Toucan health update, now 5 years post getting covid a bunch of my vitamin levels fell off a cliff and working on that with my doctor. This year has been the worst resurgence of long covid stuff in a while.

craft unions, it does not shock me that a lot of Demsocs first introduction actual more left wing politics just produced a mindless devotion to the idea of anything that calls its self a union.

Really was not news to me as a communist, it is what these kinds of groups tend to do. A lot of grocery stores have different departments under their own craft unions and in my experience often hate the idea of the other workers there unionizing. We want people organizing as a class not competing

The Socialist/Communist left has always been pretty critical of craft unionism though. Criticism of them being used to maintain their own leadership and nothing else is like over a 100 years old. Where I work the unionized workers argued for pay structures to cut other works pay.

SQL, and my attempts to explain concepts like source of truth, and that scripts can't work with "well i just kind of know" and you can't explain how you do that. I can't imagine anyone doing this in their personal life.

that would delineate them from other employees with very similar duties. Just some script in Python/SQL can't do this, but neither could any ai agent no matter how smart, they can't get data that is not there. If you are going to restructure the process to have that data available why not do it in

If the employees carrying out a task the system we have constructed around it has a lot of "well i sort these based on gut feelings and a dozen small things I notice" I recall being told to make a system only have the users who need to use it, but couldn't give me a list of factors or attributes

InDefenseOfToucans @indefenseoftoucans.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Having to build agents at work, the problem is they in theory could be best at tasks that are slightly too unstructured to be easily done with a python script, but you still have to be like 85% of the way there, and the trade off is less deterministic. I never can get my bosses to understand this

Still pissed at the students we had to put up with, never felt like it was slower students who were the problem, but the violent students. Kids who couldn't stop groping other students, or would assault you if you talked to them. I liked explaining things to like one of the kids who was a bit slow

Watching literally everything be called AI, an LLM advocate saying if you have used routing in like in a map app you have used AI as if graph theory and finding the shortest path is not decades and decades old.

"it is not that hard you big babies if you hadn't mostly removed it from your networks over nearly a decade ago you are bad at your jobs, do better" That is what I would say, is that good idk. On the other hand i hate its dying as i can't impress the pentesters with it being gone off my network.

changes and downtime inducing bugs at the same time when you need a new feature. Configs and things are in git. Avoid blackboxes if you can this results in using a lot of OSS. EAP-TLS over any other solution, everything else is more config complex and less secure.

and lots of routing as routing is standardized stacking is proprietary. We just make use of routing over split brain DNS setups or finicky NAT setups. We will ditch NAT asap as it has caused the last 2 network failures we have had. Update often don't sit on old updates then have to eat 6 months of

It is amazing how often in IT we hire new people and they are shocked at the lack of ever any feeling of emergency in our department. You can just build systems that are reliable, avoiding reliance on fragile systems like STP, think about failure modes. We use anycast gateways over stack/FHRP

Ellison and others are very very obsessed with immortality research, I assume because they know they are evil on some level and unlike some of the robber barons who tried to turn money over to the public and churches to get into heaven, they are hoping to avoid meeting their god.

People are misunderstanding Peter Thiel's whole deal about cancer treatment not going anywhere, a lot of billionaires clearly have some very bad anxiety around their own mortality, what he means is he personally has not become immune to cancer because of it so its been for nothing.

I miss the squatters because they didn't want people to notice they were there were honestly the best neighbors i ever had. Ya sometimes people in withdrawals were walking through my yard, but every neighbor comes with some issues, liking mowing at the crack of 6am.

No one refuses to listen to Microsoft and learn how Windows works then Windows admins. Had "linux is a scam" guys holding out into the 2020s saying they only update monthly, all IT accounts are domain admin and people who worked for them rolled by eyes when i told them that is bad

I mostly just read how things worked and what Microsoft recommended i tried to kill off NTLM as much as i could and force resource constrained delegation and IT accounts over to cert auth and having SMB signing apparently made us "good"

Wrong side won the protocol wars and now the internet is doomed, we would probably have mars colonies if we didn't have to deal with NAT because we actually had enough address space.

TCP/IP beat out OSI and now we are stuck with worse networking, so applications are stuck directly talking TCP instead of having a session layer on top of it, so failovers and stuff going a different route can still end up breaking connections.

Easy fix grow and eat more beans, its a good thing Americans always respond reasonably and sanely to suggestions like this and it wouldn't instantly become some kind of conspiracy to kill us all by making us eat beans by George Soros or something.

I would love to just have better class balance and experience with all classes, a restoration of the more Vanilla like lighting system, classic killed some of those ethereal more warm lighting vibes. Maybe take in some of the TBC era zone improvements, I am not really hoping for turtle level content

This is why my team leader does for all problems I ask them. I just get a copy paste of his output from copilot and its wrong like 49/50 partly because he is terrible at prompting so it makes it even worse. Telling me the SQL was broken because it had an * in it, when that is just 100% valid

That they can always contact IT if they think someone is requesting an improper amount of data or in a weird way, sure we have DLP as a safety net, but also just having people who know each other. Also if you aren't running DMARC and detect spoofed emails and block them that is 150% ITs fault

InDefenseOfToucans @indefenseoftoucans.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
Does management frequently write"urgent" emails requesting data out of the blue, well of course that user is going to have a hard time telling that from phishing we worked with managers to avoid wording things similar to phishing emails and data requests should be made person to person.

One that required them to log in a lot and cause fatigue, we tell our users after they log into their computer using their pin for their passkey they should never see a popup for their work accounts again. Times when compliance forced phishing tests on us we passed nearly perfectly

Kind of fits with my mindset on cybersecurity that any attempt to blame endusers is almost always wrong. Management, IT and developers create breaches not end users. Sure maybe they fell for phishing but you are the one who setup a not very phishing resistant auth system.

Oh ya families i knew that raised animals beyond keeping some birds for eggs very much had very crappy jobs during the winter, going and breaking the ice off the water tanks for the cattle in snow storms ect. We did raise and train hunting dogs on the side, but that was pretty easy.

Modern American owning a farm is not even a real job, you sit on your ass nearly all winter, like your busy for a few weeks during planting and harvest and occasionally gotta spray stuff. Vehicle maintenance a bit in the off season. Bad weather typically means day off

Did a pretty damn good job building the .j2 template for the ACLs, and then misunderstood egress vs ingress on ACLs. I think it saves me typing, it saves me explaining some basic powershell stuff to some of my coworkers who need to quickly query AD. Even efficient local hosted LLMs manage that.

We could just mine hydrogen, its down there in the ground, I think its silly for cars, but geologic hydrogen would help us decarbonize industrial processes like fertilizer production, also maybe we could burn it as a last resort power plant if batteries are running low before methane.
