyrocketed to over 1.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The band is redefining and popularizing instrumental metal music, making their message loud and clear without any lyrics. The record starts off with "LET THERE BE LIGHT.” An echoey guitar starts us off that crescendos into a bass-heavy electronic beat. The track also features some heavenly chorus-like sounds layered throughout the established guitar and electric beats. “WITH EYES TO SEE" introduces a beat with a groovy futuristic feel. Almost halfway through the song there is a switch-up in the beat. It slows down and becomes a really bass-heavy explosion. It’s like you're running through a minefield as all these epic heavy beats are exploding around you. “WITH EYES TO SEE” fades into the next track, “SCREWTAPE.” The industrial beat and distorted guitar really showcase the talents of the guitarists in this band. This is one of the shorter tracks on the album that any guitar player is going to listen to and think, “how the hell did they do that?” “POWER IN THE BLOOD” strikes with those incredibly fast guitars once again. The song kind of reminds me of a badass video game fight. There’s a lot going on but also moments that zone you into an atmosphere unlike any other. Switching to a more mischievous vibe, “THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO” has lighter strings in the beginning that are then slammed into strong guitar riffs and beats. The song also brings a heavier vibe towards the end of the song that later comes full circle with the return of the light strings finishing off the track. PHOTO CREDIT: Facebook “MARK OF THE BEAST” starts off more hip hop heavy in the beginning. There are some distorted lyrics/spoken word that lead into ambient guitar plucking. It doesn’t take long for the heavier beats to drop in along with those signature guitar screeches that Polyphia is best at. The song gives moments for the guitar to shine, pausing all sound effects and just letting the guitar speak for itself. “CAN YOU FEEL IT” gives 80's synths their moment. The intro of the track introduces these 80s-sounding synths that are synced in so perfectly into Polyphia’s signature song. This song highlights how expansive Polyphia are, artistically. Wasting zero time with “NEAR DEATH,” bringing you into the world of Polyphia. This track is definitely what I would consider to be one of their rhythmically faster songs. If I were a runner, I would be adding this song so quickly onto my running playlist. “J-BOMB” reminds us of their hip hop influences and almost gives a feeling of champion to it. I can imagine this song going so well with a sports highlight reel for some reason. There’s an air of confidence to it that stands out in a way that’s different from the rest of the songs off the album. “DENY THE FLESH,” also has that same confidence to it. There’s a power behind this track that really gives this song an edge in comparison to the rest of the albums. There are parts of the song where the guitar slows down but still maintains its power. The bells in “DEVIL GET BEHIND ME” are ecclesiastical, echoing in the beginning of the track. There’s a lot of speed behind this track as it progresses, and it's incredibly impressive. This song feels like such a headbanger I can just already picture the barricade of their shows going absolutely insane for this song. The final track, “FEAR GOD,” has this otherworldly theme to it that is unwavering. No matter how drastic of a change up there is in the song, it feels like it came from a different universe. This song brings chaos and dare I say…fear. There are parts of the song/rhythm that do repeat but explore very different sounds throughout the almost five-minute track. The entire album has an avant-garde profoundness to it. Polyphia, not only in this album, but in general, have this individualism about them that is unlike anything else. There are theatrics within each track that leave you breathless in only a way Polyphia can do. You can tell the band seems to be inspired by so many different influences. That is not only reflected not only in their entire body of work but especially in this album.

Windwaker on Authenticity, Evolution, and Life Under the Spotlight
If rules are made to be broken, then Australian alt-metalcore outfit **Windwaker** are the ones rewriting them. Their sound combines rock, hip-hop, pop, and metal breakdowns into something that feels perfectly natural. Their third full-length album, _smile, you’re on camera_ , showcases their ever-evolving sound while confronting the exhaustion of remaining authentic while living in the spotlight. > To me, we’re a rock band with very eclectic influences. It’s important for the emotional spectrum to be just as varied as the genre spectrum, though. The album is quite dark and hopeless, but it also hones in on finding your way through. You can hear our frustration with the world. However, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. We recently had the opportunity to chat with vocalist **Liam Guinane** about the creation of the album, the evolution of the band, and how their definition of success has changed over the years. * * * * * * WEBSITE // INSTAGRAM // FACEBOOK // YOUTUBE // SPOTIFY

A Lesson in Rage: A Review of Moon Goons New Single "Wrath Bath"
I rose out of bed this morning bright and early at the crack of noon. After a yawn and a stretch, I’m ready for my morning menthol and a little walkabout. So I go wandering out onto the streets of Broad Ripple with a can-do attitude and a joint in my pocket, just looking for something to get into. I end up at my local record store, always good for something to listen to, and start hassling the clerks about what’s new. They put me on to a new Moon Goons track that just dropped. I love Moon Goons just as much as the next guy, so I figured, hey, why not do a review? If you’re not in the know, then allow me to fill you in on exactly what Moon Goons is. What we’re talking about here is the pioneering force behind some of the weirdest psychedelic rock that Indianapolis had to offer. These self-proclaimed “goblin rockers” write raw jams stuffed with tasty hooks and mind-melting riffs, which bridge the gaps between psychedelia, stoner metal, and several other various burnout genres. Their latest single “Wrath Bath” is only the latest knockout in their ever-growing discography. “Wrath Bath” leans fairly far into the stoner metal category of what Moon Goons has to offer. It’s a barrage of heavily distorted guitars, crash-heavy drum lines, snarling vocals, and a guitar solo which hits like the first puff off a canister of whippets; don’t do whippets, kids. The effects on the guitars are haunting, ghostly, alien. Alien, like something out of the X-Files. It’s very…I don’t know, digital sound, I guess. Like if you pumped a dial-up modem full of 2-cb and attempted to get it to translate something from an extraterrestrial script into English. It’s a static, climbing sound, somewhat like a theremin, which runs throughout the length of the song. Alongside this is some of the nastiest shredding you’ve ever heard, paired with a heart-stopping rhythm section and gravely vocals, which make you want to rage. “Wrath Bath” is a song meant to inspire its very namesake: wrath. You hear it, and you want to throw a Molotov cocktail through the windshield of a police cruiser, then throw the charred-out remains into neutral and ram that fucker right through an embankment into a quarry where it may explode into a dazzling display of molten steel and irritated plastic. “Wrath Bath” is streaming everywhere now, so those of us who don’t rise until late in the day have a little treat to wake up to today, don’t we? I would advise you to wait to listen to the track until you can get into your car, so you can be surrounded by a sound system with enough juice to do it justice, but quite frankly, the song may convince you it’s a good idea to slam your slab into a brick wall just to see if you can’t tear the thing down. It’s probably safer you hear it for the first time played through the phone of the clerk at your favorite record store, as I did, or, at the very least, somewhere where your visceral reaction will cause as little collateral damage as possible.

New Jersey pop-punk trio Northvale just gave us a track that not only delivers the old-school sound but also a great concept! Let's talk about their newest single, "Not Myself"!
musicscenemedia.com
"Not Myself" Is The Pop Punk Song We Were Craving, And You Can Thank Northvale For The Delivery
Pop punk has taken on a lot of faces and variety in sound over the years, but there will always be something about that older-school sound and the rawer feel it carries with it. **Northvale** , a pop punk trio from New Jersey, knows exactly how to bring that sound into the present year of 2026! With fun hooks and those killer riff/drum combos that made their runs back in the day, they keep their sound pulling in both new and old fans. With snappy lines and vocals that wander between melodies, harmonies, and even some raspy yells, they are exactly what I expect from a band that keeps the genre alive! On the 15th of October, **Northvale** dropped their banger single "_Not Myself_ " just in time for the bluer months of the year, and I know what song I will be playing through my October Slide! * * * "__Not Myself__ " Single Cover Art * * * "Not Myself" is a song that hits heavy on the topic of mental health while making it feel fun, light, and airy. This song is a lovely ode to losing yourself while trying to become what you want to be, which is a topic not touched on enough at all. _"We spend years running toward our goals, pushing ourselves to the absolute limit, until one day you stop and realize you don’t even recognize the person you’ve become. "Not Myself" is about the breaking point. It’s the moment you look in the mirror and ask if the dream you’ve been chasing is worth the pieces of yourself that you’ve lost along the way,"_ the band explains in their own words. It's a punch to the gut with punchy lines and a phenomenal beat. I really love the chorus as it comes in swinging with lyrics like "_Break me outta the place / Can't find a way to escape / What am I fighting for / (Stop saying that / Stop saying that)_ / Say that there's no way to survive / And I have been wasting my life." What a home run, hitting the stomach in song form! * * * ****Photo Credits:**** Facebook * * * The potential for this song and band is sky-high, as I can see the fit for sync and radio, as well as them being a hit at shows and festivals, as a nail on the head. Just like in the early 2000s! Speaking of shows, make sure to catch **Northvale l** ive at the Bowery Place in New York City, New York, on the 15th of November! * * * * * * "_Not Myself_ " is an instant playlist add for me! It's fun, it's meaningful, and it's just right for the kind of nostalgia music that I love as an old-school pop punk fiend. Go listen now; you'll fall in love with Northvale too! I can see **Northvale** making a rise as they continue their adventure in music, and I hope that they do! I'd love to turn on my radio one day and hear Northvale play on the Texas radio! "Break My Back:" A Look at the new Bev Rage & the Drinks Single
When I was a younger man living in the northwest corner of Indiana, I would occasionally find a weekend away from crisscrossing the backroads of the Great Lakes region and rough camping, or squatting, as the cops liked to call it, on the shores of my dear inland seas. On these rare sabbaticals, I liked to go into Chicago and see what sort of issues I could cause. This led to many instances wherein I squirmed into bars, clubs, and basement venues I had no business in, being that I was a minor. And yet I had plentiful amounts of mushrooms to bribe the doormen, women, and theys with, which allowed me both entry to these venues and the opportunity to see hundreds of incredible underground acts, like, for instance, Bev Rage and the Drinks. These cats are a group of punk rockers, fronted by one Beverly Rage, Chicago's own vicious queen of drag, who have taken over the Windy City's punk scene. I gas them up, but in this case you don't have to just take the dirty hippie’s word for it, as the band won the title of Chicago's Best Punk Band in 2024 and again in 2025, so if you didn't believe me, you may now suck it. If you’ve been flying so far under the radar that you haven’t heard of these punk-rock all-stars yet, well, now you have, and now is the time to get caught up. Coming spring of 2027, Bev Rage & the Drinks are dropping their fourth studio album, “Demons,” which means you have three other records to take in before the next equinox. But we’re not here today to talk about that, are we? No, we’re here to talk about the new single being released to tease the album, “Break My Back.” “Break My Back” is the sound of a grimy club lit up in neon and packed full of snarling creatures of the night. It’s a sardonic, overdriven storm of drums and guitars meant to rose-tint your world. A simple classic punk track bursting at the seams with intoxicating riffs and compressed vocals, which nip at the brain like a woodpecker at a tree until they are driven so far into your gray matter that you simply won’t ever be able to get them out. In typical Bev Rage & the Drinks fashion, the song is a twisting labyrinth of hot licks, tasty beats, and fun but ferocious lyrics, which play around with the concepts of heteronormativity and the dark side of queer nightlife; well, how bout that? Is that enough with the Rocky references? How about one more for those in the audience who can’t get down with a little queer culture in their feed: _eat shit and die!_ You can find “Break My Back” streaming everywhere now, so if you need a little pick-me-up today—and trust me, you do—this one’s for you. There’s nothing that livens up a chilly October morning like a red-hot punk tune blowing out your car's speakers, and that’s a fact. Give the track a try to see undeniable proof that nobody does punk rock like Chicago.

Northlane's new single "Deathwish," is out now, here's our thoughts.

Northlane Debuts New Track "Deathwish"
Australian metal band **Northlane** have a new album, "_Anemoia_ ," on the horizon. Produced by Jordan Fish, the band’s eighth album will be released on November 27th on all streaming platforms. Shortly after their album is released, Northlane will be opening for Dayseeker’s UK and European tour. Once Dayseeker’s tour wraps, it won’t be long till the band is back on the road again. The band has announced their headlining U.S. tour occurring February and March of 2027. Since the announcement of "Anemoia" the band has been releasing singles such as "Crucified," "Evian," and "CUT_it," today we look at their newest single Deathwish. This song starts out with a haunting echo of the lyrics “I tear the world apart just to feel your fractured heart explode. I’m the center of the universe, I'm blind to what you need.” Then BOOM, an electronic beat meant for circle pit unmatched kicks the song into overdrive. Vocally there’s a combination of speak-shouting lyrics that progressively get heavier and more scream-like. Now, to describe the breakdown. Imagine you’re in a spaceship flying around and it was already going fast, but then you pull a lever. That lever was the turbo speed, and suddenly you feel your whole body flying back towards your imaginary seat. Speaking of space, the lyrics come back often to, “I’m the center of the universe, I don’t care what you believe.” Reminds me of learning about the different historical models of the center of the universe when I was in school. For example, the heliocentric model, meaning the sun is the center of our solar system which was most commonly thought of in the 16th century. The lyrics seem to be a call out to anyone who refuses to be receptive to others and their lived experiences. “It’s all just projection, you’ve been neglected, you’re overprotective, but you’ve got a death wish.” Check out Northlane's upcoming shows! The singles are rolling out for the public to enjoy, and if this single indicates anything about "Anemoia," it’s an album like no other. It’s fiery, frantic, and has a dominance to it that’ll be captivating the masses. Northlane’s new album "Anemoia" will be out November 27th, 2026, and in the meantime, you can stream the singles from their album, including "Deathwish," below!

RXPTRS, from Bristol in the UK, discusses navigating grief through fiction in their upcoming EP, how they integrate the ethos of the house party into their music and where they're heading next.
musicscenemedia.com
RXPTRS on Exploring New Sides of Grief Through Music
RXPTRS have blasted onto the scene in recent years with their unique blend of metal, hardcore, punk, and almost certainly a few others. Since forming back in 2018, they've had runs of headline shows, high-profile support slots with the likes of **Escape the Fate** and **As It Is** , and filled out tents at major festivals like Download. Already with an incredible catalogue behind them, they're gearing up for the release of their next EP, **Tales of Ill Repute**. We caught up with **Simon Roach** and**Ian Chadderton** to discuss everything from dinosaurs to the magic behind their performance style and what to expect from them next. Let's get into it! ### MSM: Tell us a bit about the band - where did the name RXPTRS come from? Simon: It was probably longer trying to decide the name than writing the songs. We were trying to be clever, coming up with cultural references and pop culture references, and then we just went, ‘everyone likes dinosaurs!' Ian: There was kind of a hype at the time around bands spelling their names wrong. It actually helps because it’s easier to Google us! ### You mentioned that you started by playing house shows - how was that? Simon: Yeah, our first show was in my house, in my housemate's bedroom. We put out a little private event, and in the back of our heads we were going "this is going to leak…" and OH it leaked. Ian: If you wanna see the aftermath of that, we recorded our first music video for the first song we ever released. Simon: It set the tone for what our shows have always been. It doesn’t matter how big they are, like at Download, it [felt like] the biggest house party. The feeling we always want to create is a homey, safe, unhinged environment - everywhere is a house party if you’re brave enough! Check out the video here: ### Would you say you carry the house party, community vibes through to your recording process? Simon: No, we’re weirdly almost the opposite. We write for stadiums. We always think the biggest, especially the new record we’ve got. Every song was designed for mainstage Download, mainstage Bloodstock... It’s that big sound but with feral energy. Ian: I think we do bring the ethos of the house party into it, which is just mayhem. The fun part: I want it to be fun to play, and that energy needs to be part of it. ### You've spoken about how in your upcoming EP, Tales of Ill Repute, you used a fictional narrative, but the songs are based on real events. Can you go into a bit of detail about that? Simon: That came from me being very unable to fully vocalise my own feelings, and the overarching theme was getting over grief, and the stages that that goes through. Writing this EP drove me slightly bonkers, because every single song has a dual meaning. Something that’s very literal and then something thats very visceral. Ian: Very therapeutic as well. Going through some shared trauma together really gave us the opportunity to truly put our hearts on our sleeves. It’s about dealing with grief, and not overcoming it, but continuing with your life after a traumatic event. Simon: Especially in songs, I don’t think many people talk about the other side of [grief]. It’s something I’ve very much tried to put into this EP. Life does go on. Some of it is written in a very raw way, with some very dark moments. But the message is that there is hope, and you do move through it. You never forget, and you never forget the people that you’ve lost, but they become part of you. It’s definitely not a kind of doom and gloom, but instead embracing it and moving through it. These sad songs that we have are laced with hope, strength in community, and moving through it. But it’s still a bit of a party album. ### What is your favourite song from your upcoming EP? Simon: I think **Stray from the Sociopath** is a party banger. We played that at Download and that one went OFF. It was the greatest of roadtesting! Ian: I think **Right Back Down** is the more fun and silly side. Simon: [**Right Back Down**] is about the horrible feeling the day after drinking, but still, every time I play it, it makes me want to drink. ### Sum up Tales of Ill Repute in one sentence! Simon: It’s all about riffs and feels; it’s the full spectrum of a party. Ian: Deep, meaningful chats in the kitchen. That’s it. ### What direction do you see RXTPRS heading overall? Simon: We’re going in every direction, throwing all of the shit at the wall. Ian: It’s the way we’ve always been, though. It’s a blessing and a curse in many ways. We’re either the heaviest band on the lineup, or the lightest band on the lineup, but we hold our own regardless. Simon: We’re writing mainly for ourselves, and hopefully there are people that feel the same. * * * Tales of Ill Repute will be released on November 20th. Give RXPTRS a listen now: Give them a follow on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Bandcamp.

Checking Out the Dark Side of the Sun with Tristan Sheedlo: Carving the Way in Chicago’s Nu-Grunge Scene.
I’ve interviewed a few bands in the Nu-Grunge wave so far, and they are deep in the sludge of this dark and gritty sonic signature. These bands are embracing the emotion-laden voice of ’90s rock while also infusing new energy and their own sound and style, coming straight from the atmosphere of today. **Dark Sun** is a hard rock band out of Chicago that has been folded into the Nu-Grunge genre since 2017. They released their first self-titled demo compilation in 2021, and their EP "Spine" in 2022. Over the years, they released a string of singles, including some very cool “Gothic Country” versions with Folk Americana band Pawns or Kings. Their latest single, “Giving In” is available now. I love the genre-bending creative freedom in rock music. I remember loving the bluesy, soulful elements in some of the tracks the Temple of the Dog record and on albums like SAP by Alice in Chains. I got to sit down with the lead singer and guitarist of Dark Sun to hear about how his band has been keeping the grunge rock sound alive (even before the revival) as the “old guys”, the challenges of being a musician in the world of social media, and how Dark Sun is helping carve a way forward. **Tristan Sheedlo:** “We did a couple versions of our songs with a band called Pawns or Kings, and they're like a folk Americana band so we kind of strip the songs down with them. And we're gonna release another couple of singles in the winter.” ### MSM: “That’s really cool! It can be tricky to start to experiment and change your sound after you have a bigger fanbase. It seems like artists get a lot of push-back for that. But if you do it early on…” Sheedlo: “They can’t call us sellouts! It’s sellout insurance.” (laughs) Interviewing Tristan felt like I was talking to a friend right away. It probably helped that we both had some technical difficulties trying to get online, so we came into the interview from a shared experience. But it was also because of his funny, laidback attitude and what seemed to be a genuine openness. He is an easy person to talk to and laugh with. “Where did you hear about us?” Tristan started us off. I shared with him that I found **Dark Sun** on social media and was interested in exploring the 90’s rock revival in the Midwest. We talked about some of the other rock bands coming out if the region and the role of social media in music exposure. He told me that the band posts content all the time, and it’s hard to know how much reach they get. Sheedlo: "When we first started, it was like, you gotta have 20,000 monthly listeners and 10,000 Instagram followers. And then it was 20,000 followers on Instagram, 50,000 monthly listeners. Every time we hit a goal, the goalpost moves." > Then when it was Luke's 21st birthday show for like the fourth year in a row... it just became the running joke. ### MSM: “How did Dark Sun get together” Sheedlo: "We started in 2017, me and my brother started the band. We've gone through a couple different lineup changes with bass players and rhythm guitar players, but it's always been my brother and I. My brother's the drummer. Having a consistent drummer, that's like 90 percent of the battle." ### MSM: “How did you first get into playing music?” “I started playing guitar when I was probably 10 or 12 years old. We grew up playing in church, so we were used to playing live. We've always kind of had that 90s sound. That's what we grew up listening to was 90s rock and then also 90s country.” ### MSM: “And then from church to rock and roll, did that happen?” Sheedlo: ”It was just when we were old enough to play in bars. I think when we started, Luke was 16, so he was lying about his age. I think they just looked the other way. Then when it was Luke's 21st birthday show for like the fourth year in a row... it just became the running joke." (Laughs) This explains the brothers’ tight musical relationship. They started playing together young and found the hard, dark style of bands like Alice in Chains and identified with the sound, the emotion, and the message. There were a couple of decades after the hard rock scene fell out of favor with the majority of listeners that other genres took over. I am always impressed when I hear artists talk about pushing through adversity with their music and going through periods when they weren’t appreciated, staying committed to the style they believe in, and continuing to refine and improve. Sheedlo: "We've always kind of had that 90s sound. That's what we grew up listening to: 90s rock and then also 90s country. We were made fun of for sounding kind of grungy, because that was, like, prime metalcore days. I'm almost 30... so we're like the old ones now. Honestly, it's hard to do that in a world where it's not accepted, you know, at the time.” We talked about writing and recording the music. Then releasing music on social media, making music videos, and releasing content, then trying to get it out there to the people who are now coming back to hard rock. Tristan told me how hard it is to gauge how the responses online translate to people coming to see a live show. ### MSM: “Are there any songs that were particularly tough to write?” Sheedlo: “They were all pretty difficult to write. I spent a lot of time, you know, trying to make it good. I am not one of those guys who can write a song in five minutes.” Dark Sun plays locally in Chicago and surrounding areas, and sometimes turnout isn’t great, even if the music is getting attention on social media. I asked him about trying to tour in other areas and finding bands to tour with. ### MSM: Are there any bands you really want to tour with? “We’ll play with anyone!” he laughed. "We'll just keep going, keep pushing it. We'll book our own shows if we have to and headline it ourselves. To be able to do that. That seems to be like the final frontier.” ### MSM: Is there anything else that you want people to know about your band? Sheedlo: “Check us out, join our mailing list, and tell your friends. That’s really it.” (Laughs) “Thanks for talking to me.” ### MSM: “Absolutely! Hopefully we can do it again.” **Dark Sun** is forging a path, balancing genre revival, and maintaining their authenticity. I was definitely impressed by passion and fire behind this band and I'm excited to follow them and see what comes next! Note: This interview was edited for length and clarity. Dark Sun IG

There's no better band to aggressively point fingers at, and Charlotte got a taste of it live last Sunday!

The Story So Far's Unforgettable Fall Tour in Charlotte, NC
The year is 2007. A housing market crash looms on the horizon; Steve Jobs has just unveiled the iPhone; and the pop-punk scene across the United States has been steadily declining as over-commercialization hollows out the genre. After the genre’s major success across the 90s and early 2000s, interest began to fade as the public moved on in search of something new and more pop-focused. But unbeknownst to the world, five teenage kids from Walnut Creek, California, formed a band named after a New Found Glory song, released a five-song EP, and started their journey to put the “punk” back into “pop-punk.” Now, five albums and almost twenty years of aggressive finger-pointing later, they’re still kicking - and this past Sunday showed Charlotte exactly why their name is immortalized in rock history. * * * As someone who practically lives and breathes punk music, calling this band my number one of all time is a complete understatement. I discovered them in early 2012 through a gaming YouTube video that captivated my friends and me during our school lunch break for weeks on end. It was just after their first record, _Under Soil and Dirt_ , and hearing “States and Minds” for the first time gave me goosebumps like nothing ever had before. Without a doubt, I was hooked. The crazy riffs, distorted tones, and aggressive shouting from frontman **Parker Cannon** , a kid not much older than me, scratched an itch in my brain I didn't even know I had. Year after year, after replaying their music countless times, I still come back without an ounce of boredom. A decade and a half later, I finally had the honor of witnessing them play from the photo pit at one of the wildest sold-out shows I've ever seen. (From left to right) Parker Cannon, Ryan Torf, Will Levy, Kevin Geyer, Nik Bruzzese, Ross Traver **The Story So Far** brought **The Starting Line** and **Ultra Q** to kick off the night, and then took the stage to rock The Fillmore to its core. Unsurprisingly, the moment “The Glass” began to play, mosh pits broke out, crowdsurfers went up, and chaos ensued. “Out of It” blared through the speakers next, bringing even more mayhem with it. Someone had already lost a shoe, and security was getting ready to call for backup to help fans down from the barricade. Between the crazy stage lights and the band playing all across the stage, the energy was so infectious even Parker himself was moving around! He's been very stationary on stage with The Story So Far for the past few years to the point that people joke about it, so this was a very pleasant surprise! @kyle.artgraphy With this only being the fourth night of the tour, TSSF was full of energy and Parker’s vocals were pristine. He thanked the crowd with all his heart during the first interlude, and though nonchalant, he moved mountains with every word he spoke. He wants a circle pit? There'd be one. He wants everyone to jump? No questions asked, the whole venue got their feet off the ground. For a bunch of rowdy adults, they're all pretty good listeners. So good, in fact, that I could hardly wait to finish my photography and jump into the crowd myself - something I rarely do when I'm shooting a show. It looked THAT enticing from the outside. @kyle.artgraphy The transitions from heavier songs to softer songs were smooth as butter, but the crowd’s energy never once dwindled, with every track packing a punch. As I entered the pit for the show's second half to get in on the action, it took nearly an entire song to work my way to the circle pit during “Mock.” And right afterwards, I went up and crowdsurfed to my personal favorite track, “High Regard,” and promptly got kicked in the face and the groin as I was being not-so-gracefully carried to the barricade. Absolutely worth it. I can't accurately describe how insane the pit was, and I'm sure everyone who was there with me would agree. Most of the fans in the middle of the crowd were basically as close as someone can get to being inside an automatic clothes dryer, but it was so much fun you'd almost forget about all the limbs hitting your torso. Parker usually doesn't sing covers at his shows, but this tour was special in a solemn way. Just a month ago, Chad Gilbert, lead guitarist and founding member of New Found Glory, had passed away after a long battle with cancer. **The Story So Far** , as we know them, wouldn't exist without him and the rest of NFG, and in tribute, played “Vegas” in his honor. After a few more songs, the band brought the energy down once more as the show neared its conclusion, deciding this night wouldn't end without making the audience cry. @kyle.artgraphy Anyone in the crowd could tell that most of the fans there have a deep personal connection with **The Story So Far**. Their music is refreshingly relatable, with albums centered around heartbreak, loss, addiction, burnout, and everything that comes with them. Each album brought with it a different theme, but still hits home for millions of listeners thanks to Parker’s masterful writing about his own experiences. As a fan of nearly fifteen years, the band has gotten me through breakups and mental struggles, and most recently, the sudden loss of my mother earlier this year. She was someone I looked up to and admired dearly, and who encouraged me to follow my calling as an artist. I wouldn't be here doing what I love without her. While I _Want to Disappear_ isn't the band’s most popular album by a long shot, it's Parker’s most vulnerable work to date as he recounts his father’s battle with cancer and his passing. This record played a massive part in coping with this year’s tragic loss for me, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't bawl my eyes out multiple times throughout the night, especially at the end. For the last two tracks of the night, the band played “White Shores” into “Clairvoyant” for back-to-back emotional damage. Parker has mentioned how deeply personal these two songs are to him, and it shows even on the stage. I wiped away tears midway through each song and looked into the crowd to see dozens more doing the same. As sad as it was, there was comfort in knowing none of us were alone in the struggles we've been through that brought us all here together. The lights dimmed over the crowd as “Clairvoyant” ended, and TSSF exited the stage… but not for long. The setlist still had a massive “???” written in big, bold letters - almost like a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled. Out of the three previous shows on this tour, two had ended with Quicksand, and the other with Nerve. Whether by a coin flip or just how the band was feeling, Nerve was chosen to close out this epic night with what can only be described as a war zone on the floor. Everyone knew it was their last chance to mosh or crowdsurf, and their enthusiasm put a massive smile on Parker’s face as he held his hands high in celebration. @kyle.artgraphy Two weeks remain for this tour across the USA, and if the rest of it’s anything like this night, fans better be prepared. And the best part is, The Story So Far officially has a new album in the works after announcements at Sonic Temple and their Europe tour this past summer. With the massive gap between _Proper Dose_ and _I Want to Disappear_ , a potential 2027 release has me in high hopes. There will almost definitely be another tour to accompany its release, so if you missed out on this one, you’ve got another chance! #### Setlist (via Setlist.fm) 1. The Glass 2. Out of It 3. HELP! We Can't Stop Listening to Pretty Pity's Latest Single!
On October 16th, **Pretty Pity** released their latest single into the pop-rock scene. The new single, "HELP," is an anthem for all of the stubborn independent people who refuse to ask for that "H-word" in the title. Pretty Pity is a pop-rock band whose rebrand kicked off their new era around 2025. The band is made up of **Tani Jade** (vocals), **David Kislik** (lead guitar), **Alex Gonzalez** (bass), **Billy De Guzman** (rhythm guitar), and **Hernando Torrealba** (drums). Following a stretch of live summer performances that include playing at Orlando's _Summer School_ _Tour_ and _Summerfest_ , plus a supporting set for **Royale Lynn** 's tour, Pretty Pity has already proven that they are no stranger to the live music scene. * * * This single is self-aware at its core while also carrying the steady pop-rock sounds that keep you moving. Being one of the band's most genuine and personal songs, this sets the bar high for future releases. It is immediately being added to my "Stressed...But Music Helps" playlist for those particularly frustrating days. As usual, one of my favorite aspects of this song is the lyrics. They come off as a bit sarcastic (it comes with the frustration and avoidance tendencies), which also makes them more relatable. The lyrics perfectly describe that moment of knowing what we should be doing for our own good and then choosing to do the exact opposite. Some of my favorite lines from this song will be living rent-free in my head. The anxiety-packed lyric, "_Life is a bitch, I know// baby let me breathe// can we take it slow?_ " is a familiar plea for many of us when dealing with stress. The verse "_Full of hope, but my hands are tied// think about it less when I// get loud, get rude, get more tattoos_ " is the perfect representation of popular coping mechanisms that many of us prefer instead of facing issues head-on. This song is full of mantras for the stressed but stubborn person that we either are or know. Whether you're here for a deep dive into the lyrics, to become more self-aware of your own mental health and coping tendencies, or just to dance along...this song will definitely be playing on repeat for awhile. If you're looking for more Pretty Pity, be sure to catch them at one of their shows in November, or on their 10-date run supporting **Youth Fountain** in February 2027. * * * Poster Courtesy of: Cupid Theory PR ❣️ ****Keep up with Pretty Pity**** : Instagram // Spotify // YouTube // TikTok

On October 13th, Mortez released their single "CHAINZ," a resistance song, and on October 12th, they released their theatrical masterpiece of a music video to accompany their single "Reaper," which came out earlier this summer.

Mortez Releases New Single "CHAINZ" and Takes On A New Vibe With Their Music Video for "Reaper"
From Nevada, Las Vegas, pop-rock duo **Mortez** is rising from the desert sands and into the spotlight. Their sound is a mix of pop thickly threaded into the fabric of alt-rock. Vocalist **Rachele Royale's** voice is a powerhouse that keeps you pulled in while **Brett Daniels'** guitar playing guides you on a journey that keeps you guessing and waiting for what the duo will do next! On the 13th of October, **Mortez** released their new single, "_CHAINZ._ " * * * "CHAINZ" Single Cover Art * * * "_CHAINZ_ " may have a circus vibe to the aesthetic, but at its core it's a resistance song. With a strong hook of _"Tie me up in chains / Well you know you got me caught up in these chains / Come and get me locked up in your chains / No you don't own me, I'mma break these chains"_ for the chorus of this track announces its purpose as well as makes it sound like a fun alt-rock jam. This, alongside the aesthetic for the visuals of this song, cements it as a revolution song to light your Molotovs to. This song is a full-on experience, as you may not expect the circus-style visuals to go with the track at first listen and then see them, but it rounds out the overall brand and makes you want to explore more of what they have going on. This visual concept continues from their single "_Reaper_ " that came out on July 10th. * * * * * * Speaking of "_Reaper_ ", while the single came out earlier in the summer, they just released their banger music video for the track. So, let's dissect the music video, shall we? It starts with a twirling black-and-white umbrella and the track name, then cuts to a pair of black platform stilettos and a woman's legs walking down what seems to be a church aisle, with a mesh black veil hanging in the camera view and the head of a small bouquet of black roses. Short clips of a woman, covered in a thick red veil, pointing at us as she watches alternate with the woman in black heels making her way down the aisle. Suddenly, the scene changes, and we have Rachele as Freya emerge from the shadows; the lights cut on as she performs between two black-and-white umbrellas similar to the one in the beginning. After that, we get a mashup of Rachele as "Freya" and Brett as "Reaper," alternating between white lighting and red lighting as dancers pull out full choreography alongside Rachele. Finally, we meet the red-and-black bride as Reaper, and she dances around the stage surrounded by dancers and contortionists who dance and twist around them as they dance together now in a grand gesture of struggle and romance. This video is fun and has a gritty, home-filmed vibe without it actually seeming low quality, which I personally love! With a mix of more performance-style clips and story-based theatrics, this video is one you can simply enjoy and watch again and again. * * * Photo Credit: Victor Hughes * * * **Mortez** is a fun find for me! I love the circus themes on the new singles, but even their normal rockers aesthetic is compelling and shows that they can adapt to new styles with ease. Both tracks are ones you can jam over and over, but still hold deeper meaning. I am excited to see and hear what **Mortez** does next and if we'll carry on the concepts from these singles as they move forward. This duo has a lot of promise, so I know they'll give us great tracks with each release! Keep your eyes on **Mortez;** don't be late to the bandwagon! * * * Photo credit: Felicia Ann-Pagliaroli Carter * * * > **Meet The Members of Mortez!** **Rachele Royale** - Vocalist **Brett Daniels** - Guitarist * * * Mortez's Instagram

"There Are Wounds That Won't Heal Over Time, And Some That Make You Wanna Die, Make You Wanna Die". - Thrown ( "Split")
musicscenemedia.com
On The Verge: Thrown Splits Greensboro, NC in Two on U.S. Tour
Marking their 10th stop on their headlining US tour, Sweden's own **Thrown** has been paving their way across the states, leaving packed venues stained with blood _(literally)_ , sweat, and rage. Signed to **Arising Empire** , the Swedish Nu-Metalcore outfit has been on a rampage as they build tension for their anticipated upcoming album, "UNWANTED," releasing November 6th, and every venue has become a stomping ground of both _extended and excessive pain_ in their wake. The tour lineup built for this tour is a combination of metal's cornerstone genres of aggression, alongside the one and only 'almighty' **Norma Jean** , deathmetal/slam band **BoltCutter** , and Germany's own metalcore outfit **Half Me.** On October 17th, Greensboro, North Carolina became the next proving ground for Thrown's purge through the states at **Hangar 1819.** Prior to doors opening, the line had started extending past the venue and into previous streets- a sea of black hoodies, patch-infused battle jackets, and adrenaline-primed eyes ready to take their fellow man into the very Earth for the bands they came to release their rage for. I fall into the last description; there's nothing more cathartic in this genre than showcasing your admiration for an artist by _assaulting and being assaulted_ by your fellow concertgoers to your left and right as they play. By the time I stood there watching the last song go off, blood pouring down my face and into my throat and down my chin, staining my clothes, I felt like I witnessed the rapture: _Everything inside was gone, and I had watched something greater than myself._ * * * ## **HALF ME** Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** Opening up the night was Hamburg, Germany's metalcore group, **Half Me**. Opening bands are the 'wake-up-call' to shows- introducing crowds of people to the loud, chaotic, and violent realm they're about to enter, exiting normal 9-5 work drone status, and flipping their settings _to something else entirely._ Being the first time hearing the band, I was amazed and quickly forgot that anything existed outside these four walls. Half Me came out armed to the teeth: high-energy pounding drums (Maximilian Eisersdorff), a rumbling and chaotic bass (Tobias Max Sajons), and hefty-toned guitar (Christopher Hesse) rampaged into our eardrums from the very first second, as vocalist Christopher Zühlke thrashed around the stage telling us to feed him movement and violence. As I stood near the front of the crowd, I looked back and saw the room had been _packed the fuck out_. Endless bodies and heads, bobbing and weaving- it wasn't too long until the band tapped into the crowd's more unhinged wiring:_the mosh pit._ The band rips in with their track, "King", with each member on stage slamming their skulls up and down from the ground to the ceiling, and as they did, the room enlarged, and the open circle in the middle was filled with hardcore dancing, moshers, and built-up rage. The friend I had arrived with came for Norma Jean, but by the time the relentless breakdown on "Built On Your Blood" was bombarding us, he had disappeared. Looking over to find him, Half Me had converted him - he had joined the violent crowd of moshers in the center of the room. This band was a phenomenal new find for me- high energy from the gate, movement, and metalcore done right. Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** * * * ## **BoltCutter** Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** After hopping to the bar to slam another _delicious Voodoo Ranger_ to my sweaty damn face, I went back to my position in the crowd to wait for the next band- before I, too, got _fucking slammed_ instantly by moshers as soon as **BoltCutter** played their first _literal damn note._ Coming out of Eugene, Oregon, the band introduces death-metal-infused slam into the crowd. As I looked up from the murderous scene of what once was my can of hydration, I could tell that BoltCutter had a cult following with them. As soon as the first song popped off, hardcore dancing and two-steps took over most of the room with disgusting, dissonant chugs (Alex Hannon and Josh Klimoski), rapid-fire drums (Kameron Tyler), and an absolute _unit_ of a vocalist __(Tristen Storm) rampaging on stage. Storm sports comical sunglasses while he walks up and down the stage, with vocals that are similar to, but not limited to: 2 bricks being rubbed together, a garbage disposal, a car crash consisting of only 1993 Dodge Rams (the ones with the 1st-gen Cummins in them that don't die), a garbage compactor, a garbage compactor filled with other garbage compactors, and tax evasion. Basically, _it's fucking nasty._ The pit was filled with newcomers, and it grew in size with each track laid down. The band, formed in 2023, quickly gained a following for their brutal display of death metal, hip-hop and meme samples, and slam's guttural atmosphere. As the sample of _"put it in reverse, Terry"_ plays, it's as hilariously and belligerently heavy as you can get with a band, with "GetFromRoundHere" consisting of no actual lyrics in its listed lyrics but rather a self-aware explanation that the music and group are as humbling and fun as they are relentless to see live. This was the first time both seeing and hearing BoltCutter, and from the cult following I witnessed come out of the woodwork from start to end, I can see why they're climbing the ladder up in the slam scene. They're fun, they're brutal, and they spare no man (or beer). Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** * * * ## **NORMA JEAN** **** Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** I trust if you're reading this, you won't need an introduction to these guys. If you do, it's unfortunate, but coming out next was 'the almighty'**Norma Jean.** The 2006 Grammy-nominated band has made a living since 1997 by being one of the most innovative and chaotic bands to roam the planet. Fans have claimed them to be in the realm of 'mathcore' and 'noise rock'- irregular time signatures, spazzy dissonant chords, with a fair mixture of metalcore-like riffs, (Jeff Hickey, Grayson Stewart, Clay Crenshaw) drumming (Matt Marquez), and abrasive harsh vocals (Cory Brandan). As they take the stage, my friend, Jordan Slaymaker, is unlike himself in the way I've ever known him. Jordan, being one of the biggest Norma Jean fans in the room, shoved his way to the front of the room- and I realized why. Norma Jean has made the show up to this point into a different kind of show in its entirety. The mosh pits are not enough now: I feel a weight pressing on my shoulder and realize _it's a damn foot._ Crowd surfers have flooded the airspace, groups of them being carried throughout the crowd, while Norma Jean stomps, parades, and ransacks their stage. The energy I sensed at this moment wasn't even tangible; it was unearthly. As I pry myself out of the mosh pit to its outer rim for a breather, I quickly catch a glimpse up at the band before I finally see my friend, whom I lost at the start of the set- and he is flying ferociously from the very stage Norma Jean was on and into the crowd: _towards my fucking direction._ Helping lower him to the ground, I (again) attempted to calm myself to take in the band that has been a cornerstone of their own marked lane in the music world. As I do, the song closes, and we proceed with the famous "Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste", and I no longer see breathing necessary, but violence will do. The crowd has peaked, bodies hammering on one another, others flying through the air. An orchestra of pain. Norma Jean laid all of Greensboro to waste. Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** * * * ## **THROWN** Photographed by MSM's ****Christy Peterson**** The show has reached such a pinnacle point, bodies have flown over the top of crowds, the pit is starting to draw blood, and the packed-out Greensboro venue on this Saturday night is filled with people waiting for their headliners: **Thrown.** The Swedish group quickly broke out as one of the most must-see aggressive acts since their 2019 formation, releasing a slew of singles for their upcoming second album, "UNWANTED." Punchy riffs fused with harmonics (Johan Liljeblad, Andreas Malm), ear hemorrhaging drums (Buster Odeholm), and signature wrath-filled vocals (Marcus Lundqvist). I bought tickets quickly when I saw they were coming to my area, and I wanted nothing more than to stomp into the pit's proving grounds and show them what I was made of. I stepped into the inner rim of the pit before hearing the hip-hop-like intro to "on the verge." As the drums and guitar bleed into the intro, I know exactly what's in store for me- and it couldn't come sooner. As soon as Lundqvist enters and releases us into the main riff, I find myself quickly in the middle of the room. Stage lights overloading, the crowd is a sea of bodies bouncing, and I'm swinging at everything that moves and breathes within 3 feet of me. Thrown has made Greensboro come to life. As I'm helping pick up those who've fallen in our homemade battlegrounds, the room tenses once more with one of their most recent tracks, "split." Even being a newer track, the crowd recognizes it instantly. Having memorized every word since its release, myself and others rotate from assaulting one another to pushing the inner rim of the pit to scream back "split my head in two," as Thrown plays tracks that sound as great live as they do on record. Along with the irony of the track, there's a rule within the mosh pit: _if you are in it, you are fair game._ As I turn around from whichever direction I was, shoving a soul into the Earth, another soul found me- seeing only a blur of knuckles, my face is on the receiving end of a haymaker. As I stumbled back, the gracious crowd-goers around me checked on me before widening their eyes. I notice I'm wet, and my face has been split open from the hit _(see? Irony),_ and I am now leaking down my face. As my friend snags me to help me get something to clean up in the bathroom, I'm leaking down onto the sink- and I can't feel anything but that I'm missing out on one of the best bands I've seen all year. Your dearest narrator, and friend/medic Jordan Slaymaker, during Thrown's track, "Split" Going back into the crowd, I hear "backfire" start up- _another favorite._ Harmonic infused riffs and pick scrapes are just hammering this crowd into the venue's foundation. "bloodsucker" and "critic" continue classic older tracks, along with the sampling of the newer bits of the upcoming album, which we can expect to hear November 6th. By the time Thrown threw everything they had onto us, it was nothing but carnage by the time the lights came on and they walked off stage. I rarely, if ever, have this feeling, but I wanted more. I could have watched them destroy that stage with every track in their discography- a Thrown show is that cathartic and fun in the flesh. Chiodos' 'It's Not You, It's Me Tour' Hit San Antonio with Hail The Sun, Emery, and Evergreen Terrace
October 14th brought another beautiful day to San Antonio, Texas, as **Chiodos** made their way to The Espee for their "It's Not You, It's Me Tour," alongside **Hail the Sun** , **Emery** , and **Evergreen Terrace**. Thankfully, the weather was much more forgiving than the last time I was here for Camp Screamo. Fans had been waiting years to catch Evergreen Terrace again, Hail the Sun had been packing venues across Texas, and after catching **Chiodos** at Louder Than Life a few weeks earlier, I was more than ready for round two. Photo by Ryan Cagle for Music Scene Media @stilltonecreative When I arrived, the line was stretching down the sidewalk. Unfortunately, my evening got off to a rocky start. I ran into issues at will call, and after already dropping $40 on parking, I was getting anxious. For a moment, I thought I'd have to turn around and head home. Thankfully, I got the green light at the last minute and made it inside just as **Evergreen Terrace** were getting into their second song. Talk about cutting it close! * * * Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1999, **Evergreen Terrace** helped shape the metalcore and melodic hardcore scene with their aggressive breakdowns, screamed vocals, and melodic hooks. They were one of the staples of hardcore music when I was growing up, so seeing them back onstage was something special. After their third song, we were allowed to continue photographing from the crowd. Now, a reasonable person might have found a safe spot away from the action. Me? I thought shooting from the outskirts of the mosh pit sounded like a fantastic idea. (Famous last words, right?) Evergreen Terrace | Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative The hardcore dancers and crowd killers were out in full force, throwing fists, swinging limbs, and apparently making blood sacrifices to their favorite hardcore band. At one point, someone came charging toward me and my camera, but thankfully, I dodged him. Unfortunately, another person wasn't so lucky when a crowd killer struck her in the nose, leaving her bleeding. It was an ugly moment and a reminder that there's a difference between going hard in the pit and intentionally hurting people. Despite the chaos, it was great seeing Evergreen Terrace back at it. They closed their set with **"No Donnie, These Men Are Nihilist"** and **"Chaney Can't Quite Riff Like Helmet's Page Hamilton."** If you haven't checked out their latest single, **"Bolt Cutter,"** do yourself a favor and give it a listen. These guys still have plenty of fight left in them! Evergreen Terrace | Photo gallery by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative FOLLOW EVERGREEN TERRACE * * * Keeping the early-2000s nostalgia alive, **Emery** were up next, bringing fan favorites and newer material to The Espee. I had recently caught them at Louder Than Life and previously covered their San Antonio headlining show celebrating the 20th anniversary of _The Question_. One thing I've always loved about **Emery** is how they blend their vocals. Between the melodies, harmonies, and screaming, there's so much happening in their music, yet everything has its place. Their lyrics can be downright poetic, and hearing those different vocal parts layered together live is something I've always appreciated. Emery | Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative Their set included "Edge of the World,"**** "Studying Politics," and "The Ponytail Parades." I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing those last two songs live. And let's talk about **Josh Head** for a second. His screams were absolutely nasty, in the best way possible. When he belted out "My eyes are open for the first time!" the power behind his voice hit hard. The band mentioned they had a long drive ahead to the next tour stop but invited fans to hang out at their merch tent before leaving. Crowd at The Espee turning up | Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative "You guys want to party?" **Toby Morrell** asked. The drums kicked in, and "The Party Song" was underway. Fans were dancing, shouting along, and having the time of their lives. Different parts of the crowd sang back their favorite lines, and I couldn't help but join in. The elder emo in me was thriving! I grew up listening to **Emery** on my iPod while walking to school and back home, never imagining I'd still be watching them perform all these years later. They wrapped things up with "Walls," as crowd surfers made their way overhead, giving **Emery** one last burst of energy. And with that, another band from my teenage emo phase playlist (just kidding, it's not a phase) had officially made my night. Emery | Photo gallery by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative FOLLOW EMERY * * * While waiting for **Hail the Sun** , Queen's **"Bohemian Rhapsody"** came on, and one of the security guards started pretending he was conducting a choir. He'd point to different sections of the crowd for their parts before getting everyone singing together. I'm not sure what was funnier, watching him take his new job as choir director so seriously or seeing everyone actually follow along. Hail the Sun | Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative It's no secret that **Hail the Sun** are beloved in San Antonio. From their early days at The White Rabbit to bringing Kill Iconic Fest to the city, they've built quite the relationship with the local music scene. Whenever they're playing within a 100-mile radius of me, you can pretty much count on seeing me there. "San Antonio, it feels like we're home," vocalist **Donovan Melero** told the crowd before kicking things off with "Maladapted." Donovan spun around with his microphone stand, tossing the mic into the air and catching it effortlessly. Meanwhile, drummer **Allen Casillas** was going to town behind the kit. They continued with "War Crimes," and Donovan ended the song screaming, "Cut. Turn. Fade. Back." He then addressed the crowd. _"Our hearts go out to the thousands of Palestinian children who are murdered every day."_ After a brief pause, he screamed, _"God, are you listening?"_ before launching into "Falling on Deaf Ears." Friends and couples had their arms around each other, singing every word, while crowd surfers kept coming toward the stage. Security barely had time to catch one person before another was on their way. Hail the Sun| Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative **Hail the Sun** kept moving with "Made Your Mark," "The Drooling Class," "Missed Injections," and "Relapse Is a Love Affair." The first and last are two of my personal favorites, so hearing both in one set was a treat. Then came "I Can Tell By the Scars," a song I was particularly excited to hear. Before performing it, Donovan shared something special. "_My goodness, San Antonio, it feels like we're home. We released an album in the last year called 'cut. turn. fade. back.' And I wrote lyrics to this song especially inspired by San Antonio, Texas._ " He reminisced about their early touring days, packing into a van and trailer and driving out of San Antonio at dawn after some of the best shows of their early career. Finding out our city inspired one of my favorite songs made me appreciate it even more. As the set wound down, he thanked Twin Productions for booking the band in San Antonio over the past twelve years and gave a shoutout to their friend Joe from Ice Nine Kills, who was filling in on bass. _"Thank you truly for your love, San Antonio, Texas. We have two more songs. I think I should just move here."_ I don't think anyone would've complained! The band slowed things down with "Relax / Divide," giving everyone a chance to sing along before finishing strong with "Human Target Practice." I've caught **Hail the Sun** plenty of times, but they always give me another reason to come back. Hail the Sun | Photo gallery by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative FOLLOW HAIL THE SUN * * * Finally, it was time for **Chiodos**. They wasted no time getting into "TAPDAT" and "There's No Penguins in Alaska," bringing out that chaotic, theatrical sound that made so many of us fall in love with them in the first place. Between the high-pitched vocals, screaming, and heavy breakdowns, **Craig Owens** sounded better than ever. Before one of the breakdowns in "There's No Penguins in Alaska," Craig had a request. _"I usually ask everyone to get down for this song, but I see you all going nuts out here. I want to see all of you jump. San Antonio, turn the **** up right now!"_ And when that breakdown hit, people were jumping, throwing their hands up, and screaming along. The band continued with "No Hardcore Dancing in the Living Room," keeping the nostalgia going with a setlist packed with fan favorites. Craig took a moment to thank **Hail the Sun, Emery,** and**Evergreen Terrace** before announcing their last deep cut, "One Day Women Will All Become Monsters." "Are you all ready for some bangers?" he asked. As if we weren't already getting enough of them! Chiodos | Photo by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative They launched into "The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined," and hearing thousands of fans shouting along was something else. Looking across the crowd, people had their hands in the air, jumping and singing songs they'd probably spent years blasting through their headphones. Now here we were, still screaming along like no time had passed. With the end approaching, Craig had one more question. _"How many of y'all have work tomorrow?"_ Before anyone could worry about their morning alarms, he shouted, _"Fuck that shit! Give me your energy right now!"_ I mean, he had a point. Tomorrow's problems could wait a few more songs. **Chiodos** closed their set with "Bulls Make Money, Bears Make Money, Pigs Get Slaughtered" and "Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on the Creek." What a way to finish the night! Two songs that have been part of the band's history for years, and here we were in 2026, still singing along. Chiodos | Photo gallery by Ryan Cagle @stilltonecreative * * * Looking back, this lineup was something special. **Evergreen Terrace** brought the hardcore chaos, **Emery** gave us plenty of reasons to embrace our inner elder emo, **Hail the Sun** reminded everyone why San Antonio feels like a second home, and **Chiodos** closed things out with songs that helped define an entire era of post-hardcore music. From nearly missing the show entirely to singing along to music I've carried with me for years, this was one of those nights that made every bit of stress getting through the doors worth it. **Chiodos** ' "It's Not You, It's Me Tour," concluded this month, however if you ever get the chance to check out them out live, I highly recommend it! Until then, check out their new song "TAPDAT" on all streaming platforms! FOLLOW CHIODOS WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK | SPOTIFY | APPLE MUSIC * * * More photos of Chiodos below!

Tempe, Arizona band No Halos released their newest single "Broken Muse" on September 25th, and it is the perfect bittersweet yearning song for your day-to-day or your While-I-Read playlists!

Melodic Metalcore Band No Halos' Newest Single Is A Bittersweet Love Song
**No Halos** is a melodic metalcore band from Tempe, Arizona, whose music focuses heavily on mental health and healing. Their sound is very clean in production style, and the side of metalcore that it leans into makes them a band that is accessible to people who don't like the harshness 24/7 but still want that well-placed brutality. On the 25th of September, No Halos released their newest single "Broken Muse _,_ " which hits like an established large-scale band's song already! * * * "Broken Muse" Single Cover Art * * * This track is smooth and definitely hits the melodic vibes to a T. Staying true to the focus on mental health that is a running theme across their works, "Broken Muse" is heavily based on the same topic... But it sounds like a love or yearning song, though a bittersweet one, with lyrics like "_We can make a perfect harmony / Out of broken chords and misery / You lift me higher, then you tear me apart / A symphony of chaos beats in our heart_ ". The clean vocals are smooth and angelic, with the explosive contrast of the harshes to come in and remind us that this band is, in fact, a metalcore band. The added echo effects on the cleans and guitar riffs that alternate from softer to heavy add depth to the track that makes it even more engaging. * * * * * * This single comes with a well-shot music video, as if the song itself isn't enough! The music video starts with walking into a navy-blue veiled room, with spotlights zooming around the room behind them as they start to play the song in a performance-type music video vibe. As they play, the lighting changes from blue to white overhead and strobing white lights. But the chorus is really where this song slams in, as the lyrics pop up in bold lettering behind the band members as they play through the lines. This is a video concept that I really love because I do greatly enjoy performance-style videos, and having the lyrics come banging in with the band on the chorus was such a fun watch! This song would be phenomenal in a romance movie, like in a scene where the two main characters finally realize that they love each other, or when they realize that they never fell out of love, or even in the playlist that more and more books are coming with, especially in the romance genre. * * * * * * "Broken Muse" is a solid track all the way around that is right at the quality of other songs released by the well-established bands in the regional ranks, so I am waiting to see these guys really take off towards the top! No Halos has a sound that is going to take them a really long way! I can't wait to hear and see what they do next, because I already know that this is a band where I can expect the next release to blow the rest out of the water, yet still all be songs that can be played on repeat as well. * * * > **Meet The Band!** **Dylan Neuman** - Vocalist **Zach Couch** - Guitarist **Michael Gibney** - Guitarist **Luis Peralta** - Bassist and Vocalist **Reuben Dorus** - Drums * * * No Halo's Instagram No Halo's Merch Site

”Can I get a McHenry With cheese?”

CKY Live at The Vixen: What the Fans Want
**CKY** made their way to the vixen in McHenry, Illinois, Friday night, bringing plenty of nostalgia, heavy riffs, and a good amount of humor along with them. It wasn’t about hearing old songs when you were a teenager again. This was more of a personal experience that the crowd got to have with the members of **CKY**. The night started off with the bad excuses; their sound honestly reminded me of sex Bob-Omb from the Scott Pilgrim Versus The World movie, and I mean that in the best way possible. They had great energy, constantly messing with each other and even throwing merch into the crowd, which was a pretty entertaining way to get things started and prepare everyone for CKY. When they got on stage, everyone left the bar and went into the crowd. The band is currently performing as just two members, **Chad Ginsburg** on guitar and **Jess Margera** on drums. It’s definitely a different setup from what longtime fans might remember, but they still sounded like **CKY**. And the lineup didn’t seem to bother the crowd one bit; even they joked about it themselves, saying, "We're like The White Stripes.” One thing I did not expect was just how much the band would interact with everyone throughout the night. People kept shouting song requests after Chad had asked them to, and he would play a quick riff from each song. It was very fun to see them having a kind of back-and-forth with the audience. At one point, they actually gave the crowd three songs to choose from, and everyone was pretty set on hearing "Knee Deep." The band mentioned they haven't performed that song in a while. It was better for the fans who were asking for it. There was plenty of joking around between songs. **CKY** admitted they’ve never even heard of McHenry before coming to the town, which somehow turned into a joke about McDonald’s. Margera eventually asked, "Can I get a McHenry with cheese?" It was the kind of dumb humor you would expect from the guys of **CKY**. Speaking of their humor, anyone who grew up watching the original CKY videos probably remembers Brandon DiCamillo and his Chinese freestyle rap. Well, **CKY** decided to bring a fan onstage to give it a shot. Unfortunately, the guy didn’t seem to remember nearly as much of the rap as he thought he did. He managed to get some of the lyrics out before struggling through the rest. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty awkward to watch. But at the same time, seeing the band bring back something from their early CKY days (my childhood) was funny. I recorded it to send to my friends, and it was so cringe. I couldn’t do it. The crowd was usually fun too; one lady kept bothering me to try and give Jess a beer as I was in front of the barricade. She really tried flagging him and the crew down. I don’t know if she ever gave it to him. You could tell the people who showed up were genuinely excited to see **CKY**. One fan was apparently so determined to get close to **Jess Margera** that they managed to hide behind the barricade, but security eventually kicked them out. The band didn’t seem particularly bothered by it, but it was definitely something I wasn’t expecting to see. Of course, the music was still the main reason everyone was there. The songs still had that familiar **CKY** sound, even if the lineup change was different. What I liked best about the show was it didn’t seem too rehearsed. They were comfortable enough to joke around, entertain random fan requests, and let things get a little weird once in a while. There were a few hiccups along the way, most notably the freestyle attempt, but that’s all part of the fun. It was a real pleasure seeing a band with this much history still enjoying themselves and having fun with the people who came out to support them. **CKY** might not have the same lineup they did years ago, but Friday night’s crowd made one thing pretty obvious: people still love these songs, and they’re more than happy to get loud when they hear them. This show concluded their October tour run until they get back on the road on November 5th to play shows across Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois! 5 Songs I'd Recommend: * Flesh into Gear * Escape from Hellview * Close But Far * 96 Quite Bitter Beings * Sink into the underground FOLLOW ****CKY**** WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK | APPLE MUSIC | SPOTIFY

Igorrr Stuns Charlotte With Their Captivating Performance
On Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, **Igorrr** from France brought their North American tour to Charlotte, North Carolina. The performance took place at The Fillmore Underground. On tour with **Igorrr** were **Violent Magic Orchestra** (VMO) and **Secret Chiefs 3**. * * * ## VIOLENT MAGIC ORCHESTRA First to take the stage was **VMO** , hailing from Osaka, Japan. This act is an experimental black metal band with electronic elements added in. Personally, I hadn't heard of this act prior to this tour announcement, so I was not too sure what to expect from them. However, I was pleasantly surprised by their explosive energy and highly energetic performance. This performance was possibly the closest to a rave that I have ever experienced. The electronic elements from this act make them a great fit to tour with Igorrr. Despite it being a Tuesday evening, they had the crowd moving for their whole set. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves! The set averaged about 30 minutes, and it felt like it flew by. Just as quickly as they had hopped on the stage, they were gone. The performance was shocking, exciting, and engrossing. This was definitely a performance I will remember for a long time! * * * ## SECRET CHIEFS 3 Next to take the stage was **Secret Chiefs 3** , from San Francisco, California. Secret Chiefs 3 is an experimental rock band started by guitarist Trey Spruance. This was the complete opposite side of experimental from **VMO** , but it definitely gave the crowd some time to cool down after the explosion of energy they had just experienced. The musicians in this band are very talented, and each song had technical elements to them, despite it being more of a rock vibe than a metal vibe. A lot of the songs had a Persian sound to them too, which seemed to be a defining feature in a lot of the material. After seeing both **VMO** and **Secret Chiefs 3** , it was very clear as to why they were both touring with **Igorrr**. **Igorrr** 's sound is like a combined version of both bands, and it was nice to see such a nicely designed lineup for the headliner. * * * ## IGORRR After a long intermission between bands, **Igorrr** took the stage at 9:30 PM. **Igorrr** is the stage name of French musician Gautier Serre, but it has now developed into a group performance. The compositions put together by Serre are eclectic and genre-blended with metal, rock, electronic, and classical sounds. I have seen **Igorrr** perform before but was genuinely blown away by how much the performance has been elevated. I thought it was amazing before, but now!? This was honestly one of the most captivating and entertaining performances I have seen all year, both visually and audibly! This tour was the first time that vocalist **Gerda Iguchi** has joined **Igorrr** in North America. Her voice was breathtaking! She performed the operatic vocals we all know and love from these **Igorrr** songs with ease, and she was so fun to watch on stage- this woman was born for this performance! I can't imagine seeing anyone else perform this material quite like she is at this point in time. The set was approximately an hour and a half long and had an incredible mix of older and newer material. Some of the songs they performed included "Daemoni," "Nervous Waltz," "Downgrade Desert," "Headbutt," and "Himalaya Massive Ritual." In particular, Gerda Iguchi's rendition of "Silence" will be permanently ingrained in my brain as one of the most beautiful performances I have ever seen. Even after an hour and a half of playing, it was still sad to see the show end. However, they did perform three encore songs that included "Very Noise," "Camel Dancefloor," and "Opus Brain," all of which were performed perfectly. I left the venue hoping that **Igorrr** would return to North America again very soon. * * * Igorrr's North American tour is coming to an end in a few days, on October 20th; however, they just announced their next tour in early 2027 through Europe with **Secret Chiefs 3** and **Fange**! If you want to get a little experimental too, check out Igorrr's recent 2025 album, "Amen," below:

Shattered Windows and Shattered Expectations: A Look at Skorts' New Single "Bad Habit"
Last night I was chilling in the weird industrial part of the south side of downtown Indy. This area is a hellscape made up of crumbling smokestacks, empty gravel lots, and abandoned factories. I’m hanging out outside one of these abandoned factories with my homeboy Lou; we’re crushing 40s and sending fist-sized chunks of gravel through the massive factory windows with our trusty baseball bat. I step up to bat, feet spread wide, hands dusted for extra grip, earbuds in, playing demos and yet unreleased songs from my inbox, when something comes on that causes me to lose focus and my grip, sending the bat flying right through the windshield of an old delivery truck. I guess the truck battery still had a little juice in it because the alarm started blaring, and before you know it, Lou and I are tearing ass out of there as several cop cars pull up to see what the fuss was about. You may be thinking that that was a pretty big mistake I made over a song, and to that, good sir, madam, or they, I say, shut up. You may not be so quick to judge once you find out that that song was the new Skorts single “Bad Habit.” Photo: Press Shot taken by Lindsey Alexis Skorts may just be the best up-and-coming band I’ve stumbled upon this year. When I first came across their album “Incompletement,” it ruled my stereo for months, as I’m certain it did yours. These New York City-based rockers have a unique blend of alt and punk, of soft and sharp, of honey and cyanide, that quite simply drives me up the fucking wall. What we have here is a bit different, though. We know that Skorts can rock a gentle ballad just as well as they can an explosive punk track. Look no further than “Steal the Night” for evidence of this. “Bad Habit,” however, takes things a step further than anything we’ve heard from the band thus far. The song is a back-and-forth between growling guitars, mellow beats, gentle garage-rock-inspired riffs, and bewitching vocals. Alli Walls, ladies, gentlemen, and everything in between, has the voice of a siren. Hypnotic does not even begin to cover it. It’s intoxicating, like a fat rip off a canister of whippets; it hits your head in seconds, and you’re swimming in a dreamy bliss that consumes your very soul. Backed up by the unparalleled guitar stylings of Char Smith, the funky bass lines provided by Emma Welch, and the beats—good Lord, the beats—which are laid down by Max Berdik and you have a lineup that makes something more than a band; you have a pantheon of musical Gods. Photo: Press Shot of Skorts from the Skorts Website You can find “Bad Habit” streaming everywhere today. I’d tell you to stream it at your earliest convenience, but best be that you wait until you have nowhere to be for a few hours. Once you hear the track, you won’t be able to do anything but listen to it on repeat for the rest of the day. If that isn’t enough for you, then you’re in luck, as “Bad Habit” is a teaser track for the band’s upcoming EP “Muse and the Marquee.” The EP is out November 13th, so mark your calendars, people; this is not a drill. I’ll be patiently awaiting the release, with a pen in one hand and a baseball bat in the other, ready to review it. And I promise I won’t break any windshields this time, unless, of course, I really super want to.

What Oceans Couldn't Crush: A Review of the new Save Us album "Death to Something"
Yesterday I was chilling on the corner of Broad Ripple Avenue, watching the cars zip past and treating myself to a bottle of port. So, I’m sitting there tucked into a little alcove that leads into a pizza shop when this dude goes riding by shirtless on a unicycle. This guy is out on the streets of Broad Ripple cruising around on his unicycle frequently, but it always catches my attention when I see him. Where is he going, and why is he using the worst mode of transportation on the planet to get there? I wasn’t the only one asking myself such questions. As a Honda drove past Mr. Unicycle, the operator craned his neck back to watch my man ride and completely missed the oncoming telephone pole, which he then wrapped his sedan around. I sprang into action, spilling my wine in the process—just terrible. I ran over to the wrecked car and leaned in, ripping the guy’s phone from the heap of scrap. Dude had some good taste in music, despite his poor driving skills, and I just had to know what that was playing over his stereo. It turned out to be the recently released single “Cry” by the one and only Save Us. I stood there a moment grooving to the tune when the sound of approaching sirens prompted me to beat it. As I’m running down a back alley towards the pad, one thought persisted in my head: isn’t the new “Save Us” album coming out in a few days? And what do you know? Another swing and another hit for old Dusty turns out I haven’t fried my brain just yet. That new album, “Death to Something,” was due to drop in just a couple days, but I didn’t have to wait that long; I already had it. Photo: "Death to Something" Album Cover _But who is Save Us?_ I’m getting to that; relax. Save Us is the alternative-metal powerhouse; think of something between Bring Me the Horizon and Asking Alexandria, from, uh, well, that part’s complicated. See Save Us vocalist Miguel Owls, who hails from sunny California, where he once spent his days posting his music, mostly covers, on TikTok. One day, UK-based musicians Chris Biddiscombe and Benji Havercroft came across one of his covers. They were so enthralled that Biddiscombe sent Owls a message; that one message bloomed into a series of long-distance jam sessions, which resulted in the band’s first EP, “Lucid.” This record netted the trio millions of streams, cementing Save Us as an alt-metal icon, scoring them a record deal, and prompting Owls to take a trip to England to do some in-person work with his bandmates. Jump forward about three years to today, and the band is finally about to drop their debut album, that’s “Death to Something.” The album consists of twelve songs, six of which we have already heard on the EP “Last Of Me,” which was released earlier this year. That means we have six more brand-new tunes coming our way, and thanks to the previously released tracks, you probably have a decent idea of what's in store for us. Obviously, the band is back at it with those ensnaring instrumentals. Snarling guitar riffs coupled with explosive fills and beats from behind the kit which rock you harder than the telephone pole rocked that Honda. _Pay attention to the road, kids._ If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to alt-metal, then you’re going to need to pull your head out of that smelly place down under you have it crammed in, as “Death to Something” flips the genre on its head. Like so many rouge waves, this is a collection of songs that crest and crash, dazzling the listener with such a simplistic instrumental combo in ways which just don’t seem possible. Pair these tasty licks and pumping beats with Owls' signature vocals, haunting and powerful, the wailings of a hell bound soul lamenting their sins as they dive headfirst into a cauldron stoked by their own fury, and what you have is a chart-topping album. But, hey, don’t take my word for it. I’m just some wino that likes to sit on street corners and watch car crashes. Hearing is believing my friends, and today is the day you get to hear “Death to Something” for yourself. You can find the album streaming wherever you get your music now, so take the plunge and see firsthand the musical spectacle that not even the Atlantic Ocean, or the Pacific, depending on which way around you’re taking, could hold down. In the meantime, I’m heading back to my street corner. I left my wine behind, and me thinks that just maybe there’s a glassful left sitting in it.

The Providence, Rhode Island deathcore band released their new single, "Reflection," and they didn't go easy on us... It's brutal.

Deathcore Band EDJINN Released Their New Heavy Hitting Djent Track: "Reflection"
Providence, Rhode Island, is bringing in some brutal djent deathcore to the scene, especially with the band **Edjinn**(pronounced e-jinn)! With slamming riffs, heavy drums, and vocal harshes that will have even the meekest of souls in the pit. Formed in 2023, they've released multiple singles and one EP, including instrumental versions of some tracks. On the 1st of October, Edjinn released their newest single, "Reflection", which keeps up the brutality that they have crafted in prior work with more finesse. * * * "Reflection" Single Cover Art * * * "Reflection" is heavy instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically while still being a deathcore song with more easily audible lyrics. This does put it in a more accessible space for heavy music, with the ability to reach more people who like the lyrics to be more understandable and to things like radio and sync placements. Speaking of which, I think this song would be killer in a video game or in a fight, war, or manhunt scene in a movie or show. This song could really take those types of media and amplify it to the max. I can personally envision the track in games like _Call of Duty_ , _DOOM_ , or _Twisted Metal_ (anyone else miss that game) especially. The lyrics themselves slam in like the powerhouse they are from the very opening lines, _"Buried beneath the weight of my skin / A thousand voices dragging me in / Every scar is a memory carved / By the enemy living inside my heart."_ These lines bring attention to mental health and the struggle to heal because of the weight things are pushing you down. * * * Photo Credit: Facebook * * * The production on this song is really clean and clear for a deathcore song. The instrumentals and vocals are layered so that they don't overpower and distort each other, which is great, as the frontman, Evan, actually has quite audible and discernible harsh vocals. All of the elements feel well packaged not only on their own but together and tied into a neat bow with the fact that you can just know this song has to hit 10x harder from the pit at show! All in all, I personally love this band and would love to see more people stumble upon their music. This band has a solid sound, solid shows from posts on social media, and a solid set visual that I think I love. I can see this band taking off and going a long way with their musical endeavors. And I will definitely be on the bandwagon! Edjinn has a solid execution from band to tracks, so now we just need to get themselves out there in more live markets and get their music to reach a little further digitally! After that, it's all history! I can't wait to hear and see what Edjinn puts out and does next. Go listen to "Reflection" and make sure you're hitting follow and share on their single! * * * Photo Credit: Facebook * * * > Meet The Members Of Edjinn! **Evan** - Vocalist **Chris** - Guitarist **Cole** - Guitarist **Garret** - Bassist **Tony** - Drummer * * * Edjinn's Instagram Edjinn's Facebook

Amon Amarth: The Allfather Awakens in Wolverhampton
The Halls in Wolverhampton played host to a smörgåsbord of melodic death metal as legendary Swedes **Amon Amarth** stowed fellow countrymen **Orbit Culture** and **Soilwork** away in their longship, bringing them along for the last UK date of their "The Allfather Awakens" Europe & UK Tour. * * * First up were **Soilwork** , the slither of stage that they were granted for their performance should have been the first hint to just how big the headliners show was going to be, but more on that later. With only little room to manoeuvre it's a huge credit that the band were able to get the crowd so energised early on. Barely three songs in and the circle pits were forming nicely, with "Figure Number Five" (_Figure Number Five_ , 2003) really getting the collective blood pumping. Soilwork "Spirit of No Return" (_Single_ , 2024) is a real highlight with "Death Diviner" (_A Whisp of the Atlantic_ , 2020) probably being the moment where any holdouts in the crowd were fully won over. Charismatic captain of this particular ship, Björn "Speed" Strid, saluting the efforts of a particular group of ladies who appeared to be on chief pit orchestrating duties. It's a shame that by the time we were all fully in the groove our time with Soilwork was over; now in their 30th year, they have such a huge pool of material to pull from, hopefully we will see them back on these shores on a headline run in the not too distant future. SOILWORK SOCIALS * * * The middle coarse of tonight's Swedish Melo-Death feast is **Orbit Culture**. Industrial style backdrops, deep and dark lighting accented with intense in-your-face strobes; everything feels like an assault, in a good way, glorious chaos if you will. It's full of rhythm, it's full of groove, it's a head banging/windmilling neck work out from start to finish. Orbit Culture Circle pits are spun at every opportunity; Niklas Karlsson instructs the audience to jump along to "The Tales of War" (_Death Above Life_ , 2026) with the venue's structural integrity being tested to its limit, it felt like the floor might give out such was the force of the bouncing crowd. Finishing up with a biggie, "Vultures of North" (_Descent_ , 2023), hopefully the crowd have left enough in the tank for the headliners (spoilers: they have), the changeover however, will provide a welcome break for the security at the barrier, a near constant flow of crowd surfers throughout the duration of that set really gave them a workout. ORBIT CULTURE SOCIALS * * * You know exactly what you are going to get at an **Amon Amarth** show; and that is by no means a bad thing at all; there will be Vikings, there will be long ships, there will be swords, shields and drinking horns, there will be pyrotechnics, there will most certainly be a "row pit" at some point during the show; but above all there will be some of the most proficient melodic death metal the genre has to offer from the Swedish legends. But the show that they have taken on the road for this "The Allfather Awakens" tour really is something else; all aspects have been raised by more than a few notches, they are really setting the standard for what can be done for shows in these sized venues. Amon Amarth The doors were earlier than usual for tonight's show, all to afford the headliners the opportunity for a bumper set, at 19 songs long and the better part of 2 hours we were in store for real journey through the full depth of the bands vast back catalogue. **Iron Maiden** 's "Run to the Hills" came before the kabuki curtain drop, which lead into "Gjallarhorn," the first of five tracks from the bands newest album, this years' release _The Allfather Awakens_. A huge Oden lumbered his way out on to the stage, flames shooting out of the top of his staff for "War of the Gods" (_Surtur Rising_ , 2011); with the pyrotechnics aptly remaining dialled to 11 for "Death in Fire" (_Versus the World_ , 2002). The deceiver of the gods himself, Loke, makes an appearance on stage for "Deceiver of the Gods" (_Deceiver of the Gods_ , 2013), by the end of the song he is un-ceremonially booted from the stage by the man mountain that is vocalist Johan Hegg. The runic Himinbjörg gate, that has been framing drummer Jocke Wallgren so far, leaves us along with the visuals of the Bifrost for title track of the new album and namesake for this tour "The Allfather Awakes". Amon Amarth The onscreen visuals have been a real triumph, elevating the whole story behind the bands performance. With longship imagery in full effect, it's time for one of the (many) highlights of an Amon Amarth set; the majority of the crowd park themselves on the floor (those seated in the balcony have been ready to go for a while) and the world famous "row pit" ensues during "Put Your Back Into the Oar" (_Single_ , 2022). The seafaring theme continues with an apt pairing from the new album "We Rule the Waves" (_The Allfather Awakens_ , 2026) Amon Amarth There's a brief moment of solemnity now, the curtain at the back of the stage is drawn obscuring most of the big screens, a campfire crackles and the whole band are now towards the front of the stage with acoustic instruments and a set of standing drums, Johan shedding his more Viking persona is donning a baseball cap and a more casual jacket for the chant like "Upphaf" from _The Allfather Awakens_ , 2026. Curtains drawn back again revealing two huge stone Viking warrior effigies towering above the stage, eyes glowing blue and axes in hand. The energy quickly gets ramped back up again for a trio of heavy hitters, fan-favourites "Guardians of Asgaard" (_Twilight of the Thunder God_ , 2008) and "Shield Wall" _(Berserker_ , 2019) are followed by the most recent single from the new album release "Eight Legs of Thunder" (_The Allfather Awakens_ , 2026) "Raise Your Horns" (_Jomsviking_ , 2016) has any drinks that have yet to be drunk swiftly polished off. "The Way of Vikings" (_Jomsviking_ , 2016) sees a pair of armed and shielded warriors pitched in battle on the stage. We are then treated to a cameo of sorts from **Saxon** 's own Biff Byford as he appears on the screen for a verbal back and forth with Johan during "Saxons and Vikings" (_The Great Heathen Army_ , 2022). Amon Amarth Strobes flash and flicker as a maelstrom is projected on the screen at the back of the stage, lightning flashes, thunder cracks and waves crash as an enormous rendering of Jörmungandr rises up behind the band. Embodying the thunder god himself Johan emerges, Mjölnir raised high above his head crashing it down to fireworks and smoke and flame. The last offering of the night is a big one, and arguably the band's biggest single to date "Twilight of the Thunder God" (_Twilight of the Thunder God_ , 2008). What an incredible night, a bumper set coupled with theatrical staging that did not disappoint and enough pyrotechnics to make the neighbours of Mount Doom hot under the collar. There is only one last thing left to do, raise our horns one last time as **AC/DC** 's "Have A Drink On Me" ushers the crowd of newly anointed Vikings warriors back out into the streets of Wolverhampton. AMON AMARTH SOCIALS * * * The whole line-up continues their rampage across mainland Europe with "The Allfather Awakens" Tour continuing through to mid-November.

One Legendary Night With INOHA In Chicago
Chicago showed up and showed out for San Antonio-based indie rockstars INOHA for October 12th’s show at Metro as part of the “This Might Be Useful Tour.” We were deeply spoiled by INOHA’s two Chicago-based opening acts. Pretoria took the stage for an invigorating 30-minute set to open the evening. If you aren’t fortunate enough to have heard of this indie rock group, take this as your sign to give them a listen. The 4-piece group makes easy-listening indie rock music reminiscent of driving on a warm day with the windows down. Pretoria warmed the sizable crowd up with ease; it certainly helps that INOHA has cultivated a dedicated, respectful, and eager fanbase! Fans danced, cheered, and whooped enthusiastically to hype up Pretoria. The band’s warm and energetic stage presence invited Chicago to reciprocate the wonderful vibes. From recent releases (shoutout to Up 5X!) to unreleased tracks, Pretoria put on one hell of an opening act that the crowd couldn’t help but dance and sing along to. Pretoria. Opening second for INOHA was Capital Soirée, another wonderful Chicago-based indie rock 4-piece band. In their 45-minute long set, the band channeled their effortlessly cool energy that infected the front row at the barricade with ease; fans sang along excitedly to songs like "keep it in the dark", "right time", and "KEROSENE". The venue had filled up pretty significantly at this point, with a sea of bobbing heads and shuffling feet dancing along to the music. The energy continued mounting as the band played a cover of "Accidentally In Love": their question “do y’all fuck with the movie Shrek 2?” was met with rapturous applause and cheering, as fans chanted “SHREK” and sung along. Their organic and polished stage presence even led the frontman to jump into the crowd to party with fans at the end of their set. It was invigorating and thrilling to experience firsthand. Capital Soirée. Shortly after Capital Soirée’s set concluded, INOHA filled the stage and began setting up for their performance. The mere sight of the band summoned rowdy cheers and screaming from eager fans donning INOHA jerseys and tees. After an iconic walk-out to "Gasolina", the band’s punky first notes of "Figure It Out" elicited an indescribable response from the hyped crowd — including prompt crowd surfing by a rogue fan in a papaya costume that gave security a run for their money (with at least 3 surfs in the first 4 songs alone!). The band breezed through a perfect collection of older and newer songs alike, channeling their signature surf-rock tinged indie rock sound for hungry fans. You’d never guess how recently INOHA dropped their newest album, This Might Be Useful, given that the crowd knew every word and chant. The barricade shook with excitement as fans danced and jumped together. As they encouraged Chicago to do, so too did INOHA keep their energy soaring high. As a casual fan of INOHA, I deeply appreciated the camaraderie of the crowd. Soaking up the sounds of summer together with such an excited fanbase was the perfect way to spend a Monday night in Chicago. INOHA is touring through the U.S. and parts of Canada through November 15th. Though their opening acts are scheduled to change, if it’s anything like the first leg of the tour, you can expect an incredible opening set. Catch a show (or two, if you’re lucky) and enjoy the magic of one awesome, jam-packed show. * * * Keep up with INOHA on social media! Bristol Trio splitxlip Debuts with Brutally Honest Track “What You Waiting For?”
“I’ll do it tomorrow.” Whatever “it” is, we’ve all been there. Laundry, scheduling an appointment, starting a diet, etc. Occasionally we do it when we say we will, but most times we push it out another day. Then another week. Eventually, putting it off becomes its own routine. New grit-pop band **splitxlip** has taken those lethargic feelings and turned them into a fiery wakeup call with their debut single, **“What You Waiting For?”** * * * Splitxlip, the project of Bailey Blair, Mikey Lloyd, and Joe Clements, have burst onto the music scene with a loud bang. “What You Waiting For?” has a professional yet authentic garage band sound to it, with bits of Blair’s Bristol accent shining through. The song is a candid anthem for procrastinators who need a little kickstart to get things done. Whether it’s remembering to take the garbage out on time or telling family and friends you love them before it’s too late, the lyrics emphasize how there will never be a “right” time to do anything. Procrastination will always find a reason to push something aside, but you just have to ask yourself, “What are you waiting for?”. Frontwoman Blair (who also wrote and produced the song) based the concept off of her own feelings she had been having. Before forming splitxlip, she was a renowned songwriter for other artists who felt a pull to start making her own music. Learning how to produce music led her to create splitxlip with Lloyd (guitar) and Clements (drums). Blair wants the band’s music to feel relatable, saying, _“A lot of the lyrics probably sound negative on paper because I’m writing about anxiety, loneliness, wasting time or feeling like you’re falling behind. But we want the impact of the music to be positive. We want someone to hear it and go, ‘wow I do that too,’ laugh at themselves a bit, feel less alone and maybe actually go and do the thing they keep saying they’ll do."_ While this may only be their debut, splitxlip has already finished their first album. No details are available yet, but based on their first song, it’ll likely be an album you won’t want to pass you by. * * * ## Follow and Listen to splitxlip INSTAGRAM || YOUTUBE || TIKTOK || SPOTIFY || APPLE MUSIC

The DIY band from Austin, TX discusses community, mental health, and their upcoming tour.
musicscenemedia.com
CorMae: Everything Is SO GREAT! (Or Is It?)
Described as a mix of riot grrrl and egg punk, **CorMae** has been on the grind and busier than ever! On the top of their grind, they have released their first album _Everything is SO GREAT!,_ recently __ announced the "Sunny Side Tour" throughout the western U.S., and signed a record deal with DC-Jam Records / Virgin Music Group. We had the absolute pleasure to chat with vocalist **Amber Appleton** last Thursday, who spoke about the new record, tour, and all things **CorMae**. ## Tell us about CorMae! How was the band formed? "**CorMae** is a social media ad in a dream. I'm originally from Bakersfield, CA, and I met our drummer while visiting Austin, TX. We ended up falling in love over the phone, which eventually led me to move out here. About two years after I moved, we decided to start a musical project together. I initially wanted him to be part of it, but he was, and still is, playing in another band, so he wasn't sure if he could make it work Over time, though, **CorMae** became a central project for both of us. We eventually brought together our first lineup, with Katya on bass, Maria on rhythm guitar, and Tessa on lead guitar. Throughout the band's history, we've gone through three or four different bassists, so the lineup has definitely evolved over time. As for how the band came together, I feel like we're still figuring that out in some ways! Actually, here's a little spoiler that I'll be announcing publicly soon: we're holding open auditions for new members of **CorMae**. So even though the band has been around for a while, we're still growing and figuring out what comes next!" * * * ### Can you give us a general idea of how your latest album came to life? "We were gearing up for our support tour with **of Montreal** after finding out we'd be opening for them for about 16 dates that summer. We wanted to write an album for such a big opportunity because you never really know when the next one will come around. A lot of the album came from where I was mentally at the time. I had quit my corporate job to pursue music full-time, and financially, that was really difficult. It takes a toll on your mental health, and you start questioning yourself, like, 'Am I succeeding enough?' I started putting together demos based on those feelings, and eventually, we all got together to bring those songs to life. For example, 'Mindst8' is a sarcastic take on the idea of fixing your mental state. I like to ask people at our shows, 'Have you ever had a bad day, and someone tells you, "Oh, just meditate, and everything will be fine," when it's really not that simple?' The song sounds really happy and upbeat, but underneath that, it's about the frustration of being told to just fix your mindset when you're struggling. Then there's 'Rut,' which is about exactly what it sounds like: feeling stuck in a rut. If you listen through the album, you'll notice those themes running throughout the songs. Ultimately, we made this album to coincide with the tour and hopefully use that opportunity as a springboard for the band. But at its core, the album is really about mental health struggles and finding community through those experiences." Check out CorMae's band camp here! ## How did you come up with the title “Everything is SO GREAT!” for the album? "There's actually a lyric in 'Mindst8' that goes, 'Lalala, everything is so great.' We love including little Easter eggs like that, and we thought, 'You know what? It's a really long title, but it's sarcastic, and it ties everything together.' That's also where the idea for the album cover came from. I thought, 'What if we dressed up like clowns, but sad clowns?' Almost like we're the clowns working for the man. The whole concept is really just layers of sarcasm that came together, all stemming from that one little Easter egg in the song." * * * ## What do you want your listeners/community to take away from your new album? "I want people to know that they're not alone in this crap. Of course, we all commiserate on the internet, but having songs that touch on struggles with mental health, finances, and how we feel about ourselves is something I think everyone can relate to. I want everyone to feel like it’s alright to feel like shit sometimes, and that we can feel like shit together. We’re all stuck in this bubble of crap right now, and the only way we're going to get through it is by coming together and supporting one another. If we pin each other against each other, then we're alone, and then the bigger umbrella of the people we don't want controlling our lives will have even more control. More than anything, I want this album to bring people together and create a sense of community. I want listeners to feel like there's someone out there who understands what’s going on in their heads, just as much as I want them to relate to what’s going on in mine." * * * ## As you all have played in different bands within the Austin scene, how has that impacted your collaboration as a band? "All of us come from different backgrounds of music, so I’ll write a demo, and I never really know what someone else is going to come up with, especially when it comes to lead guitar. Everyone brings their own kind of sparkle to the music. Right now, that's Tessa with her guitar leads. She adds this brightness and sparkle to songs that are usually a lot darker in my head. It's been really nice having those outside perspectives and seeing what everyone brings to the table. Aaron, on drums, brings a lot of life and energy to the heavier songs, sometimes even adding a sarcastic twist. He has a way of expressing those emotions through his drumming, and I think that's super cool. Everyone brings something different from their own musical influences, and when you put all those ideas together, you end up with something none of us would have created on our own. It's pretty neat." ## Your upcoming U.S. tour is coming up in the next two weeks; congratulations! Do you have any memorable moments from touring in the past? "Thank you! I think we'd all agree that some of our most memorable moments have come from meeting people who are incredibly kind and talented, like Of Montreal. Sharing the stage with them, seeing all those faces in the crowd, and turning some of them into CorMae fans was an amazing experience. For me, the most magical part is walking onto a stage knowing that the band you're opening for is an indie-pop band, while we're this wild, crazy punk rock band. You don't really know what to expect, but then you see the crowd's energy and how everyone comes together through the music. That's where the magic happens. After the show, people came up to us, and some were even crying, saying things like, 'Thank you for helping me through such a hard time in my life. I feel like someone understands what I'm going through, and your energy really uplifted me.' Being able to connect with people like that and knowing our music has made a difference in their lives? That's the magic sauce right there." * * * ## Which songs from the new album are you most excited to perform on this upcoming tour? Can we expect the return of the Purple People Eater? "The Purple People Eater is here! Right now, we're closing every show with 'Purple People Eater.' Will it still be around in 2027? Who knows! So, if you're planning to catch us on this tour, you might want to come see us before the Eater goes away. We actually recorded a version of the song that's available online now, and 'Purple People Eater' will be making its debut in all these cities. It's especially fitting since it's spooky season, and we have shows scheduled throughout the week before and after Halloween. I also got this little fuzzy unicorn thing because our band member Meryl makes fursuits. She actually made my new Purple People Eater hat! Originally, I had this '90s hat that looked like a little bear with a horn, but she ended up making one out of rainbow fur. We sold those during our tour with Of Montreal, so now I have this rainbow Purple People Eater hat that she made, and she even puts on her cat head during the song. It's a whole thing!" * * * ## I love that you all embrace a DIY approach, but I also understand how overwhelming it can be to handle everything yourselves. What have you learned over the years, and what advice would you give to other bands taking a similar approach? "It's a labor of love, and I definitely wouldn't say I've got it all figured out. Aside from the costumes, I handle pretty much everything. Aaron designed the vinyl and has helped with Bandcamp, shipping, and a lot of the logistical stuff, which has been a huge help. I also take care of emails, flyers, and all those little things that go into keeping the band running. If you saw our stop-motion flyer, I actually painted and made all of that myself! My biggest advice would be to try not to burn yourself out but also to keep going, even when things get tough. There are better things on the horizon when you're doing it yourself. You have to find that drive within you. Take a deep breath; give yourself breaks when you need them, but keep pushing forward. If you stop completely, it's easy to disappear. We're actually looking for help right now, so it's not like we want to stay completely DIY forever. It's just where we're at currently. But even as we grow, I want to hold on to that DIY aesthetic and keep the personal, individual side of what we do. I don't want **CorMae** to turn into some corporate monster. Even if we completely blew up one day, I'd still want to preserve the art and the philosophy behind everything we're creating." * * * ## Before we wrap things up, is there anything else you'd like to share about upcoming tours, new music, or any final words for your community? "I'm really excited to head out to the Western U.S. for the first time, and the whole band is looking forward to it! I haven't publicly announced this yet, but this will actually be Tessa's last tour with us, so it's a little bittersweet. She's been with the band since the beginning, and while it's sad to see her go, we're also looking forward to welcoming some new members into the **CorMae** family. We're currently looking for someone who plays bass or possibly rhythm guitar, and we'll be holding auditions and trying people out soon. We already have another tour planned for March, so things are going to get pretty crazy! For now, we're focused on getting ready for the Western U.S. tour and finding the right people to join us. If you're in the Austin area and interested in being part of the band, send us an email at coremaeband@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!" FOLLOW CORMAE! A Chat with Soulcage: Iowa's Answer to Bleeding Out Nu-Grunge
> I like telling stories, and I like the sensation of coming home, or landing. Even if it's a sad idea, the fact that you can always get up or get on your feet again or move forward. Um, like providing hope and just connecting with people.” - Jayden Erdman on songwriting I had been hearing about a “Grunge” revival happening in the rock scene, and I was immediately curious. Having lived through the original Seattle rock era (_I swear, being a teenager and watching my favorite artists die one after another is one of the reasons why I became a therapist),_ I know what that vibe was like. It was a time of honesty in rock music. Seattle is a moody place to be, no matter what is going on in the culture or the country, but in the early 90s, unrest was brewing. There was a disenchantment and a dis-identification with the whole extravaganza of the 80s. With hair bands, outrageousness, flash, and glam coming off of the disco world of the late 70s, it was basically a party all the time- complete with champagne bottles, bouncing blondes, and expensive hotel rooms to trash. But life didn’t feel like a party for a lot of people at that time, and an emerging rock scene started showing it. These Gen X bands rejected the inauthenticity and the pomp, and got on stages wearing plaid over their band Ts, ripped jeans with boots, and they screamed over crunching guitars like they were being **torn apart.** We ate it up. It was real, it was raw, it was unpolished, and the media called it “Grunge.” This was the time of the anti-star, and a struggle against disproportionate power dynamics, toxic masculinity, and “fame and fortune.” The drugs at the time were not a party. Heroin and depression were ripping through the crowd like the reaper himself, taking too many people with them. I remember the day Kurt Cobain died, and Courtney read parts of his suicide note to his fans live on MTV. It was brutal. Photo Credit: Zach Hasan So, when I first saw the term “Nu-Grunge” floating around, I wanted to see what was going on. It turns out a lot of it is coming out of the Midwest. I can’t say I’m surprised. Soulcage is a five-piece band out of Des Moines that is tapping into a dark, rip-your-heart-out sound reminiscent of the 90s. I got to chat with them recently and dig a little deeper into what this next generation of grunge rock is like. “We didn’t create 'Nu-Grunge'… I don’t know who did, but that term gave a bunch of bands an identity and a lane,” lead singer **Jayden Erdman** pointed out when I asked them about that label and their sound. **Ace Tipton** : "There's so many, you know, Grunge elitists that are just like, 'absolutely no way, you can't do it 'cause you're not in the 90s, you're not in Seattle, it's not the same, you're a bunch of copycats, you're the same as everybody', and I'm like, okay, I get it, but at the same time we have to figure out a way to like categorize our music." I found this interesting coming from Grunge "elitists," because the Seattle rock scene was labeled "Grunge" by the media, and most of the time they didn't identify with that term themselves. It was created purely to categorize the music at the time. Ace explained that he started out in a cover band. When artistic differences drove him, Jayden (Young), and AJ to split off and start experimenting with doing their own thing, they started a thrash project and got some gigs lined up. Then a change in the band lineup left them without a vocalist or a guitarist. Ace brought in his friend from high school, Anthony, on guitar, and then they found their vocalist and “second Jayden,” who goes by Erdy, on Facebook. Erdman: “I wasn’t even looking for a band. I went through a tough time and just added everybody on Facebook that had anything to do with music.” Tipton: “I found him and just looked at some pictures and videos…” Erdman: “I was in a bar with like 12 people with my dad just singing Harvest Moon by Neil Young, and for some reason he looked at that and thought ‘that was the guy’.” (Laughs) Tipton: “We pretty much just had to make sure you had a pulse.” (Laughs) This was understandable because the band was set to play for 2,000 people, opening for an AC/DC cover band, just over two months after reforming, so they had to learn a lot in a short period of time. Not just the music. They had to learn each other as artists and how to work together. Tipton: "We were in here [the studio] pretty much every day, because also, at that time we were inexperienced ourselves, and Anthony and Erdy had never even played in a band before, so you gotta find that chemistry in ten weeks to be able to play a stage that big. You know?" This band has chemistry. Watching them talk about their journey and creative process, the excitement was alive. It felt like a cool electricity. When I asked them about their writing process, they gushed about each other, the way that we do when we talk about people in our lives who we are really proud of. Erdman: “Jaden can come up with 80% of a song musically in probably about five minutes; I've seen it happen. That's a privilege to have. Anthony sits and broods over masterpieces; he's like, ‘This is a thing I'm just noodling with', and it's the most beautiful thing you've ever heard. AJ is our engine; he's got a groove, but he's also got a tender soul, and he'll come up with some really cool lyrics.” ### MSM: "Are there any songs in particular that are meaningful for you, or that you're proud of? Photo Credit: Zach Hansen **Anthony Cooper** : "I like End of the Line, I think, the most. 'Cause I helped a good amount in writing some of the parts for that. And it, uh, it evokes a good feeling in me to play it." Erdman: "End of the Line is there for me too. It's one I look forward to playing, and it's the hardest one. It's about losing someone and not being able to do anything about it. I'm most proud of Clouds. Clouds was an Anthony idea that he just doodled on, and was like, 'yeah, I wrote this like five years ago', and I looked at it, and I'm like, this is, this is a masterpiece.” With all the respect and synergy between them, I was curious about how they handle artistic differences of opinion. ### MSM: "So when you guys have like artistic differences of opinion, you just kind of work it out amongst yourselves and try different things and give it time?" Erdman: "I think that's the coolest part of what we do is even if there is a difference of opinion, then different ideas are coming to the table, and sometimes a third one comes, and then it could lead to something entirely different." Tipton: "It's a day one rule, we just check our egos at the door... let it have its space, let it breathe." ### MSM: "I guess, do you get negative comments? How do you handle that?" Erdman: “That was a big thing for me to get over at the beginning. When you're smaller, and you don't have the following, and you're not getting the interactions on your posts, you know, you're being vulnerable with your music, and you really hope that people like it. When you're getting three good comments, you get one or two bad ones, you know, that starts to weigh on you for a minute, and I'm completely questioning, like, man, am I even doing the right thing?” When talking with the band, I was thinking about the social and cultural climate that might be fueling this return to the unpolished sound. It could be the age of autotune, AI, the race for perfection, and maybe even just being behind screens. I know I crave a sweaty, dirty, imperfect, emotional time when I go see live shows. There are ups and downs to social media fanbases. ### MSM: I know social media has had a big impact on music. Do you have a lot of local fans that come see you live? Erdman: "I would say we've passed the 100-show mark in our last two years together. In Des Moines, I mean, I think we have our hometown on lock. We are doing a regional Midwest tour with another band called Rapture." Tipton: "So, uh, we're definitely trying to like build the scene, and show that interaction because it can't just all be on social media." ### MSM: Where did the band name come from? Tipton: We feel that it’s a perfect combination to describe our sound with the more soulful elements of our lyrics and ability to pull back, but also the cage being more representative of our metal influences. It’s the dichotomy of the calm before the storm, if that makes sense." For those of us looking for the churning, hard rock experience that also gets us right in the feels, it does. Soulcage's debut album is called Monstrophie, and they have released three new singles: Drool, Back on My Feet, and W.D.Y.W.F.M. They have a couple of dates left on their Midwest run, so check out their socials for upcoming shows! _Note: This interview was edited for length and clarity._ Soulcage IG

Melodic Metalcore is Back with Imminence's New Release "Axis Mundi"
Last Friday was a big day for fans of melodic metalcore as **Imminence** released their highly anticipated sixth album, _Axis Mundi_. As someone who has become a huge fan of the band over the past couple album cycles, I was very excited and intrigued about what the new album would bring. **Imminence’s** music has one of the most unique sounds, and the way they can transition from the nastiest breakdown you’ve ever heard to the most emotional and moving orchestral piece is truly impressive and is what drew me to their music when I first discovered them. Throughout their career they have always excelled at balancing these two sonic extremes, but with _Axis Mundi_ the band really proved just how creatively they could integrate the two different styles of music. * * * One of the main things that caught my attention in the record was the pacing of the songs. How a piece of music is structured can really make the difference between a decent listening experience and a brilliant one. If an album only contains one pace, whether it be a slower, melodic one or, on the flip side, a nonstop, balls-to-the-wall rage fest throughout, I tend to get really bored as everything starts to blur together. I did not have this issue in the slightest with _Axis Mundi_. Throughout the entire runtime, the band knew the perfect moments to slow down the track, opting for more instrumental and atmospheric sounds and then slowly building up to the crescendo when all hell begins to break loose. This is something I have always appreciated about how **Imminence** approaches their music. All of the patient buildup just makes the explosion in the chorus and breakdowns so much more powerful and exciting. * * * _Axis Mundi_ is one of the few records that I have listened to in the past year where I can genuinely say I enjoy every single song on the album. Each track is incredibly unique to itself while consistently keeping the same emotional depth and passion that makes the album what it is. The standout tracks, in my opinion, are definitely the album opener “Twisting In the Wind,” which lyrically I believe to be the most impactful on the record; "Crestfallen," which I believe is about to become a long-lasting fan-favorite, the absolute barn burner that is “The Sword That Never Bends"; and finally, the closing track “Exodus,” which is the perfect example of sonic balancing that I mentioned previously. The ending tracks heavy hitting chorus coupled with the most beautiful, cinematic violin lead instrumental, closing off both the song and album, really leaves a lasting impression after every listen. * * * Ever since the band began releasing singles from this record several months ago, I have been waiting patiently but also anxiously for the release. Their album _The Black_ was one of my favorite records to date, and I was curious if the next release would be able to stack up to the sheer excellence that was the band's previous record. However, after hearing the new record, I am very happy to report that _Axis Mundi_ is not only a worthy successor to _The Black_ but also a great example of just how creative and consistent **Imminence** continues to be as a band. The new record perfectly incorporates newer sounds that the band hasn’t experimented with in previous records while still keeping true to the sound that makes **Imminence** who they are. I am very excited to see where their career takes them in the coming years, because if _Axis Mundi_ is anything to go by, **Imminence** may just become known as one of the most talented and recognizable bands in metalcore. And for me, they already are. * * *

Musings from an Ex-Beach Bum: A Review of the new Interrupters Single "Warrior Spirit"
In the late 2010s, I found myself living the life of a Midwest beach bum on the shores of Lake Michigan. If you have never seen the Great Lakes in person, this may sound ridiculous to you, but anyone who's been to Kimmel Beach themselves knows that the Great Lakes are more like freshwater inland seas than what you’re probably picturing when I say lake. I spent a fat portion of the summer of 2019 hiking the towering dunes, exploring crumbling sandbars, fishing _where permissible_ , and, on clear nights, sleeping on the beach, drifting off to the sound of colossal twenty-foot waves crashing on the pebbly shores. During this time, I developed an obsession with reggae and ska; the beach has that effect on you. My days were soundtracked with Sublime, Saving Ferris, Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, and the Interrupters. I’m about three hours from the Lakes now, but these bands still hold a special place in my heart. Each time I hear one of them on the radio, I find myself back to being nineteen years old, watching a rip tide eat everything in its path with a fish taco in one hand and a bottle of rum in the other. So, when I heard there was a new Interrupters single dropping, I was beyond stoked. Photo: "Warrior Spirit" Single Art If you have never been a piece of pothead surf scum, then you may not be aware that the Interrupters are LA’s native ska all-stars. Over the course of their career, these cats have released four studio albums, earned multiple spots on the indie and rock charts, and toured from coast to coast. It’s been a long road for the band, and this new single, “Warrior Spirit,” is their latest step forward into an ever brighter future. The Interrupters have been given many labels over the years: ska, 2-tone, and punk, to name a few. But “Warrior Spirit” is unlike anything they have put out thus far. The song has some of those classic punk elements you would expect from the band: the fast guitars, a quick, punchy beat, and raspy vocals peppered throughout; however, this is undoubtedly a new wave song. It’s in the undulating synth melodies, which take those punk-rock drums and morph them into something all new; it’s in the arrangements, which are exploratory and harmonious instead of sharp and biting. It’s distinctly 80s, something you may have heard from the Talking Heads, the B-52s, or the Police in their heyday. It’s not ska, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make me want to crack open an ice-cold 40, bury my feet in the sand, and watch the sun set over the Chicago skyline far off on the other side of Lake Michigan. This one is a real treat for us longtime Interrupters fans; it’s a chance to see the band try something new while still honoring our old-school favorites. If you’re a recent convert, this may not be the most accurate representation of the rest of the band's catalog, but it has all the energy and style of the classics, so you really can’t go wrong with it. You can catch “Warrior Spirit” streaming everywhere now, so take a moment today to step away from the gloom of October and let the Interrupters wow you with this retro hit.

Funk and Philosophy: A Look at Dizgo's New Album "Innerstate"
There's a nature preserve a mile down the line from my pad I like to go hike in on chilly mornings. Earlier this week I was out there sitting on this perfect rock I found on the edge of the white river, wide and flat, ideal for a good sit, watching some white-tailed deer on the other side getting a drink. I'm sitting there enjoying this beautiful day—clear skies, a crisp fifty degrees, leaves falling, a bottle of absinthe tucked into my coat pocket—when my phone goes off. Obviously, my first instinct was to chuck the fucker in the water, but I restrained myself, and thank god I did, as it turned out the notification was an early access link to the new Dizgo album. Dizgo is, of course, the funk-jam gem of Bloomington, Indiana, the town famous for its prestigious college, happening music scene, and the primo gel tabs you can buy on every street corner. These guys are the creme of the crop in the Indiana psychedelic rock scene. If you're going to go to a jam band show, Dizgo is the one to attend, hands down. I'm one of many Hoosiers who follow these dudes religiously, so when I got a first look at the new album, it was about as exciting as winning the lottery. Photo: Press Shot Provided by the Band The new record, dubbed "Innerstate," is Dizgo's fourth studio album. Thirteen tracks and an hour and seventeen minutes long, it's a miracle we only had to wait two years after the release of their last album, "Melt," to get this one. We've already gotten a little taste of "Innerstate," with several singles having been released to tease the record, such as "Exit 59," "Orbital," and "Intuition." The album is all about looking inside yourself, addressing who you are, how you relate to others, and ramming a metaphorical car through the embankments of your own psyche. If I may quote the band's own words, "Innerstate" is "about movement, self-discovery, transformation, and interconnectedness. "Hey, that's awesome. We all love a long look in the mirror, especially when we're several grams of mushrooms deep watching our features morph to match those of one of the mutant freaks from that movie, 'The Cave.'" But how is the album? "Innerstate" is over an hour of groovy funk-rock licks and heart-palpitating jams. Jam bands are notorious for coming up short in the studio; it's a genre that's meant for the live stage. That's just a fact. You will not, however, find that to be the case here. I've seen Dizgo live somewhere between seven and eight hundred times, so I can say with utmost certainty that this record is a perfect representation of a Dizgo live show. It helps to have a Grammy-winning producer like Vance Powell working on the album, but, if anything, "Innerstate" is a testament to the fact that Dizgo is on a level above that of the rest of the jam band scene. Photo: "Innerstate" Album Cover Lock yourself in your basement with some mood lights on and put the record on over a Bluetooth speaker, not any speaker, mind you; it must at minimum be able to rattle your windows, or you're just putzing around, and you can almost imagine what it's like to see the band live. You'll be entranced by a whirlwind of bumping guitars, funky bass lines, pounding drums, and some of the best key tickling you'll find in this hemisphere. "Innerstate" is a trip into your own mind; it's all the thrill and introspection of a heroic dose of ayahuasca without the visions of gyrating rainbow fractals and fields of human skulls. It's a collection of high-impact funk-infused jams which demand to be played at maximum volume, preferably while bathed in neon lights dancing in the broken glass-riddled parking lot of some charred industrial complex, feeling the hooks and riffs reverberate off the crumbling smokestacks. You can find "Innerstate" streaming wherever you get your music now. I must implore you to give it a listen today. This may just be my favorite release of 2026, and it's not just because we finally have a studio release of my favorite Dizgo song, "Curio," and I didn't even have to sell my soul to get it! So go out and give "Innerstate" a listen today. While you do that, I better get heading back to the pad. I love my rock, but the bottle's empty, and everyone knows you can't enjoy a hike while you're drying out.

British rock band Unpeople have come out with their first ever full length album; here's what we think.
musicscenemedia.com
Unpeople: the Debut Album is Here!
Gather around everyone! There’s a new British rock band ready to take over the world. Meet **Unpeople** , a London-based rock band that keeps you guessing. The British quartet is made up of **Jake Crawford** (vocals and guitar), **Luke Caley** (vocals and guitar), **Em Lodge** (vocals and bass), and **Richard Rayner** (drums). They’re known for energetic live performances, most notably at festivals such as Leeds, Reading, and Download. Their heavy riffs and earnest lyricism are tenfold in their debut album, _We Are Unpeople_. Starting off the track list is “Clouds,” which begins with a compelling line, “ _finally feel like you got all the answers now_.” Once I heard that lyric, I immediately wanted more. The harmonies are so smooth, even in the chorus. Even though this song is lyrically cynical, it makes you want to dance/headbang at the same time. The breakdown before the chorus was a pleasant surprise and made me realize it’s time to expect the unexpected with this band. “Friends,” is a more vulnerable track with a lot of screaming flowing into singing and vice versa. The rawness of the vocals makes the song really personable, the feeling of trying to keep it together while losing your mind and being scared of love. This breakdown was picturesque; I can already picture how hard that is going to go at a show, and it will be a great time to call out the moshers. Moving onto “The Garden,” the natural sounds in the beginning of the tune are quickly combated with a heavy chunky bass line. The chanty chorus, along with the layered vocals, is well produced and meshes so well together. Unpeople does an excellent job with harmonizing, and this track (along with the album itself) really proves that. Now, we’re going to get angry with our next two tracks, “Swallow,” and “Bottle It.” Both tracks have an abruptness to them and are also a gentle reminder to be nice. “Hold your tongue before I bite it out,” is incredible imagery to really highlight how stupid people can truly fill anyone up with rage. These are the two heavier tracks on the album that call out hypocrisy and let you know it’s not welcome in this band’s universe. “Blueprints,” provides a break in the album and delivers a slower melodic track in comparison to the front half of the album. Even though the song is still a little slower, the vocals are still as strong and synchronized as ever. The song also provides us with an epic dramatic guitar solo towards the end of the track. The gradual build up in “Haunted,” and usage of the echoey “La, La, La,” set the atmosphere up well for this track. “ _When you go I lose sight of all I know_ ,” is a lyric that really emphasizes the feeling of being trapped into a descension of madness. “Waste,” then follows up with even more captivating lyrics. “ _You doubled down, you should have left some room to grow,_ ” is such a great diss to anyone who’s ever tried to make you feel less than. Additionally, the lyric, “ _shooting yourself in the foot with the starting gun, good going_ ” is fantastic, and goes back to the same energy delivered in the tracks, “Swallow,” and “Bottle It.” Check Out Unpeople's Website! If you’ve been listening to the album and thinking, “when will there be a song I can stomp to?” Look no further, “Look Up,” is that stompy anthem with a constant stable drum beat. Which is then followed by “Kangareuben,” that brings in the chaos and heaviness of the album. Now after some Google searches, I’m still not entirely sure what a Kangareuben is, but I’ll take five of them. “Smother,” continues on to provide that steady beat that additionally occurs in “Look Up,” and “Kangereuben.” In “Smother,” the screaming that happens on the word, "pressure," in the chorus feels so incredibly relatable, especially in this state of the world. It almost makes me feel like I’m being smothered. If this is how I’m going to get smothered, sign me up! The album concludes with “As You Were.” A unique drum beat to start off the song which leads into an anthem like song. I don’t know exactly why or how, but I know I’m meant to hear this played to thousands of people. It has this drama to the vocals and all instruments that feels cinematic. I feel like this being their final song on the track list was a way of the band putting their final stamp of approval on the album. This album is a master class of how to make your debut album impactful. It tells you from the very first second of this album being played who this band is and what they’re about. Their lyricism is the perfect kind of nihilism you hear in some of the biggest rock anthems, paired with riffs that’ll have you hooked. This band should be on anyone’s radar, especially if you love any kind of British rock music.

The Magic of The Midnight - Live in Raleigh, NC
If there's one thing that makes us human, it's how fascinated we are by the unexplainable. Whether it's crazy science beyond our comprehension, odd coincidences, or even a man in a suit pulling a rabbit out of a hat, magic activates a part of our brains that nothing else can. If I had to describe what truly encapsulates that feeling of magic for me, it would be music, without a doubt. From its simple, soft melodies to relatable, soul-crushing lyrics, it’s a genuine miracle that mere vibrations in the air can make us feel a swell of emotions that nothing else compares to. That feeling of bliss as your favorite song plays, or those goosebumps you get when a new tune strikes that perfect resonance in your soul, is a rush of warmth unlike any other. And the best part is, there's a practically endless amount of it out there across hundreds of genres. For anyone who seeks a band that encapsulates this supernatural energy in every track, look no further than **The Midnight**. * * * With 14 years of history rooted in the City of Angels, **Tyler Lyle** and **Tim McEwan** have been one of the world’s dominant synthwave acts, with six studio albums and even a successful graphic novel. They produce their music with their motto in mind: the Japanese phrase “mono no aware” (物の哀れ), which loosely translates to “the sad beauty of seeing time pass—the aching awareness of impermanence.” Drawing inspiration from the Outrun aesthetic and the 2011 film Drive and its score, Lyle and McEwan have transformed their mutual love for 80s synths into what fans around the world now know as **The Midnight**. Tyler Lyle (lead vocals, guitar), Oliver McEwan (bass), Justin Klunk (saxophone, synths), Rhett Shull (guitar), James Small (drums) After a few sold-out LA shows in 2017, the duo began touring in 2018 and later tripled their touring group's size to include a saxophonist, two more guitarists, and a synth player. McEwan stepped away from touring in 2024 to focus on music production and his personal life but is still heavily involved with the project! Sadly, he won’t be on stage for the foreseeable future, though. With the band’s ninth tour in progress, they stopped in Raleigh for the fourth time this past Friday night to bring their magic back to The Ritz! After Bonnie McKee’s stellar opening set, **The Midnight** slowly walked onto the stage as the instrumental of “Sanctuary” played, and as **Tyler Lyle** grabbed his microphone, the lights lit up the room to introduce the band’s very own magic show. With the first three tracks coming straight from their new album, _Syndicate_ , which celebrated its first anniversary on the 3rd, fans, both old and new, were welcomed into the performance. “Gloria” was played next, from their first EP back in 2014. Seeing how lively and excited the crowd was during every song, Tyler gave a short speech before playing “The Comeback Kid,” admiring what he called the crowd’s “collective effervescence,” and talked about how the meaning of this next song has changed for him over time. Through tragedy, loss, and hardship, Tyler’s definition is now completely different from what he originally wrote it about, and that’s okay with him. He asked the audience to pull their loved ones close and join in for the song, and with several teary eyes, they did. And it was beautiful. @kyle.artgraphy As the night drew on, opener Bonnie McKee took the stage to join **The Midnight** in a spectacular performance of “Runaways” and “Jason” in a sparkly new outfit, despite her injured leg, and blew the audience away! Somehow, the show’s mysticism continued to grow, and before performing the band’s most popular song, “Los Angeles,” Tyler talked for a bit about the very magic we were all feeling that night and how, just like music helped him throughout his life, he hopes it’s done the same for us. Everyone in attendance was invited to scream out the name of their favorite songs and albums, which flooded the venue as over a thousand people cried out in unison to praise the music they held so dearly to them. Unsurprisingly, the main act received the most praise, but so many artists were named that I’d be here all night if I tried to list the ones I heard! Throughout the song, the audience swung their hands from side to side during the chorus and sent literal waves across the crowd. @kyle.artgraphy The show eased into its final few songs with classics such as “Days of Thunder," “Sunset,” and "Vampires," with its killer sax solo performed by **Justin Klunk** as he hopped off stage and walked directly through the eager crowd. And somehow, almost as soon as it began, the lights dimmed for the final time that night as the twinkling outro of “Sunset” faded from every speaker in the room, only to be replaced by thunderous applause as the band exited the stage. Some fans went home, hand in hand; others stuck around to socialize for a bit, and more went back to the merch stand to pick up a shirt, vinyl, or cassette, but every soul that came to see the show left happier and with a smile on their face and warmth in their heart. The “Time Machines” tour concludes in Mexico in about two weeks, with upcoming dates in New England and the Midwest, so if you’re nearby and have been itching to see them live, you’ve still got time! It’s definitely not a show you want to miss, and it’s been one of my favorite concerts I’ve attended this year—just as good as when I saw them at the same venue around this time in 2023. Their latest album is absolutely worth a listen if you haven’t listened yet, and the band has hinted that after this tour they’ll get to work on new music! Banks Arcade Embraces Being Underdogs With Sophomore Album, SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR
**Banks Arcade** , a New Zealand-born band that combines metal, electronic, and hip-hop genres to create their own unique sound, have finally sent _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ out into the world. The album explores the long-standing underdog mentality the band has held, especially being from an area with limited music industry reach, and working through complex emotions and sonic structures that are interesting for all listeners. We sat down with frontman **Joshua O'Donnell** to talk about releasing the album, hearing audiences sing along to songs they hadn't even heard yet (and songs they have), and the meaning behind _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ for the band and for the people in their live show crowds. __SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR__ Album Cover _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ is available everywhere after several months of teasing and dropping singles from the album. **Banks Arcade** performed the project in full at their live release parties in Melbourne on September 24 and Sydney on September 26, giving audiences a taste of what’s to come for the band as they prepare for their next tour alongside **From Ashes to New**. Upcoming Tour with From Ashes to New For O’Donnell, that transition from making the album to letting other people experience it has brought a sense of relief more than anything else. “It feels great. I'm glad that people are able to listen to it, and it seems like they're enjoying it,” O’Donnell said. “It was one of those situations where I felt so happy with the album; all the boys felt happy with the album. So as much as I hoped people would like it, I was very detached from what happened. I was excited for people to be able to have the experience. I think it's gone wonderful so far.” That experience has already extended beyond streaming platforms and into the live setting. When Banks Arcade began performing the album, one of the more unexpected reactions came from hearing audiences sing along to songs that had not even been released yet. “I think when we played up in Sydney especially, it was crazy to hear that some people were singing the songs that we hadn't even put out yet,” O’Donnell said. “Because we'd been posting little reels and teasers of, like, the hooks and stuff, and that was definitely weird. Because I was like, ‘How in the world are they seeing this stuff?’ And then I was like, ‘Oh, you literally learned this from the reels,’ which is funny." The reaction also showed O’Donnell something about the way listeners can experience a song now. Even when audiences had only heard pieces of the songs through social media, they were still willing to follow them into the rest of the track. “I think people were hearing the hook in the first part of the song, and by the end, they were singing along,” he said. “Which, you know, that gave us a lot of confidence to feel like, ‘Oh, I think these songs might… might be able to resonate with people on a deeper level.’” That connection is particularly significant for an album whose title comes from an identity Banks Arcade has embraced for years: the outsider, the underdog, and the person who isn't necessarily expected to come out on top. But _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ isn't about being content with second place. “Oh, I definitely don't think that,” O’Donnell said. “You know, I'm a competitive person. I want to win. I think the second place thing is just the idea of not necessarily being the first pick on the team and being more of like the ‘doing it for the people.’” O’Donnell draws that idea from his involvement with martial arts, where the expected winner isn't always the person an audience becomes most invested in. “I follow and am involved with martial arts very closely, and I think that there are certain fighters who are the cream of the crop that come through, and, you know, they're always the favorite to win, and they're cool to watch, but everyone also loves the guy who's meant to lose but ends up, you know, having the big moments and shocking everyone,” he said. For **Banks Arcade** , that underdog identity is also tied to where the band comes from. “And I think that that's kind of what we align with; being from small towns in a small country, it's hard to get ahead, and it's hard to make friends in this industry, and so we've always aligned with our underdog spirit, and that's where the name came from, really.” That same idea of finding their own path carries through into the album's creative process. O’Donnell has previously described one of the biggest changes between _Future Lovers_ , the band's debut album, and _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ as having “better taste and better decision-making," while the band also took on more of the production themselves. For O’Donnell, though, “better” isn't necessarily about making objectively superior musical decisions. “I think that it really is just aligning with what your own taste is,” he said. “Because if you think about, like, say, better decision-making or better taste, you know, everyone likes different things. So there is really nothing that's better than anything else. I think better means [to be] truer to yourself.” That became particularly important as the band worked through the familiar problem of finishing a project and no longer feeling connected to the songs. “There's this common thing with artists, which I've experienced throughout my whole musical journey, which is that you get to the end of a project, and then you're like, ‘We don't really like these anymore. We've worked on them so much,’” O’Donnell said. “And I think that part of that is a drive to continue progressing and doing something better, but then part of that is potentially an issue with being able to find that alignment with what you really want to hear.” For _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ , that meant developing a stronger sense of what belonged on the album and what didn't. “I think that it was just having this one kind of palette to draw from, and even though it still is an eclectic album, trying to make the themes more aligned,” he said. “Without getting into the exact specifics of what that means, I think that it was just kind of hearing something and being like, ‘Does this align with the rest of the album and the feeling of it? Does this feel the same?’... It doesn't matter if it's kind of drawn from a different genre or if it's more intense,” O’Donnell said. “And I guess that that's something that's kind of abstract, like you can't really point to exactly what that means.” That instinct led to some difficult decisions. **Banks Arcade** actually created four singles that ultimately didn't make it onto the album. “We had actually made four singles before the album that we never put out,” O’Donnell said. “And I think, you know, those are still really good songs. Like, I listen to them, and I'm like, ‘Man, those are really good,’ but they just didn't align with this project. Maybe they'll come out at a different point someday, but they just didn't align with this one.” The writing on _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ was closely personal to O’Donnell and involved a more collaborative relationship with drummer **James Feekes** , who also contributed significantly to the record's production and sonic direction. “I think a lot of it is personal for me,” O’Donnell said. “Until this album, I had really kind of written in a vacuum and done a lot of the stuff myself.” He continued to explain his writing process: “Sometimes I'll have an experience, and I'll extrapolate from that so it's not, you know, just the exact thing that happened to me. But it's kind of taking maybe an experience, you know, you think about, like, love songs or songs about loss." > These are experiences that happen to everyone, so it's a universal thing that humans feel, and that's why those songs connect on such a deep level to so many people. Feekes' involvement in the production changed when and how the band approached the sonic side of the songs. “We built out a lot of the sonic landscape earlier, whereas in the past, we've kind of been like, ‘We'll make it like this, and then we'll make it better later,’ which can be a trap,” O’Donnell said. Part of that realization came from trying to recreate moments from demos in a studio environment. “I think that sometimes you make something, and there is that raw good thing that you like out of the vocals that you get, and it's that lightning in a bottle, and it's hard to recreate that,” he said. “And so we realized that a lot of the times we've kind of got these guitar takes and got these vocal takes that I would do in my demos, and then we would try and recreate it all in a studio, and it would never really… it would never really have that same thing.” Working with Feekes earlier in the process helped solve some of that problem. “He was baking in samples and sounds and giving me sounds to write with that made the process a lot easier,” O’Donnell said. “And I also upskilled a lot on my vocal recording and guitar recording, so that by the time we went to work with Sam, we got in the studio with him, and he was able to add that last, kind of, 15% of production stuff that really brought the album to life.” There is another thread running through the album that connects back to the blend of genres between metal and hip-hop that **Banks Arcade** seeks to share. “There's also a lot of that same sort of underdog drive, almost like you hear on, like, early hip hop albums where I feel like the trajectory of a lot of hip hop artists is you kind of have the albums where they're like, ‘I'm fucking broke and I'm trying to make it out,’” O’Donnell said. “And then they have the albums where they're like, ‘I'm fucking rich, and I'm the man.’ And then, you know, so… and then they fall off again, and then it's just kind of that cycle of being down bad and up good.” For **Banks Arcade** , that cycle has translated into a feeling that the band is putting everything it has into the present moment. “So, I think that there's a lot of that, like, we feel that this moment is our last shot and that we're giving it everything that we have,” O’Donnell said. “And I think that energy is through all of the different themes in the album.” When asked about what success would look like for the band with _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ and future releases, O’Donnell explained, "I mean, we have that intrinsic feeling of success from the music itself and from the shows that we get to play for our fans. And I think that that is… that's all that you can hope for, really, because at the end of the day, separate from the finances, it's really just the same thing, scaling.” “Like, you know, once you have 250, 300 people who want to sing your songs back to you, and then you have 3,000 people, it's still the same weird experience of, like, ‘Oh, there's a whole bunch of people that are just here because they connect with this music,’” he continued. “And I think that as long as you can find that joy and that peace in doing it within yourself, then it doesn't really matter what happens on the outside. You just have to sort out how to pay rent.” With _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ out in the world, O’Donnell's biggest hope is simply that people connect with it. “I just hope that it invokes a strong emotion,” he said. “That's what I like from music; whether it's inspiration or whether it connects to an experience, I just like that intensity to come from music.” He also talked about the physical release: “I hope that people enjoy it, and if they do enjoy it, they go pick up a physical copy, because we put a lot of work into making the physical copies look really sick.” And I have to agree; the physical merch and release have amazing designs. _SECOND PLACE SUPERSTAR_ may mark where **Banks Arcade** is now, but O’Donnell doesn't seem particularly interested in treating it as a finish line. There are songs that didn't make the album and the possibility of future standalone releases for those songs, as well as a band still trying to find a way to make music on its own terms. For now, the goal is simple: keep creating, keep playing, and keep finding the people who want to be there for it. > I think that as long as you can find that joy and that peace in doing it within yourself, then it doesn't really matter what happens on the outside. Following his sold-out support slot for No Cigar, Charlie Farmer talks live performances, new music, touring, and the importance of connecting with fans.

Inside the Sound of Charlie Farmer: Live Shows, New Music, and What’s Next
Newcastle's own **Charlie Farmer** has been generating plenty of buzz in England's indie rock scene lately,**** and I was lucky enough to have him carve out some time out of his busy schedule for an exclusive interview shortly after his recent show supporting New Zealand psychedelic rock outfits—No**** Cigar. I’ve been listening to Charlie’s music a lot over the past few weeks, so I was excited to finally ask him a few questions that had been on my mind. * * * ### Jenna: "So I heard your show with No Cigar went over really well. How did it go from your point of view?” **Charlie:** “The show was awesome! It was really cool, and it actually sold out. Many people showed up early, too. Because there was only one support, it wasn’t like people were slowly trickling in. It felt like a lot of people were there for the support.” ### **"How did it feel opening up for No Cigar?"** **Charlie:** “It was pretty surreal. That was the biggest crowd I had ever played for, and it was cool to have a whole stage to walk across. Just looking out and seeing all those people was incredible. The crowd was really enthusiastic, and I felt like I could genuinely connect with them. I always try to connect with fans during and after the set, too—I even tossed a pick out at one point.” ### **“You mentioned the show went well and even sold out. Was this your first time performing at a venue that was at capacity?”** **Charlie:** “Not the first one—I think it was my third—but definitely the biggest. I think the room held around 300 to 400 people. I’m not sure exactly how many tickets they could sell because that includes crew, but I think they said somewhere around 350 to 380. It was definitely the biggest sold-out show I’ve done. The other sold-out shows were in 100-cap rooms, which had a really cool vibe because they were so small and you felt like you were right on top of the crowd. With this venue, though, the room was a lot bigger and the stage was really high up, so it felt a little more distant. I was actually worried about that because part of my act is about creating that connection with people. At the end of the last song, I usually jump into the crowd and dance with everyone just to show that I’m living in the moment with them. I wasn’t sure if I’d still be able to do that, but I managed to jump over the barricade, which was really cool. I’ve seen a few videos people took of it, and you can see the happiness on everyone’s faces. I got to show them what a Charlie Farmer show is all about!” ### **I’ve always found that the more in-your-face or theatrical a live show is, the easier it is for the crowd to get immersed in it. Is that something you think about when writing your songs and planning how they translate live?”** **Charlie:** “I think I’m in a really good spot with my music because, with certain songs, half of the song might just be me playing. It’s very still and calm and brings everything down, and then the second half kicks in and completely changes the energy. It’s nice having that sort of contrast. With my music, I can be really dynamic with it, and that’s part of the reason I write the songs the way I do- so I can do those sorts of things live.” ### **“You’ve talked a lot about how important connecting with fans is to you. What have some of those interactions been like after shows?”** **Charlie:** “Yeah, recently I’ve really been enjoying talking to fans at the merch area after the show, especially newer fans. I see a lot of people come back and tell me how much they enjoyed the set. Being at the merch table gives me a chance to actually talk to them and make that connection. I think that’s something I’ve really been enjoying—being able to meet and talk with everyone after the show.” ### **“You’ve clearly put a lot of thought into how your music connects with people live. How has the writing process been going behind the scenes?”** **Charlie:** “It’s been going really well! Just before the tour, I took about two months off from doing gigs and went a bit quiet for a while because I was in the studio writing and spending more time on my songs. I can get really vulnerable with the music, and I also do a bit of production myself, so I took everything into the studio and have been working on it there. I’ve actually had Darcy Long involved with my next three songs, and I think those are probably my favorite songs I’ve done so far.” ### **“Not to sound too eager, but do we have a timeline for when we can expect some of this new music?”** **Charlie:** “We do. The next song comes out on October 22, and it’s called "Who Is She." It explores how we move through life and how our brains can sometimes mislead us. The song was inspired by an experience I had with someone, and afterward, I kept thinking I was seeing that person everywhere. In reality, I was simply seeing random people, but my mind kept transforming them into that person. I found it to be such an interesting experience—how your mind can play tricks on you like that—that I really wanted to write about it. I’m glad I did because I’m really proud of the song. It also looks like there’s going to be a music video to go along with it. I’ve got some really cool ideas brewing.” ### **“Your last music video looked incredible. How involved were you in bringing the concept together?”** **Charlie:** “I actually didn’t see it until the day before it was released. I spoke with Grace about the idea behind it, and then she went into the editing room and did her thing. I didn’t see anything beforehand. In hindsight, that could have gone so badly,” _he laughs._ “But we’d talked about it beforehand, and she understood the idea behind the song and what I was looking for. I trusted her with it, and it turned out really well. So, hopefully, the next one will be awesome too!” taken from Youtube ### **“What can you tell me about the other songs you’ve got coming up after ‘Who Is She’?”** **Charlie:** “Hopefully next year, the next two songs will be coming out. They’re still in production at the moment, but they’re songs we play live quite a lot—"Anxiety"" and "Too Late." They’ve both been really popular with the crowd, so I’m excited to get those out and into everyone's ears soon." ### **“Are you planning to take ‘Who Is She’ and the new material on the road as well?”** **Charlie:** “For ‘Who Is She,’ I’ll be heading to the Gold Coast and Brisbane because I’ve noticed on Spotify that I have a lot of listeners in those areas. I feel like my live show is really the main course. You can listen to the songs, but it’s just not the same as seeing them live, and I put so much into the show. I love touring, meeting heaps of different people, and getting to know the fans.” ### **“Have you had the chance to collaborate with other local artists or creators yet? If not, is this something you're interested in?”** **Charlie:** “Not yet, but I’d really like to. I think it would be really cool to connect with other artists and support local projects. That’s something I’m definitely trying to do more of. I’m always like, ‘Send me a DM if you’ve got a project,’ whether it’s a short film you want to use one of my songs in or something else entirely. I’m always looking to connect with other artists. I think it’s really cool when different artistic mediums can come together.” ### **“We’ve covered the big No Cigar show, new music, and what’s coming next. Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to put out into the universe?”** **Charlie:** “Stay tuned because we’re going to be doing more shows. Come out, support your local scene, and buy some merch—it means heaps to everyone involved. There’s a lot of new media coming out as well. Shoot me a message if you’ve got any projects you want me on board for.” * * * Check out **Charlie Farmer** 's music on all streaming platforms and keep an eye out for new music and show announcements coming your way very soon!

Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry Bring Rap/Rock Combo Back to the 2020's
Since the beginning of time _(ish)_ , mankind has attempted to find the perfect balance of rap and rock. Run DMC were some of the pioneers when it came to the concept of combining the genres, but they were doing it way before they invited Aerosmith to join them (hell, both 'Rock Box' and 'King of Rock' have the word 'rock' in their titles). Through the 80's and 90's, it looked like we were starting to perfect the mix. Beastie Boys started out as a hardcore band and has those fingerprints all over their early work. Kerry King of Slayer played on a handful of _Licensed to Ill_ tracks. Public Enemy teamed up with Anthrax, the kind of heavy escalation that more than paved the way for Ice-T to do the same with Body Count. The movement peaked in 1993 with the release of the Judgement Night soundtrack. From there, things went mainstream. Rage Against the Machine carried the torch in the mid- to late 90's. Korn, who were dabbling in hip-hop samples themselves, joined Ice Cube on the extremely successful Family Values tour in 1998. Linkin Park and Papa Roach pushed the boundaries of the sound, leaning into rap-style lyrics over heavy guitars. But like every popular trend that enters pop culture, imitators and knockoffs soon flooded the market, ranging from pretty bad to aggressively terrible. Yes, the 2000s gave us the SUPERB mashup of Jay-Z and Linkin Park's _Collision Course LP_ , but it also gave us 'Butterfly' by Crazy Town. And Limp Bizkit. And Kid Rock pre-country. Then we started calling it "nu-metal." Hed PE and Powerman 5000 were about the time when we decided as a society to maybe just put a lid on this rap/rock thing for the time being. Like all great ideas, we could only stifle the desire to combine rap and rock for so long. And by letting things grow organically, we saw some promising signs. Rico Nasty brings a specific metal/punk energy to modern rap. Death Grips and clipping are also doing trailblazing work in bringing both genres' modern sounds together. The rise of Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly shows that there's even an appetite for rap and pop punk to cross over, as bizarre as that might have sounded just a decade ago. Even the crowds at modern rap shows can rival the moshing and crowdsurfing of even the hardest of hardcore shows. It's at that very intersection of modern rap and hardcore where we find "Hive Mind," the collaboration between **Knocked Loose** and **Denzel Curry**. This song delivers a sonic punch in the face, as all Knocked Loose songs do, but it kicks up to an entirely unthinkable level at the 1:50 mark when Denzel Curry jumps in like a machine gun and tears the roof off. THIS is the best way to mix rap and rock in 2026. It only makes sense to bring this sermon to the masses on the Hive Mind Tour with support from **Superheaven** and **Boundaries**. Even when it comes to rock, this tour made sure to cover a range of different tastes. When you have a crowd made up of people with such potentially different interests, it's important to start with something familiar, which is where the hardcore stylings of **Boundaries** kicked things off. Once the pit was nice and warm, **Superheaven** played through a pretty steady rain to make sure everyone had a chance to catch their breath. Leaning more into the grungey/shoegazey sound of the 90s than the hardcore or rap from the other acts on the bill, having that bit of a palate cleanser and a chance to gather yourself and prepare your body for the chaos to come was a much appreciated respite. * * * Maybe we just needed someone who knew how to bring together the _best_ parts of both genres to really get this rap/rock revival kicking in the mid-2020s. After **Denzel Curry** 's set at the Salt Shed this week, it's hard to deny that he may be the very person to lead the way. If you needed any proof that Curry understands both sides of the rap/rock equation, his setlist was basically a thesis statement: Sixteen songs, a pile of them with rock and punk DNA right there in the title ('BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE' leading the charge), and a crowd ready to slam bodies into each other on one half of the pit and drop it low and twerk on the other (possibly the most impressive genre combo of the evening). There's a version of this tour where Curry is kept at arm's length and politely tolerated to get to the upcoming main course. That is not the version we got, as people were slam dancing and raging from the very first notes of "SKED." "HIT THE FLOOR" got exactly the reaction you'd expect from 5,000 rain-soaked mothers that heard the title as an order rather than a suggestion. The aforementioned "BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE" and "CLOUT COBAIN | CLOUT CO13A1N" have definite punk influences. By the time Curry performed "SUMO | ZUMO" and "STILL IN THE PAINT," the pit was running on its own momentum like one of those bizarre ant death spirals. Then came the closer: a mashup of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" and "Bulls on Parade." Remember how I mentioned Rage carrying the torch through the 90's (I hope so because it was less than 1,000 words ago)? Well, here it was, carried by a guy who was just learning to walk when _Evil Empire_ came out. It's one thing to pay homage to the classic songs; however, Curry was somehow not only able to combine the two in a satisfying way but also made the performance all his own using his own specific cadence rather than attempting a Zach de la Rocha impression. ****DENZEL CURRY**** WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | APPLE MUSIC | SPOTIFY | FACEBOOK * * * Almost three years ago, I reviewed Knocked Loose when they came to Chicago in support of Motionless in White. In that time, the band had somehow stepped up their already impressive and insane game with a grueling tour schedule that had them headlining their own shows and moonlighting as the opener for some little-known up-and-coming thrash metal band called Metallica. All that time on the road has made them sound heavier, urgent, and more relentless than ever. Let's be honest: they didn't need to do anything fancy to justify the price of admission. They could have walked out, played eighteen songs, and gone home, and we would have all gone home happy and aching. Instead, the band that has spent the last few years proving that hardcore can sell out rooms this size put together a set that understood exactly what kind of night it was. The stage was flanked by creepy leafless trees with a massive glowing cross towering over the entire performance like we were all witnesses to some apocalyptic midnight mass in the woods. Their opening run of "Deep in the Willow," "Everything Is Quiet Now," and "Don't Reach for Me" sets the tone immediately, and I use _tone_ in the same way you'd say a dump truck sets a tone when it backs into your living room. Lead singer **Bryan Garris** ' voice has evolved from the high-pitched 'ARF ARF' the band was known for in years past into an actual weapon he can wield onstage, obliterating anyone standing anywhere near a monitor. From there it was a bruising, relentless trip through the catalog, with "Billy No Mates," "Where Light Divides the Holler," and "Blinding Faith" keeping the floor in constant motion. As the rain let up and eventually stopped entirely, the pit took that as a sign to get even more feral, with the band matching and exceeding that intensity from the stage the entire way. And then, near the end, 'Hive Mind' arrived like a goddamn warhead detonating. A song that sounds like a collision on record is somehow even more of one live, with two entirely different performance styles locked into the same engine. The rest of the night was a victory lap, but a deceptive one. "Suffocate" and "Counting Worms" closed out the main set the way a hardcore show is supposed to end, except it wasn't over. Earlier in the night, the band had played "Everything Is Quiet Now" only up to the breakdown before cutting it off, leaving the room hanging. It turns out they were saving the rest of it like the last bite of a particularly exquisite dessert. After "Counting Worms," the band kicked back into the '...Quiet Now' breakdown with the requisite wall of death in tow. I've seen a lot of calculated stage theatrics over the years, and very few of them match the sheer sadism of making a crowd wait an _hour and a half_ to hit the breakdown of a hardcore song. For decades, "rap and rock together" was shorthand for a very specific kind of cringe. It meant wallet chains. It meant somebody's ill-advised red baseball cap (hey, some things never change!). It meant a genre that took the best ideas of two different cultures and mostly made them worse. And for a lot of us (hi, it's me; I was in college for all of it), it was easy to assume the whole thing was a failed experiment we'd all agree to never to discuss again. What makes the Hive Mind Tour work isn't the novelty of the pairing like we got from rap/rock through most of the 2000s. It was that everybody on stage clearly understood both sides of it. **Denzel Curry** didn't wander into hardcore as a gimmick; he's been circling it with a respect that shows up in his song titles and general energy. **Knocked Loose** didn't need a rapper as a novelty for their tour. They just recognized that the right guest makes the heavy hit harder regardless of genre. And when a rapper closes his set with Rage Against the Machine in a monsoon that was about 90 away from a wall of death, the circle that started with 'Rock Box' finally feels closed. So the next time someone tells you that rap and rock don't mix, you have my permission to throw your entire body into them as hard as you think is appropriate. Let them know you picked that one up at the rap/rock show. Just don't forget to pick them back up. You always pick someone in the pit up if they fall down, no matter what genre. The Hive Mind tour continues through the first week of November. Dates and tickets can be found here. ****KNOCKED LOOSE**** WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | APPLE MUSIC | SPOTIFY | FACEBOOK

The heavy music world is descending on Fort Worth, Texas, this coming October 24, 2026, and if you haven't been paying attention, now is the time to start!

Sick New World Is Making Its Texas Debut
**Sick New World** is heading to Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth on Saturday, October 24, 2026, marking the inaugural Texas edition of a festival that has already proven itself as one of the most essential events in heavy music history. Texas Motor Speedway will play host to more than 50 performers across two stages, with gates opening at 11am. One day, one speedway, no excuses to miss this. Honestly, this is no small lineup. This event is not just a casual Saturday at the speedway. As someone who's never caught Sick New World before, I am personally counting down the days and hoping with everything in me that this festival sticks around for a second year. Texas deserves this, and this lineup loaded and ready to hit the proving grounds. * * * ## The Venue: Where Racing Meets Mosh Pits Texas Motor Speedway is no damn joke when it comes to hosting events—it's been a cornerstone of the Dallas-Fort Worth area since opening in 1996, spanning about 1.5 miles and playing home to NASCAR Cups, Craftsman truck series competitions, concerts, and more! For **Sick New World** , that massive infield will become the festival grounds, giving the attendees the kind of open space you simply can't get at a traditional venue. With a capacity well into the tens of thousands and roughly 60,000+ parking spaces out on the property, logistics here will be a different beast than your average show—come prepared, come early, and come ready to cover hella ground between stages. The official map for the festival hasn't been released just yet, but when it does, you'll be able to check it out here. * * * ## The Lineup: Your Newest Scheduling Problem The full Forth Worth lineup includes some insane heavy hitters: **System of a Down** , **Deftones** , **Slayer** , **Ministry** , **AFI** , **Evanescence** , **Underoath** , **Marilyn Manson** , **Clutch** , **Down** , **She Wants Revenge** , **Boy Harsher** , **Wage War** , **Coal Chamber** , **Poison the Well** , **The Prodigy** , **Terror** , **Sunami** , **Knocked Loose** , **Melvins** , **Glassjaw** , **P.O.D.** , **Mastodon** , **Deafheaven** , **Superheaven** , **Kittie** , **Alien Ant Farm** , **Filter** , **Power Trip** , **Norma Jean** , **Failure** , **Lords of Acid** , **Pain of Truth** , **Haywire** , **Violent Vira** , **Sleep Theory** , **Speed of Light** , **Dying Wish** , **Peeling Flesh** , **The Dark** , **Showing Teeth** , **Dead City** , and **The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza** , among others. Draw a deep breath and take some mental notes. Not sure how we're going to fit it all in, but I'm damn sure I'm going to try. * * * ## System of a Down, That's It, That's the Header There’s not much that can be said about **System of a Down** that hasn’t been said already. Every time they come through Texas, it feels like one of the most chaotic events of a lifetime! **Serj Tankian** , guitarist **Daron Malakian** , bassist **Shavo Odadjian** , and drummer **John Dolmayan** are headlining both **Sick New World** dates in Las Vegas and Dallas this year, and this will be a performance you really don't want to miss out on! Excuse me while I dig out my old CDs and spend some real time re-energizing before the festival, because walking into that set underprepared feels genuinely disrespectful to the music. System of a Down, photo courtesy of Live Nation I'm personally thrilled to finally, finally get to experience this iconic band live for the first time in my life. Hearing "Toxicity," "Aerials," and "BYOB" live will be a fever dream (a good one, not a cough syrup-induced one). Growing up with this band blasting in your headphones does something to your soul that you don't truly appreciate until you're an adult trying to explain to someone why "Chop Suey!" still hits exactly the way it did the first time you heard it, when you got in school suspension for printing out lyrics that mentioned "harmful messages" and gave you a brand new appreciation for the written word. _(Shout out, Mrs. Martinez, look at me now!)_ * * * ## Slayer Returns in a Reign of Blood So, last I recall, the California thrash metal masters, **Slayer** , retired from touring back in 2019. They said their farewell, they meant it, we in the metal world accepted it, and life continued rocking on. Then 2026 rolled around, and the 40th anniversary of "Reign in Blood" became too significant to ignore, and well, here we are. **Slayer** kicked off their anniversary run over in Minnesota's Mystic Lake Amphitheater earlier in September of this year—the first time they've performed the whole album since 2014. Fort Worth is one of only a handful of US-based stops where **Tom Araya, Kerry King, Gary Holt** , and **Paul Bostaph** will be blessing us with "Reign in Blood" in its entirety (plus a handful of other masterpieces). You'll be caught in the throes of chaos with your fellow fans as we witness the glory of this monumental record played front to back. This album managed to rewrite every rule about how fast, how heavy, and how uncompromising a metal record could actually be. Slayer, photo courtesy of Live Nation * * * ## I Refuse to Miss a Single Second of Getting Knocked Loose Listen, I need to talk to someone about what happened at Louder than Life this year. It haunts me a little still. When the storm evacuation decided to jumpscare us all, I had already accepted my fate—I'd halve the set at **Knocked Loose** to see **Pierce the Veil,** and I'd make my peace. I knew that I'd need to find a way to run across the venue to hit up **My Chemical Romance** 's stage; however, that would cut into my time. It was a done deal. Standing there mid-set during Pierce the Veil, I was crushed that the rescheduled set times didn't make it so I could witness both sets. I was genuinely pained because **Knocked Loose** is one of the bands where every single moment of the set matters, especially when performing in their home turf. **Sick New World** is my redemption arc. Vocalist **Bryan Garris** , guitarists **Isaac Hale** and **Nicko Calderon** , bassist **Kevin Otten** , and drummer **Kevin Kain** are getting my full undivided attention for whatever time slot they get at the Texas Motor Speedway, and I am already mentally negotiating my schedule around them. They dropped their recent "Hive Mind" single featuring Denzel Curry earlier this year, and both Garris and Hale have been hinting at new music—meaning Fort Worth could come with some surprises on top of everything else. If you've never seen them live, you need to understand that **Knocked Loose** is a full physical commitment. Stretch beforehand. You've been warned. Knocked Loose, courtesy of Facebook * * * ## Atlanta's Finest Nightmare, Norma Jean When I was at Warped Tour earlier this year, I wound up bumping into Norma Jean's photographer, and they'd been hyping up the **Norma Jean** shows ever since. Persistently. Enthusiastically. In the way that people talk about bands they genuinely believe in and love. So here I am, marking my calendar for this show to find out what all the fuss is about. **Norma Jean** has been one of the most important and influential bands in the metalcore space since forming back in 1997. They've survived roughly three decades and more lineup changes than most bands survive in years, with frontman **Cory Putman** and guitarist **Grayson Stewart** anchoring the current lineup. 2026 has been a busy year for them—they were added to Vans Warped Tour and have been on the road consistently all year. Their catalogue runs deep, and their live show runs harder. I'm going in with zero expectations and full trust in my friend who has not steered me wrong yet. Norma Jean, courtesy of Facebook * * * ## Get Your Tickets, Like Now **Sick New World Texas** is a one-day, all-ages event popping up at the Texas Motor Speedway over in Fort Worth on October 24, 2026. Gates are open at 11am, and you can find so many helpful guides on their FAQ section. Only general admission tickets remain, and with a lineup hitting this hard, I'm surprised it isn't sold out yet. Get them over on their website before they're gone for good! Buy Now Texas has been waiting for a festival like this. October 24th is going to prove it was well worth the wait.

Open Every Cage: To The Grave Releases New Album, "Liberation Front"
Humans are said to be the pinnacle species on our planet: we share a common language, advanced technology, and industry. We attempt to make everyday life easier for one another and band together to form memorable cultures, beliefs, and societies._However, at what cost?_ We are not only the most advanced species on the planet, but also _the most cruel and hateful._ Since the dawn of our creation, we have been drawn to inflicting pain upon each other and our environment—bloodshed and war, terraforming Mother Earth, and pulling her roots with machinery and shovels—and _the animals._ Slaughterhouses, where the mass butchering and torture of sentient creatures on land and sea occurs, serve to fill our stomachs, express luxury cuisines, and most of all—to assert dominance. We are the pinnacle of pain, disciples of agony; we are nothing but hate. In all regards, _we are parasites._ This is the ethos of one of Deathcore's most prominent bands in activism, veganism, and brutality: **To The Grave.** Hailing from Sydney, Australia, the five-piece outfit formed in 2010 has built their status through some of the most pummeling riffs, drumming, and ballistic vocal outrage I've ever seen in this damn genre _(I get to listen to a lot in this occupation and have been a fan since 2019—these guys don't fuck around)._ Releasing their fifth full album and debut through **BLKIIBLK** , the band drops **"** Liberation Front,**"** a 10-track beatdown of misanthropy and a call to action for their inflictions on our planet and the saving and survival of the creatures we share the same atmosphere with. The album is unrelenting, uncompromising, and is at your throat throughout its entirety. There is no budging that the message is to liberate animals from their torturers and butchers, and to salvage what's left of the planet we haven't already _fucked up_ beyond repair. We easily justify our horrific acts on other creatures simply because "they're just animals." **To The Grave** argues, hatefully, No— _we are the fucking animals._ * * * ****"Liberation Front"**** Album Art > "GOD HATES YOU ALL" Opening the liberation, "MEAT THE HUMANS" sends us straight into our justly-earned slaughter. Panning beats and 80s horror-like synths breathe into the intro before quickly getting slammed by intricate drumming (**Connor Kingdom**) and severely drop-tuned guitar chugs (**Jack Simioni,** **Nic Webb, Matt Clarke**). This is only the start- the track becomes _hellish:_ kicks firing on a cyclic, guitars hemorrhaging and punishing, and vocalist **Dane Evans** cracking the ground with layered gutturals and high screams. It's a wall of _hate_. The track lays itself within the wake of technical guitar sections picked between impressive quadruple-picked chugs; drums and kicks that feel like they constantly ramp up into higher gear; and vocals that will bleed into audible hardcore mids before terraforming into Simioni's signature hellbound gutturals. The rising, droning synths added make this opening track cinematic and doomed, and the added, distorted sample of **Jack Nicholson's** _"I'm Going To Bash Your Fucking Brains In"_ from 1980's **The Shining** brings it into horrific territory. No forgiveness is found in "NAIL MARY," previously released as a single; the track turns religious dogma into karmic punishment. Enthralled with nasty vocal blasphemy, thrashing tremolo guitars that only breathe between breakdowns, and some of the best showcasing of Kingdom's drumming on the album. The snare bombs and fills are crisp; he levitates the track between grooves and onslaught with cymbal and kick hammering- and not to mention the face I had hearing _the fucking gravity blast_ midway through. The track is a stake to the heart of zealotry and was accompanied by a vengeful music video, showcasing a man nailing _(literally)_ photos of crossed-out faces of men to a wall. As it progresses, we gather that the photos of these men are workers in a slaughterhouse, shown standing in front of the carcasses of dead animals on hooks and racks. The protagonist deems that if "thou shalt not kill" is to be ignored, then it will be ignored just the same for the butchers. If there is a God, then he is easily bendable. On 'NAIL MARY', vocalist **Dane Evans** shares: _“'NAIL MARY' is about how people use religion and god to justify all kinds of atrocities and proclaim dominion over animals. We’re holding a torch (or chainsaw) to any kind of god or follower that demands ritual slaughter with this one and nailing them to the walls.”_ "NAIL MARY" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO * * * > "IN HELL WITH THE REST OF US" **Sensitivity Warning:** _The following track features unpleasant descriptions and a music video, showcasing various forms and video of real-life animal cruelty, including live video of animals being mutilated, bludgeoned, and gutted alive. Knowing this, I encourage you, the reader, to attempt to digest it, watch it, and become better aware of real-life cruelty towards creatures that are happening across the globe. Just because you close your eyes to the horrors doesn't mean they don't happen. Welcome to planet Earth, fuckers. Population: Us._ Further pressing our murderous faces into the mirror, "TORTURE PORN" is a deathcore-styled protest. High-droning synths and rapid-fire instrumentation channel into catchy grooves, while tearing highs throw misanthropic ideals at higher powers that attempt to shut down movements. The uniqueness in the Australian outfit is that the band, in music and in personal lives, actively fights for their beliefs. They attempt education and actions to support a cruelty-free world, and within those attempts, we were given one of, if not the, most horrific lyric music videos. The 3-and-a-half-minute video showcases live videos taken of law enforcement using force and excessive assault on protestors gathered to condemn the abuse, neglect, and torture of animals in captivity. To hone in on this message, the video is filled with a macabre display of various animals, including pigs, cows, sharks, and fish- all being mutilated, bludgeoned, and dismembered on boats and in slaughterhouses with blunt and sharp weapons. I grew up on horror movies filled with various displays of gore, but the music video is extremely unnerving because it is actually real, and _that's the point._ To become better aware of a situation, you must take yourself to its bleakest and most violent corner and simply watch. I encourage you to do the same. "TORTURE PORN" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO Ripping us into wrath-filled riffs, pinch harmonics, and rapid technical drum fills, "EYESTALK ABLATIONS" was one of the latest singles released prior to the album's release. Evans is one of Deathcore's best vocalists it has to offer _(I have a top 3 list, and he's second)_ , showcasing vocal gymnastics of various consistent, stamina-driven gutturals, lashing highs, and brees- and, most unique is around the 1.5-minute mark, he ramps up his voice to emulate what _a fucking chainsaw sounds like when throttled_. The vegan Deathcore band is sonically armed to the teeth in a vein of metal that few can actually match up to. For reference: the song title is a term used for the act of removing the eyestalks of female shrimp by burning, pinching, or cutting them. The eyestalks hold a gland that stops the shrimp from reproducing; once forcibly removed, shrimp therefore breed faster. _Yes, they also feel the pain fully._ "EYESTALK ABLATIONS" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO * * * > "THIS PLACE IS A GASCHAMBER" The album is sonically geared towards anti-human ideals: the belief that we are merely leeches on our planet and its ecosystem, and we deserve total anguish. "LIFE AMONG THE SEPTICS" punishes our humanity, with Evans' mids acting as a form of strangulation- relentless, violent, and _waiting for the light to go out._ The guitars from Simoni, Webb, and Clarke are mixed so that chugs and breakdowns become a wall of onslaught, while higher-toned leads and technical playing come out crisp, audible, and with a certain bite _._ "CALF SLICER" amplifies these guitar tones with almost djenty low-tuned grooves that dance with slam-like, low-end dissonant chords. The added synths and choir-like effects open this track to the world before Evans' pig squeals and Kingdom's chinas just as quickly slam it back into its core. "LIMB FROM LAMB" is dooming and feels like it's slowly crawling its way out of the wasteland, with thrall-acquainted guitar bends and chugs stomping its way alongside drums. Anxious guitar leads build into a bleak-felt breakdown, where the drop and sampled screams of agony shook the very canals of my ears behind headphones- _before it gets fucking slower._ "LIFE AMONG THE SEPTICS" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO "YOU KNOW THE DRILL" rips us back into fast-paced thrashing power chords and tremolo picking and double kicks, while Evans vocally pulls throats out: quickly malforming from disgusting lows, ripping highs, and eerie distorted speaking all in mere seconds throughout the track. Clarke's bass rumbles something unearthly, while Siminoi and Webb play one of the sickest pinch harmonic-infused breakdowns I've heard since**Kublai Khan** _(this one is way better)._ Fading out with echoes and **Evil Dead** -sounding murmurs, we're led into "TERRORFIRE," our first clean, strung track of the album, with a sample of a man speaking in an interview about the atrocities of animal cruelty after discovering what occurs at slaughterhouses and seeing firsthand where his food actually came from. This is a statement track, somber in tone, and points out that what we call 'food' stops becoming 'food' when you see what we do to it while these creatures are still living. _We must be the devil for animals._ Closing out **To The Grave** 's call to open every cage, "THE WORLD IS A SLAUGHTERHOUSE" is cinematic and powerful. Grand open chords between rapid chugs and drum fills, and Evans favors high-pitched screams for its choruses and lashes in chainsaw vocal climbs. Guitar solos rip up and down the fretboard before the track cinematically drags its knuckles up before hastily stomping its way out. * * * "Liberation**** Front**"** is **To The Grave's** most justifiably hateful and most direct collection of tracks the band has produced over their 15+ year career. Being a fan since their first body of work, **"Global Warning"** - the Australian vegan outfit embodies themselves as the karmic revenge for animals and Mother Nature. They seek justice for the creatures tortured and mistreated in slaughterhouses, fishing boats, and farms globally, channeling that outrage into violent misanthropic ideals directed at the human race. The band gives a crash course in reality, which is unique in that, unlike other artists' messages, it's in the defense of others: sentient and pain-feeling creatures who have no way of protecting themselves and are merely victims of a more overwhelming and sinister species. They achieve this through unnatural vocal bludgeoning, viscerally technical and fast-paced riffs and breakdowns, a drummer who has _to have a fucking bionic leg,_ the use of real-life spoken confessions, and unnerving album artwork and video clips showcasing the atrocities the human race inflicts upon the creatures we cohabit the Earth with. The album is intensely heavy and menacing, and it also educates listeners that _Earth has become just another killing floor._ * * * As **Evans** puts it: _“This is our way of establishing order. The band is built around our way of doing things, and to me this title is just waving that flag. These songs are about direct action, open rescue, abolition, and liberation by any means necessary.”_ Catch **To The Grave** with **Crown Magnetar** on their current**** co-headline **"The Sawed Off Suffering"** tour here: Instagram // Facebook // YouTube

The Linda Lindas' second performance in Utah was about leaving a legacy and that artists like them are always welcome. VIAL was also in Utah for the second time, creating an energizing and vibrant atmosphere at the Metro Musical Hall.

The Linda Lindas Claim the Room in Salt Lake City
### VIAL Arriving at one of Salt Lake City's most secluded concert venues might make you think the vibe wouldn’t be energetic or would fail to fire you up. Don’t judge a book by its cover, especially when the music venue is the **Metro Music Hall** featuring **The Linda Lindas.** By the time I arrived, the venue was explosive. **VIAL** was onstage, inciting the vigor needed for the night. Their energy was unmatched. On a Tuesday night, when the week has just started, it’s simply what the crowd demands. **VIAL** is a punk rock band consisting of three people. Their lineup consists of drummer and vocalist **Katie Fischer** , vocalist/guitarist **KT Branscom** , and vocalist/bassist **Taylor Kraemer.** From the photo pit, I wasn't just watching VIAL perform. I was watching three people completely commit to themselves and to the show. Often, the drummer Katie Fischer would challenge the crowd to be louder, creating a constant exchange between the band and the crowd. KT Branscom and Taylor Kraemer seemed to challenge **me** through their constant movement. It is fair to say that no matter how the crowd responded, VIAL gave 200%. They provided so many opportunities to freeze their emotions through my camera and appreciate their musical self-expression. By the time the Linda Lindas arrived, VIAL had already created the energy that would carry through the rest of the night. Instagram * * * ### **The Linda Lindas** Remember a bit of what the setting looks like? You see, when the Linda Lindas arrived, the venue went dark, but the emotion remained elevated. From wall to wall and from floor to ceiling, the noise vibrated the whole venue. The room was a powder keg, vibrating with anticipation from the wait for the band. The crowd got crazy. They were jumping, moshing, and singing, moving with every beat. I could feel the passion coming from both sides. The band was feeding off the crowd and the crowd from the band. If you haven’t heard it yet, one of the songs that stuck out the most to me was “Growing Up," which was released back on April 8, 2022, on the band's debut album also called **"Growing Up."** I invite you to watch the "Growing Up" music video. If you watch it in full, you’ll witness some of what I experienced during their set. But what stood out to me wasn't only the crowd. It was how The Linda Lindas carried themselves on stage. Several times **Lucia de la Garza (** one of the guitarists)**** would jump on the speaker and start dancing, playing the guitar with no sense of danger. Then you'd see **Eloise Wong (** the bassist)**** do the same and swing up the bass to return the excitement the crowd was giving. **Bela Salazar** was low-key with the guitar; however, the way she played it was anything but. Lastly, **Mila de la Garza** kept the drums going while dancing and vibing with Lucia, just having fun together on stage. Watching them move around the stage, it was almost impossible for me to stay behind my camera**.** They weren't just performing their songs; they looked like they were genuinely having a great time. I only wondered how they didn't crash onto each other with how much they were moving. As colorful as their set was, as fun to watch, and melodically pleasing, I couldn’t avoid joining in with the crowd. It almost felt like my body moved by itself. Then they fired into this banger called “Helado de Limon,”**** and I realized that as **The Linda Lindas** are dancing, moving their guitar everywhere, they're simply showing how well adapted they are at mirroring their audience's enthusiasm. There was one other song that stuck out for me, but mostly because of what it transmits. To quote the song, **“No busco tu aplauso ni validacion mi historia la escribo sin tu opinion y quemaste mi paciencia, te ahogaste en mi helado de limon."** I simply love what these lyrics try to say about self-assurance, independence, and moving on from a toxic relationship. I’d like to conclude with this: I had listened to most of the band's music before photographing their sets but seeing them live blew me away. I insist that anyone who loves their music but has never seen them in person attends soon. Even if you are the type that likes to only stream music, I am sure you’ll start loving live concerts if you attend theirs. Instagram

Bayside Came Back to a Room Full of Friends
**Bayside** brought their Fall Tour 2026 to Anthology in Rochester, NY, on September 22, 2026, with **Driveways** and**Grave Secrets** in full support. The Queens-based Rock band delivered exactly the kind of show you hope for from a band that's been doing this for as long as they have: loud, emotional, tight, and completely invested from the first song to the last. * * * **Grave Secrets** Los Angeles, CA. based**Grave Secrets** kicked off the show at 7:30 PM. If you haven't heard them before, they play a really cool mix of fast, heavy punk and emo rock. It's the kind of energy you get at a basement hardcore show, but with catchy choruses you can actually sing along to. It's loud and heavy, but the melodies stick in your head. The band packed a lot of punch into their nine-song performance and set the vibe for the night. For those fans who showed up early, they got to see a band definitely on the rise! Members:**Vinny Morales** - lead vocals/rhythm guitar (Co-founder), **Kevin Gonzalez** - lead guitar(Co-founder),**Carlos Bayona** - bass, **Kevin Casteñeda** - drums Setlist: "Out the Mud", "On My Way!", "I Wish", "Bad Blood", "Cherry", "Pictures", "Anxious", "S2L", and "Mood Ring". Instagram * * * **Driveways** **Driveways** , a pop-punk and post-hardcore trio from Saugus, Massachusetts, took the stage next. They played a hard-hitting 10-song set featuring their most popular Spotify tracks. Their fan base has grown far beyond their New England roots, and many were there tonight. Late September was the perfect time of year to hear their spooky, Halloween-themed songs like "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" and "Melancholy." Much of the band's music has this fitting autumn-like feel. The band played tight, though there were some long pauses between songs. At one point, frontman**Pat Finnegan** casually took a sip of water and joked about how smoothly the band transitions between songs, making the crowd laugh. About midway in the set, Pat announced, > Our full-time bassist, his name is**Derek** , couldn't make it for this entire run. So we have **Tom** filling in for us tonight. Can you guys give it up for my friend Tom? He did this on short notice, and he's the man. He's in a band called **The Wise Man's Fear**. I suggest checking them out. I'll shut up. This next song is called "Lights On Long Island". As fans cheered, Driveways continued laying down more favorites like "Skulls and Flowers" and "UFOs in the Sky," - the band kept fans singing along, and so every hand was followed by thrusting high in the air. The last song of the set, "October Forever," was definitely a fan favorite! As the band exited the stage, the final lyrics stuck in my head: "_My heart is turning cold with the weather. October Forever, I'm over the terror. I'm part of it now_." Members: **Pat Finnegan** - vocals/guitar, **Ryan Passariello** - drums/backing vocals, and **Thomas Barham** - bass through 10/04/2026; fill-in for **Derek Serino** - bass Setlist: "Are You Afraid of the Dark?", "There for a Reason", "Melancholy", "Skeletons", "Lights on Long Island", "Skulls and Flowers", "Unseen", "UFOs in the Sky", "Skeptic", and "October Forever". Instagram * * * **Bayside** After a brief intermission, **Bayside** took the stage to a roar of applause from the now-full venue. The genre-bending punk rock/Emo band that formed in Queens, NYC, in 2000 has had a lengthy career, with 9 albums to date. The current lineup of frontman **Anthony Raneri** /guitar, **Jack O'Shea** /guitar, **Nick Ghanbarian** /bass, and **Chris Guglielmo** on drums has been together for over 20 years now, _and that's impressive._ I am vaguely familiar with their music, but while reading up on them, I was excited to see them perform live, and they did not disappoint! From the start of the show, what really stood out to me was how good they sound live- _actually better than the records._ Jack O'Shea's guitar work really struck a chord _(pun intended)_. His early heavy-metal influences shine throughout. I caught an **Iron Maiden** -like vibe in the dual-guitar attack. Listen closely, and you'll hear detailed layers woven behind the lyrics. Great stuff! The setlist opened with material spanning Bayside's catalog, from "Big Cheese**"** and "Already Gone" to "They're Not Horses, They're Unicorns," "Duality," "Pigsty," and "Montauk." What really stood out, though, was how much fans love Bayside and how much the band loves their fans. Rochester showed up ready to sing every word, and it seemed to feed right back into the band. You could feel that connection throughout the entire set. In the first pause of the show, **Nick** tells fans, "Bayside was the first ever show in this venue. However, long ago? What year was it that this place was opened?" **Jack** responds, "It was 2015 (September 18, 2015, to be exact). We were doing a show in this venue." Fans go wild! **Jack** shares, "We played in 2004 (December 16, 2004, is the exact date), I think; we played with **My Chemical Romance** at Water Street. Anyone see that? I was informed today that that show cost $25. You missed it." The fans cheer. **Anthony** asks the crowd, "Who's from Rochester? Is Rochester actually in the house?" (The crowd cheers). "Okay, I wasn't sure what to expect, honestly, because Buffalo's probably here too. Right?" (More cheers erupt). "More Rochester than Buffalo- was not expecting that; Rochester showed up." Anthony shares, "I grew up in downstate, and my knowledge of upstate New York geography is limited to wherever there's a SUNY school." (The crowd laughs). "That's about it. So let's see how far we can stretch my geography." He actually asked where fans were from, and the responses were statewide and beyond! **Anthony** tells fans, "All right, well, it's been about two years or so since our last record came out. It's called "_There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive"._ Do you guys know that one? Do you guys jam on that one? It's free, no excuses anymore. When our first records came out, I used to ask people if they bought it yet. I don't have to ask that anymore; now you just go, just listen to it. It's free. All right, well, this next song is on that new record. It's called "Castaway"". The band played through the next songs, "Masterpiece," "Prayers, "Existing in a Crisis (Evelyn)." **Nick** pauses and speaks to fans as Anthony straps on his acoustic guitar, "So thank you, guys, for singing. You know, we're playing old stuff, we're playing new stuff, and everything in between, and I'm noticing that every single person in here knows all the words to every song. Right?" (Pointing to the crowd as they cheer). "Well, that means a lot to us because we don't get to come back to Rochester to play the old stuff unless you guys listen to the new stuff, and thank you, guys, for doing that. Thank you !" Anthony slowly plays the intro to "It Don't Exist," then pauses and looks down at the fans. "Did she say yes? Oh, hell yeah, congratulations! Give it up for my friends who just got engaged. We're all invited to the wedding. Congratulations, you guys. That's fucking awesome. This song is for you two." A feel-good moment, and the fan connection is real! The band told fans they'd just finished a 10th album, set for release next year, and the crowd cheered! Up next, they delivered excellent versions of "Landing Feet First," "Mary," "Go to Hell," and "Monster." The energy in the room was ramping up in anticipation of the final song choices. "Sick, Sick, Sick" and "Blame It on Bad Luck" hit hard as fans sang along with the band. For a moment, **Anthony** pauses and reflects, "Thank you, Rochester. I lost my best friend two days ago, and he would want me to tell you to take care of each other, to follow your dreams, and never to let anything fucking hold you down. This song is for my friend **Chad Gilbert**(**New Found Glory** -_RIP 09 20, 2026_). I love you. You guys take care of each other. Have a good night. Thank you very much!" Closing out the set with an incredible version of "Devotion and Desire!" What an amazing show; I was blown away and left the venue as a new fan of the band! Members:**Anthony Raneri** - lead vocals, rhythm guitar; **Jack O'Shea** - lead guitar/ backing vocals, **Nick Ghanbarian** - bass/backing vocals, **Chris Guglielmo** - drums/percussion Bayside setlist: "Big Cheese", "Already Gone", "They're Not Horses", "They're Unicorns", "How to Ruin Everything (Patience)", "Duality", "Pigsty", "Montauk", "Castaway", "Masterpiece", "Prayers", "Existing in a Crisis (Evelyn)", "It Don't Exist", "Landing Feet First", "Mary", "Go to Hell", "Monster", "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Blame It on Bad Luck", "Devotion and Desire". SFINX brings us another great collab song with the release of the track "Tragic," featuring Grant Dawson and Michael Bohn.

Collabs Are Done Best In Trios; The Release Of "Tragic"
Do you love a good trio brought together by music itself? We were just blessed by **SFINX** , the cat-faced masked drummer, featuring **Grant Dawson** , solo artist and producer, and **Michael Bohn** , the vocalist of Issues. On the 23rd of September, they graced us with the release of their collab single, "_Tragic._ " While SFINX has done some mean collabs over his time on the scene, "_Tragic_ " is one of my personal favorites so far. This song was so well done, from the production to the transition between the clean and harsh vocals. Some parts in the chorus even hit a more melodic twinge before Bohn comes slamming back in. SFINX really ties it all together by being able to match the lighter and heavier moments while making the transitions between the two of them. * * * "Tragic" Single Cover Art * * * "_Tragic_ " addresses the heavy topic of mental health. With lyrics like "_Give me love, give me something I can feel / I'm not enough, and I never was at all / Now I'm on the edge of breaking / It's isolating_ " and "_Never really knew that you had it / Going up in smoke, it's tragic / I can't wait for you / I'm sitting in silence,_ " this track is a beautifully done piece on what it's like to have to leave someone that wasn't good for you. Diving into the feelings that come from needing to go but wanting to stay, this track is a great representation of that inner turmoil. This song would honestly be killer in some movies or shows, especially in scenes where the characters are dealing with relationship issues. Seeing it played live would be a great experience, too. It feels like one of those songs that really seals the moment, especially when the scene is set right for it in media or on the stage. * * * Photo Credit: Facebook * * * I can see this single really taking off and doing well in the alternative scene, and I do hope that I see it get going! With all three of the talented artists on this track together, I don't see why it wouldn't. Between the choking riffs, the heavy-hitting drum playing, synths in combination with the riveting dual vocals, this track feels full and well-rounded. It's satisfying and still leaves you wanting more, much like most songs that SFINX puts out. He's also the king of the best collabs. I am looking forward to the next collab or even solo song from SFINX. All in all, I believe this track is one that is probably one of my top releases of the year, too! It's one that not only strikes home, but is one that I hope to experience live as well. I know for sure it's made its way onto a couple of my playlists; you all should do the same! * * * Photo Credit: Grant Dawson * * * > Meet the Collaborating Artists **SFINX -** Drummer **Grant Dawson -** Vocalist, Producer **Michael Bohn -** Vocalist * * *

Domain Expansion: "Rage!" - Debut Single Release By Trap Metal Artist, VanillaVoid
Pure anger, in its rarest form, is as destructive as it is cleansing. The purging of one's suffering through aggression has always been seen as cathartic, just, and most of all _truthful._ Through **VanillaVoid** , their wrath will be righteous. Residing in Tehran, Iran, the anonymous VanillaVoid adapts the shaking of hands between metal's teeth-armed instrumentation and dark trap's gloomy beats and samples, inspired by the likes of **ScarLxrd** , **NF** , **CorpseHusband** and Nu-Metal giants **Linkin Park** and **Korn.** VanillaVoid gathers music's more aggressive materials and proceeds to build- _and be damned, for they have come._ Produced by **BlackFire Productions,** the debut single **"RAGE!"** is the anthem to 'enough is enough'. Crisp beats, samples, and high-tuned melodies are tethered by downtuned guitars and drums, with fast-delivered rapping while a rage-filled chorus chant dogpiles on top of it. Released just a mere two weeks ago, the track has miraculously climbed to thousands of streams and listens, a rarity for an underground artist's first debut. Genre mixing is not a new revolution, but when artists cross the wires and entangle them just right, the art takes on a life of its own. Accompanied by an anime-inspired visual lyric video by **Hamoon Moradiyan** of**VisualBladesStudio** , "RAGE!" sets itself up as a welcomed addition in the Trap-Metal genre. * * * "RAGE!" COVER ART > "RAGE! RAGE! RAGE! RAGE!" The track opens with high-pitched melodies over a distorted sample, before quickly expanding into a harsh vocal chanting "RAGE! RAGE!" fueled chorus alongside drop-tuned guitar chugs and bends. There is no settling in for this one- we're _dumped straight into the meatgrinder._ The single's recurring chorus is as catchy as it is direct, with VanillaVoid commanding the lashing out against their opposition as they go down the names on their hit list. The metal-inspired chorus diminishes and bleeds into trap-inspired melodies and 808s during the verses, with Void's rapping levitating between slower, pitch-shifting forms before stepping on the gas to deliver faster, more lyricist-style flows. What's unique is the blending of several genres within Hip-Hop, as seen with artists like **Bones** ,**Night Lovell** , and **Killstation** , where the vocal cadence is slower, drawn out, and more groove-based. In opposition to the more aggressive names of **ScarLxrd** , **Logic** , and**NF** , the cadence becomes more rapid, on the offensive, and without breathing room. VanillaVoid finds themselves in between both, flow-switching and pitch-shifting their rhythms seamlessly, but retaining angst amongst both worlds. * * * > "Blood And Guts Splatter On The Pavement!" When asked about the debut, VanillaVoid stated, > I wrote "RAGE!" in 2023. I'm a very, very angry person, and I wrote it as a message to everyone who's attempted to hold me and put me down. Family, the haters on social media. At the time, I was in a toxic relationship with a producer who was supposed to produce my music, but never did. I wasn't allowed to do anything for over 3 years, except write songs. The message is to release your rage; my writing is cathartic, and I wrote it with the full intent to have crowd chants during the track. The track speaks for itself: the nervous system in our bodies is geared towards fairness- where, if an injustice is inflicted upon us and if left without equal punishment for the inflictor, the brain will fire off neurons of anger and wrath until the conflict is correctly resolved. Trap-Metal harbors this trait easily, with Hip-Hop's knack for stepping on the throats of those who cross us, and Metal's biodome of aggression that lashes out against societal injustice in the form of _fucking assaulting one another_ in a public setting. Following the verses that bring VanillaVoid's inflcitors _to their damn knees_ - the bridge introduces several call-and-response crowd chants. Void criticizes their haters as snakes, hollow, and without purpose, while a crowd is heard yelling such lines back one after the other. The uniqueness of crowd vocals is that it allows a backdrop of mob mentality. A call to arms, a rally, a _'We Are Legion'_ moment. We as people enjoy an 'us vs them' belief system; someone has done us wrong in some way, and someone has to pay for it. _Our name is VanillaVoid, for we are many._ * * * > "I'm Going On A Rampage!" "RAGE!" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO The accompanying music video by **Hamoon Moradiyan** of**VisualBladesStudio** is as mesmerizing as it is violent. Utilizing clips of several popular anime such as **Dragon Ball Z** , **Death Note** , **Hellsing** , and **Chainsaw Man-** the visual lyric video is macabre, featuring the animations' more violent moments. During the crimson red visuals, we witness bloodbaths, the loss of limbs, life, and hope. There's a growing use of anime in modern music's repertoire, between merch and visuals, simply for its no-holds-barred violence but also for its honest storytelling. These characters and their abilities may be exaggerated, but the grief, rage, and responses to the world they provide are as flesh and bone as you and I. The visual lyric video is fitting in its angst and emotion, but it's very appealing to look at if you're like me and take your art with drips of _absolute violence_. VanillaVoid taps into a vein of Trap-Metal that balances both genres without outshining the other. Seen as early as the 90s up to the present day with **Limp Bizkit** , **Body Count** , **Tech N9ne** ,**** and**ScarLxrd** , artists like this are musical chemists. Dosing their love for Hip-Hop and Metal in an atmosphere that utilizes not just bludgeoning instrumentals, but the vocalist also being as, if not more, merciless. Shifting between rapid-fire lyrics, harsh vocals, and grooving vocal cadences, Void is a welcomed artist armed to the teeth in the Trap-Metal genre. As the first debut release for an artist, "RAGE!" quickly is gaining online attraction, and is already climbing its own ladder, and VanillaVoid will climb up it on the very backs of their enemies. _Domain Expansion: Rage, fuckers._ > @vanillavoidz InstagramCreate an account or log in to Instagram - Share what you’re into with the people who get you.InstagramVanillaVoidI write songs *_*YouTube

No Love Steps Into His Own Spotlight
**No Love For The Middle Child** is everywhere, whether you realize it or not. The musician, producer, and multi-instrumentalist has been behind the scenes helping to create tracks for (and with): mgk, Mod Sun, Sueco, Zero 9:36, Set It Off, and many more. But behind all of those credits is an artist with a story of his own. His solo work puts his musicianship front and center. Moving effortlessly between instruments and genres, he brings raw emotion and a genuine love for the craft to every song. His latest single, "Guardian Angel," is a perfect example of that emotion. Written on a flight while touring with mgk, the song showcases his versatility (and vulnerability!) while exploring the loneliness of being on the road. The lyrics are a reminder that even when you’re out living your wildest dreams, the distance between you and the people you love can be the hardest part of the journey. We had the honor of sitting down with No Love recently to discuss genre vs emotion, what he's learned from collaboration, and what he's most looking forward to on his upcoming tour with Beauty School Dropout. * * * ### You’ve worked across so many genres. At this point, do you even think in terms of genre anymore, or just about the emotions and stories? Emotions and stories definitely guide the most; finding the right sounds to compliment it comes second a lot of the time. However, I do sit down and nerd out by myself in the studio, and being able to mix sounds is big. Working on sound design on your own, void of genre, allows you to find something special you can often present to artists after. ### What do you think you’ve learned from moving between so many different musical environments that you wouldn’t have learned by staying inside one genre? The biggest difference I’ve experienced is workflow. Some artists write over pre-made beats, some take what you make together and work on it over time alone, while others freestyle and find the lyrics in real time in the room. I’m thankful I’ve gotten to see so many workflows and be able to find space in each one. ### Is there a collaboration from your career that changed the way you approach music, even if it wasn’t necessarily the biggest or most visible credit for your resume? Working with Willow changed the way I approach music. It really hit me at a time in life where I was almost valuing quantity over quality, trying to get my feet off the ground. Watching the way Willow made music was so free and creative, and it just reminded me that any song could change your life if you give it your all. ### At this point in your career, what does “No Love For The Middle Child” mean to you beyond being a name? No Love for the Middle Child represents who I am. The little “no love” character was the first tattoo I ever got. It was a way for me to stick to something and feel accountable. I feel like I carry that energy with me. PHOTOS PROVIDED COURTESY OF BLACK PANDA PR ### After spending so much time helping shape other music for other artists, what changes when the music is completely yours? The biggest change is how personal it is. When I work with other artists, my goal is to make something that truly represents them, something that I’d be excited to hear as a fan of them but also be a vessel to channel what’s going on in their world. When I make my own music, all that energy is channeled inward, which is a dramatic switch. ### Your solo music feels deeply personal. Is it harder to be vulnerable as the artist than it is as the producer? 100% - being vulnerable as an artist takes a lot of courage because once you write something down/record it, it becomes real. It’s therapeutic but revealing. ### You’re known for being a multi-instrumentalist. Is there one instrument you always reach for first when you’re creating? I find myself reaching for a guitar because it’s easy to take it anywhere. I used to write songs in my room as a kid for fun, so I get transported there when I do it. ### What’s one song you’ve worked on in any capacity that you think deserved way more attention than it got? I have a song called “Broken Wings” that I feel like could have a moment one day. It’s one of the few songs I’ve made that I can play in any room and feel proud of. Something about it, I don’t know, but if someone asked me to show them a song of mine, I’d pick that one. ### When people walk away from one of your shows, what do you hope they understand about you that they might not get from simply listening to your music? I hope they see a student - someone with nothing but respect for the craft. I play a lot of instruments during the show and am constantly practicing/producing on my own, trying to sharpen those tools. ### You were just announced as a special guest for Beauty School Dropout’s 2026 U.S. Tour. What are you most excited about for that tour? I’m excited to be back on the road for my project! Getting to see everyone and play some new songs will be a blast. The BSD guys are great, so hanging every day will be awesome. ### When you look at everything happening right now for you, does it feel like the culmination of everything you’ve been building, or does it feel like you’re finally just getting started? I feel like I’m just getting started. I’m very thankful for my journey so far, but I know how much work it took to get here, so I know there’s a long way to go. * * * 🖤 INSTAGRAM // YOUTUBE // TIKTOK // SPOTIFY // APPLE MUSIC

Even extreme elements to the point of schedule upheaval couldn't derail the best weekend in Chicago rock music.
musicscenemedia.com
A Riot Fest that Sucks is Still Better than 99% of Things You Could Be Doing
This guy knows what's up. "Riot Fest sucks" has long been the festival's official slogan, slapped across countless t-shirts and social media comments for years now. Personally, I feel like it's the perfect tagline for the very online world that we all live in. If you just pay attention to what you read on Twitter and Facebook and Reddit, Riot Fest not only sucks, but (to put it scientifically) sucks _hard_. Not the specific headliners you would personally select? BULLSHIT! Any minor scheduling conflicts over the span of three days and five stages? CONSPIRACY AGAINST ME BY THE SCHEDULE MAKER! If it doesn't rain, it's too hot. If it rains, it's too wet. If you trip and scrape your knee, why doesn't Douglass Park have built-in pillows? The good news? We don't live online, and live isn't a game of Strat-O-Matic baseball where you use predetermined statistics to determine whether something was a success or not. For an event like Riot Fest, you need boots on the ground (literally, and we'll get to that in a minute). You need to be amongst the people, sucking up the dust on the hottest September dates and huddling for warmth once in a decade when it can drop into the 50's at night. This year's Riot Fest crowd was rewarded for touching grass with maybe some of the worst weather that we've seen. Rain throughout the night on Saturday made Sunday an absolute mud bowl with some of the worst conditions possible. But outside of the weather conditions, everything else was up to the fest's usual high bar. * * * ### **The Headliners and Performances We Deserved** When the headliners for this year's Riot Fest were mentioned (Twenty One Pilots, Tool, Pierce The Veil), there were a lot of confused reactions to TOP's inclusion, which always confused me. On paper, they literally check every single box you would want for a top-line act, from popularity to critical acclaim to fanbase obsession to stage production. Sure, they may not throw massive crunchy riffs behind every song, but Riot Fest has a long history of headliners that aren't specifically hard rock (Beck, St. Vincent, Postal Service/Death Cab for Cutie, and The Cure just within the last three years alone). Honestly, I feel like it's a lot of noise from a small contingent that hasn't accepted that time comes for all of us, and the Foo Fighters and Slayers and Green Days of the world aren't going to be able to keep coming back forever, and new blood has to step up some time. Like anyone could have predicted, all that talk turned out to be meaningless as TOP completely crushed their Friday night set with all the energy and chaos they bring to their own headlining gigs. And in a lot of ways, their performance was mirrored by Pierce the Veil on Sunday night, although during much wetter and cooler conditions. Both were stepping into the Riot Fest anchor position for the first time, and both had no problems filling those shoes. Sandwiched in between the two was perhaps one of the most unique Tool shows in recent memory. Due to potential lightning in the area, Saturday's Riot Fest schedule got shortened by three hours, squashing what should have been a 90-minute set from 8:30 - 10:00 to 6:00 - 7:00. So Tool played their entire set before the sun went down for the first time in who knows how many decades. Instead of his usual crazy makeup/costume combo, Maynard James Keenan told the audience he didn't have time for all that, instead performing in a simple button-down shirt tucked into jeans. Cut down to just 60 minutes, the band tore through songs from every one of their albums, from 'Stinkfist' opening both the set and the mosh pits to Aenema closing things out as the first rains started to soak the grounds. ### **Age is Nothing But a Number** For a festival that tends to skew both heavy and young, there was a surprising contingent of veteran acts that look like a who's who at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction: Patti Smith, Nas, Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Pixies, Morissey, Elvis Costello...all not only present, but absolutely kicking ass. Not only did all of these acts hold their own against their younger contemporaries, but holy shit, did any of you see Patti Smith?? 79 years old and still singing with the clarity and ferocity of someone a quarter of her age. And man, I may not agree with Morrissey on a lot of things, but the man can absolutely SING. Wearing a t-shirt of himself was a nice touch as well. Possibly trumping them all as the Buzzed About Act of the Weekend was William Shatner at 95 years of age debuting his heavy metal band, The Fuckers. Covering metal standards like Ace of Spades and Enter Sandman in his spoken word Shatner cadence more than actually singing, the man was sharp as a tack and funny as hell and clearly having the time of his life. He mentioned that The Fuckers' debut album will come out some time this holiday season. ### **Who Has The Buzz??** Every year there are those bands who blow their audience away so much, you feel like _everyone_ is talking about them for the rest of the day. Between sets. In line for drinks. Outside the water stations. "Did you see XXX?" On Friday that title belonged to Riot Fest veterans Foxy Shazam, whose massive stage presence paired perfectly with the Radical Stage's cozy atmosphere to really blow the minds of everyone in attendance. Saturday absolutely belonged to Quebec's very own musical aliens, Angine de Poitrine, a band who had a bigger crowd at 3:00 in the afternoon than most bands have after the sun goes down. Microtonal weirdness was a big hit with the Riot Fest crowd. Sunday seemed to be buzzing about Shatner, Haywire, and Bowling for Soup...at least as much as the crowd could be buzzing about much on Sunday. Which brings us to... ### **PUDDLE OF MUD SURPRISE APPEARANCE** I don't care if everyone is making that joke, the lowest-hanging fruit of all time. Anyone who had to endure Sunday at Riot Fest gets to use it as much as they want with total immunity. That's how bad the mud got. I hesitate to even call it mud. I've dealt with mud in my life. Mud is manageable. This was not manageable, with the ground turning into more and more of a soup every hour that passed. So how did we make lemonade out of those particular cold and sticky lemons? By giving up any attempt at staying clean and/or dry and rocking out as we normally would: Once your shoes are done for, there's a lot of freedom in the world of a muddy music festival. The most pits for Arms Length and Mom Jeans became absolute spectacles. Hearing The Format cover Stone Temple Pilots or Alanis Morissette sing _any_ song in a torrential downpour can be a truly spiritual experience. Getting sick? Finding mud in your home for the next week? Those are tomorrow's problems when today is all about having a Riot. That's the deeper point in all of this. We can say Riot Fest sucks because we know very well that it doesn't suck. And even when things suck as bad as they did on Sunday, it's not so much Riot Fest sucking as things sucking in the proximity of Riot Fest. And what does it say that the music gods can throw the absolute worst conditions possible out there and it's still one of the most memorable and fun events of the entire year? * * * ### **Ready to Suck in 2027?** Tickets for next year's Riot Fest are on sale here for a limited time.

Fall In Love With ME. Today, "All Good Things" Album
**ME.** is a band that is formed by the founding members of **Taking Back Sunday** , yet transcends their prior work together with their new project. On the 24th of July, ME. released their debut album _All Good Things,_ and of course I had to do a follow-up on the full album as I reviewed their first single release, "Special _,_ " and I was not let down at all. _All Good Things_ really gave us all the good things an album needs to showcase what this band is truly capable of. It gives us fun jams like "Violent People", slower love songs like "Big Smiles", down to a great little intro piece to the album. This album reminds us that ME. is its own body of work and deserves its own space in music. * * * "All Good Things" Album Artwork * * * This album could not have flown into my top album releases of 2026 any faster than it did. One playthrough was all it took and even before the time duration of the album was up, I was sold on how much I really loved it. It's fun and keeps a depth to the songs that scratches the need for even the fun tracks to come with a deep meaning. It has a mix of Midwest emo and old-school pop-punk vocals that is really a nice touch to go along with the lyrics that they have going. It has that feel that the band is playing it right in front of you when you play the album off a DSP, and that is an element of music that I really love and hope to hear more of again. I just know the set lists for shows based around this band are a great time based on the sound from _All Good Things_ alone! * * * * * * Some of my personal favorite songs off the album are "Bloodsport", "Violent People", and "Special". Two of them are more on the fun-sounding side, and the other is a little more on the side of being a more emotionally driven track. Hearing "Special" as a part of a whole concept is a really great experience too as I got to hear it without any other influences from the new project and then again now as a part of the whole. Hearing it in the flow of an album adds to the depth that I loved from ME. in the beginning! * * * Photo Credits: Instagram * * * ME. keeps me on the edge of my seat with their new releases, as each one feels more like a song I needed in my life than the next. It's not only relatable music but the kind that can make you cry and dance along at the same time. At the very least, you'll be screaming along with every word to each track. This is an album you'll need for your car jams and your sad playlists. Hell, you can even send "Big Smiles" to your crush, so this album is versatile in playlisting uses. No matter the reason or if you even need one, you should go listen to _All Good Things_ by ME. now and you'll see what I am saying. Fall in love with ME. today! * * * Photo Credits: Amber Patrick * * * > Meet the members of the band ME: **Mark O’Connell** - Drummer **Eddie Reyes** - Guitarist **Mike Jansen** - Vocalist **Neal Amiruddin** - Bassist * * * ME.'s IG ME.'s Website

"Flatline" is the perfect mix of metalcore and hardcore influence to be a fun, high-energy hit.
musicscenemedia.com
Of Virtue's Hit "Flatline" Has Been Stuck On Repeat
**Of Virtue** is a four-piece metalcore band from Lansing, Michigan. Known for their melodic hooks and elements that are based in hardcore, this band slams in with their hit single "Flatline". They dropped this hit back on the 28th of August, and it has been stuck on repeat on my playlist and in my head ever since! It's a fun, heavy party hit in the way that it can be blared for the meaning or just to jump around to. This song is easily a hit that with the high energy chorus and fun verses that keep you engaged throughout the whole song - one of the core talents the band Of Virtue has! * * * * * * The chorus is super catchy with lines like "_Sick, sick, sick of my mind / Don't tell me I'm fine / I'm running out of time, caught in a flatline / Fight, fight, fight for my life / I'd kill to survive_ " that get caught in your head for days are what help make this song the banger that it is. It hits hard and heavy but keeps a more accessible tone, since there isn't much vocal harshness, making it more radio-friendly and is more media sync-friendly! Of Virtue really nailed it with this song, as they have with many others! I think this is one of my favorite singles to come out as a precursor to their new album _Death Of The Altar_ that is set to come out on the 2nd of October. * * * "Death Of The Altar" Album Cover Art * * * This band has a sound that is going to help them climb to anywhere that they want to end up. This single, along with the others off the _Death Of The Altar_ album and their prior works such as "Chained," features the band **Descape** and "Don't Kill Me _,_ " a song they feature on from the band **Chaosbay**. "Cannibals" is also a really fun single from their earlier discography that you should check out. "Flatline" is a great introduction song to Of Virtues as well. The catchy beats and lyrics will have you two-stepping as you yell along will sell the band for you if you don't love them already. "Flatline" was co-written alongside **Lee Albrecht**(**Bilmuri** ,**The Devil Wears Prada** , etc.) and**Evan McKeever** (**Starset** , **Koe Wetzel** , etc.) so you can only guess why this track goes so hard. * * * Photo Credits: Jeremy Coutu * * * If you're still on the fence about if you should give "Flatline" a listen then I hope that knowing that this banger should be in some action films, rebellion scenes, and even in some killer supernatural-based works would take those media pieces and excell them through the roof. I really hope that this track takes off! I am really looking forward to the _Death Of The Altar_ album as well! Mark your calendars for the release day, October 2nd! * * * Photo Credit: Alex Bemis * * * > Meet the members of the band **Of Virtue** : **Tyler Ennis** – Lead vocals **Damon Tate** – Guitar, co-lead vocals **Michael Valadez** – Guitar **Ryan Trinh** – Drums * * * Of Virtue's IG Of Virtue's Website

No line outside, probably because I hadn’t vacated my bunker until a half hour after doors opened, but the marquee was alight. It ran ‘Flood Relief Benefit Tonight: Dizgo and Hyryder.’ Two weeks had passed since the floodwaters receded from the streets of Broad Ripple, and yet volunteers still roved the neighborhood picking up detritus and removing downed trees and power lines. The borough came together in the wake of an all-out disaster, but righting these wrongs takes cash, and you have to raise that gap somehow. So here we were, ready to rock and drink for the benefit of Broad Ripple, with all of tonight's proceeds being sent to the cleanup effort. With that philanthropic thought in mind, I entered the venue. I made my way immediately down into the pit, which was surprisingly empty considering the show was due to start any moment. I hung around, feeling the mushrooms I had taken slowly kick in, and considered if I should make a break for the bar. Too little too late, as the moment I turned to make my way to the drink counter, a flood of freaks, hippies, and dead heads rushed into the pit, trapping me in an all-encompassing wall of flesh. Some kind folks from the Broad Ripple Village Association came out to talk about the floods, the response, and to remind us that we were drinking for charity tonight. With that, it was on; Hyryder came out. Hyryder is Indiana’s premier Grateful Dead cover band. You can find these wild cats cruising around the state playing shows with the same vigor the Dead once had. Tonight would be no exception to this. The band shook the house until it threatened to come down, jamming so hard they peaked the PA not once but a whopping three times, causing every speaker in the house to screech and prompting them to abandon their earpieces after presumably blowing their own eardrums out. Ignoring the theatrics of the band nearly frying the Vogues sound system, they sounded fantastic. Their tone was on par with so many bootleg Grateful Dead concert recordings, and the good ones at that, that I have managed to collect. Their set list was full of hits, including a rendition of “Tomorrow is Forever," the classic Dolly Parton tune which the Dead famously covered, in honor of her passing. These dudes know how to work an audience; several times throughout the show I made direct eye contact with their bassist. He would smile at me and nod, letting me know he knew that I could see his aura radiating off him in sporadic bursts of sacred geometry and that if anywhere was the proper place to find yourself in such a condition, this was it. The audience was in motion from the first note to the last, boogieing and grooving to the hot licks that Hyryder had to lay down for us. After a handful of jams which spanned the Dead's discography from “Morning Dew” to "Truckin'," they unfortunately had to leave us. The pit thinned out slightly, and the drugs bestowed me with the clairvoyance necessary to navigate my way out. Somehow this led to me standing at the drink counter ordering two tall boys from a bartender whose face was too difficult to look at. In the blink of an eye, I found myself underneath the Vouge's balcony playing Edward 40 hands by myself, waiting for the headliner to come out. Around the time my first drink ran dry, Dizgo took the stage. My personal favorite jam band, Dizgo, is a legendary group in my hood. These guys dominate the psychedelic scene; you can’t walk into an Indianapolis record shop without seeing a sticker or a flyer of theirs pasted up somewhere. They spent no time screwing around, opting instead to fire immediately into “Hot Chili," followed by their hit “Curio.” The funk-heavy jams permeated the venue, infecting the masses with a jubilation you could not deny. You could feel the floorboards shake from the ripples caused by the audience bobbing and weaving as they danced along to hit after hit. Along the way we got another Dolly number, this time a funk version of “Jolene.” I began somewhat losing my connection to consensus reality at this point. The spinning tapestries done up in rainbow colors behind the band, the heart-throbbing tunes, and the raw energy of the crowd caught up in an explosive lust for the hooks and riffs which make Dizgo iconic, all combined with a brave dose of psilocybin made it nearly too much. I retreated further into the shadows, continuing to nurse my beverage for fear I might dry out. The pit was a sea of flailing appendages and bobbing heads. To the untrained eye, it seemed as though a writhing mob of religious zealots had come to bow before their rock gods, and it was more than obvious why. No one, and I mean no one, commands a room like Dizgo. Forget Phish, forget Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and forget Ekoostik Hookah. Dizgo is the golden god of the modern jam scene, and if I could, I would gladly sell them my soul just to see this set one more time. Lucky for you all at home, you can stream it for free on their Bandcamp. The evening came to a close not long after midnight. Following an incredible rendition of Hendrix’ “All Along the Watchtower," Dizgo bid farewell and left the stage. The audience retreated into the night like a riptide pulling an unwary seagull into the depths of Lake Michigan, leaving me in my shady corner hallucinating a tower of gyrating fractals and wondering why the music stopped. I wandered back out into the lukewarm summer darkness, the smell of pizza and cheap liquor in the air. We had done something good tonight, packed a house full, and drank it dry to help our neighbors in their time of need. What we had was an experience, a come-to-God moment, where we set aside everything that makes us different to come together over community, psychedelic rock, and twenty-minute jams. What’s more radical than that? I pondered this thought as I walked along the Monon Trail back towards my home, continuing to eat psychedelics like they were candy and sipping on a plastic cup of warm rum I had bought on my way out of the venue. 08/28/26 - The Vogue - Indianapolis, IN, by Dizgo13 track albumDizgoBandcamp New & Notable Jul 5, 2018

Slayyyter Brings the WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA to Sold-out Phoenix Crowd
The “worst girl in America” made her way through The Van Buren on Monday, September 14, proving to be anything but as she transformed the venue into the Valley’s hottest dance party. **Slayyyter’s** sold-out “WOR$T GIRL IN THE WORLD” tour celebrates the release of her third album, her first new record in three years and one that has seen major success for the Midwestern pop provocateur. Fans packed the venue early, donning their best Slayyyter-inspired fits. The room was a sea of fur, flannel, custom tees, glitter, short shorts, corsets, rabbit ears, trucker hats, and dollar signs, with more fans dressed the part than not, ready to "DANCE..." the night away. Supporting Slayyyter for the North American leg of the tour is **Pearly Drops**. * * * Finnish duo **Pearly Drops** set the tone early, kicking off the night with a set that felt a bit like a late-night house party in the best kind of way. The lights were low, the vibes were high, and bodies were pressed together as everyone danced without a care to tracks like “Ratgirl,” “Delusional on Sunset Blvd,” and “Kiss Away the Pearly Drops.” The duo’s self-described experimental indie, alternative, pop sound was a perfect fit for Slayyyter’s bill, priming the crowd for the insane energy that was to come. As the crew was preparing for her arrival, a large black curtain dropped, revealing the stage setup for the evening. At the back of the stage sat the facade of a run-down home, much like the one that appears in her “DANCE…” music video. A large, glittery, wooden cross was affixed to the side of the house, the stage was covered in dry grass, and plastic chairs, along with a cooler marked with a dollar sign, sat in front of the home, surrounded by cattails. An old, tarnished piece of a vehicle sat to the left of the house beneath a streetlight, surrounded by tires and plastic chairs, and served as the platform for Slayyyter’s drummer. A clothing line hung above this setup, with t-shirts spray-painted with dollar signs hung up to dry. A carousel horse sat to the right of the home, which was an interesting touch to an otherwise somewhat dilapidated scene. A fan along the barricade shouted, “Time to crank it!” and the whole audience reacted, chanting Slayyyter’s name until the lights dimmed and “* PRAYER *” began to play over the speakers. Lights flashed through the windows of the home, and the crowd screamed as Slayyyter emerged from the front door, immediately transporting the audience into her grungey but glamorous world as she kicked off the set with “DANCE…” Fans went absolutely feral from the opening notes and never let up. It was the kind of show where you leave without a voice. The crowd collectively screamed every lyric throughout the night at the top of their lungs, bodies drenched in sweat as they never stopped dancing. It was impossible not to move as she continued with “OLD FLING$” and “OLD TECHNOLOGY.” I’m not much of a dancer, and even I found myself dancing at the back of the room with everyone else. _WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA_ was the star of the show this evening, with the setlist featuring every track from the album, along with a few unreleased tracks and recent singles that are sonically similar to the record. It has been a long time since I have seen a crowd react to an artist the way that they did on this evening. They showed up dressed the part, and every last person in that room gave 100% of their energy. Just when you thought the energy could not get any higher, Slayyyter hit the crowd with “CRANK” and “crank 2” back to back, and the reaction was wild. She paused the show for a moment during “CRANK” when it appeared there may have been a medical concern, ensuring everyone was safe. When she got the okay that the situation was resolved, she restarted the song, allowing the fans to experience the song the way it was meant to be experienced. The range of Slayyyter’s vocal talent was on display all night as she moved from a gritty and aggressive rap-like sound to a softer, more traditional pop-like sound. She left the stage for a moment, returning in a new outfit, which she noted later that she had made herself. Slayyyter danced atop the carousel horse as she performed “CANNIBALISM!” before moving into some of the softer tracks from the album. While the songs may have slowed down a bit, the energy from the crowd did not. The energy ramped up further as she moved through “I’M ACTUALLY KINDA FAMOUS” and “$T. LOSER.” Slayyyter’s live band continued to jam as she left the stage, returning in a new outfit before closing out the main set with “WHAT IS IT LIKE, TO BE LIKED?” and “BRITTANY MURPHY.” The crowd continued to call her back until she returned for the last two songs of the evening, “brand new chanel$” and “BEAT UP CHANEL$.” It was an incredible performance from top to bottom. Slayyyter’s last appearance in the Valley was opening for Kesha, and in just over a year, she has moved from opening for artists like Kesha and Charli XCX to headlining her own venues. The nearly 2,000 cap at The Van Buren felt like an intimate performance for Slayyyter, who will no doubt be back headlining much larger spaces in the near future. The “WOR$T GIRL IN THE WORLD” tour is sold-out, but if you get a chance to go, I would highly recommend taking the opportunity! It’s a show you won’t want to miss out on.
