there's a pervasive line in convos about AI use- never use it to replace artists, it should just be for ~stuff like coding~. i hate to break it to y'all, but programmers are workers, too, and we're largely unprotected in the workforce. as someone who lost their job to AI, y'all are dehumanizing us.

if you're going to force staff to use gen Al, at least quit pretending it's good for the planet. either you know better and you're not honest enough to be making Al policy for your workplace, or you don't know better & you're not informed enough to create Al policy for your workplace. /4

plus, now we're going to be burning through our personal need-to-stay-alive resources while also releasing another 10 Al scripts and all the resources the Al model will use to write those 10 pieces of code????/3

like, if it would take my coworker and i two weeks to write, test, and release a piece of code, and it takes the Al ten minutes to do the same thing plus a few hrs for my coworker and i to test/troubleshoot the Al's work, my coworker and i don't just cease to use resources for the next 13 days??? /2

the most deceptive take i regularly see re: genAl is that gobbling resources to do things quickly that would take longer for a human to do is nbd, bc the human would use more resources in that longer time. the human will use those resources regardless!!! to stay alive!!! you've saved nothing!!! /1

imho, skip the cancelnation videos. if you want a detailed rundown of the contents of the dramageddon vid + extremely well-informed context from someone with a long history of reporting facts without any influencer worship, i'm sure @jenluv.bsky.social will have all the coverage you need! /4-end

*comes up for air in the middle of packing* i just saw the preview for the cancelednation doc on dramageddon and my buggest takeaway? proceed with caution. their website shows upcoming episodes on RFKjr, plandemic, elon musk, etc. and the copy Gives Me Pause about the channel's motives. /1

if you're going to do in-person, PLEASE encourage or require masks. We're harming our communities by throwing superspreader events and not creating disease mitigation plans.

idk how big you are, istg it is not cute or funny or supportive or complimentary or kind to show up in ANYONE'S comments and reduce their illness to a magical weight loss trick??? shut ALL the way up

you can always trust that if you see a social media post anywhere where a woman discusses a medical issue that caused alarming, rapid weight loss, you WILL find at least one woman in the comments joking that she wants the same condition so she can lose weight, too

labelling literally every thing that any person might participate in as part of the alt-right pipeline is alarmist and reactionary, actually. is this our yourfaveisproblematic for 2025??? the alt-right pipeline is very real and important, don't dilute the meaning to include everything ever

I’m meeting my older self for coffee tomorrow. I don’t know what she’ll have to say about the state of her world, but I trust her to break it to me gently. She’s always been kind like that.

incipiental @incipiental.bsky.social · 04/03/2025
She finishes her drink and walks outside to meet her ride. There’s no Uber for her to call yet, but I call one for myself. I’m ferried to an Amtrak station she’s never heard of, and I sleep on the train car most of the way home to a city that's never once crossed her mind.

As a parting gift, I offer her a poem I’ve been working on. She immediately spots the weaknesses and marks it up with a shrewd, skilled pen. Whatever edits she makes, we’ll both probably grow to hate the final piece and spend the rest of our lives picking it apart.

She was so sure she could avoid regrets if she was just good enough, and she’s not ready to understand that her biggest fears about me are some of my biggest blessings. Diplomatically, she promises to pray for me. I thank her, and I let her know I thank the heavens for her all the time.

incipiental @incipiental.bsky.social · 04/03/2025
She asks good questions, and she’s smart enough to fill in some gaps in my answers, even when they disappoint her. I’m far from her worst nightmare, but I can tell I’m not the role model she’d been expecting.

incipiental @incipiental.bsky.social · 04/03/2025
She’s less excited to learn that everyone was very right about one thing- she does become a teacher, and she’s good at it.

I say that we get to do a lot of things over the years, and her eyes light up when I tell her that someday, she’ll get paid to write, she’ll get paid to make art, and all those hours coding Myspace pages will help her land a title that doesn’t even exist yet in her own time.

incipiental @incipiental.bsky.social · 04/03/2025
She wants to know which “real job” we landed, eager to show me she’s savvy enough to understand that writing will never pay the bills.

She eyes my blue hair suspiciously and asks how mom reacted when we dyed it. I tell her not to worry about it. Mom will come around on enough of the important things, and the hair dye will never matter.

Tomorrow, she’s spending the whole day with our best friend. I get to tell her that her best friend is still my best friend today. She doesn’t understand why I’m wearing a mask, but she offers to wear one too, if I want her to. She’s always been kind like that. We both order the special.

I invited my younger self to coffee. She apologized that it took forever to email me back, shes been sooooooo busy these days, but she'll make time. She'll have to keep it brief, though- she has plans tonight with our dear friends, who she still calls by names that will be changed before too long.

Locally, I volunteer to help out with an org that helps people transition into better-paying jobs. And while it's not activism per se, I've switched to buying most of my coffee and tea through good.store, where 100% of profits from those items go toward testing and treatment of tuberculosis.

Which existing organizations are we getting involved in within our communities? What problems are these groups solving? How can others get involved? This isn't rhetorical- lots of people are looking for places to direct their energy. Where can they go?

It was really encouraging to see so many people opt-in to the economic blackout yesterday. Most of us are feeling the burden of the current economy and the state of our government at all levels, and it's great to move together as a part of something bigger. But what's next?

i signed up for a trial of @groundnews.bsky.social because i want this to be the year i fix my news consumption habits. super disappointed to see AI summaries all over the place. What an insult to the journalists who wrote the original pieces that Ground News's work is based on.

idk, i remember rachel maddow calling obama a nerd when he was running for his first term. and the kids i grew up with who got into politics later were all some level of annoying for sure. i'm trying to say don't sell yourself short but this feels insulting regardless lol

with bows probably nearing the end of their trend cycle and diy-inspired (lol) personalization like bag charms, mixed-metal jewelry stacks, pins and brooches etc. still going strong, who else thinks we're ready for a revival of gaudy ruffly 80's/90's barettes? i'm dead serious

watching the tiktok ban almost feels like speedrunning the early pandemic. people in denial til the last minute, panicking and banding together right as shit hit the fan, a lockdown period, then people fully acting like the ban went away while a few town criers beg people to remember it's not over.

just wear a mask that fits when you're in crowded and/or public indoor spaces. even when i slack off on my other mitigation methods a little, wearing a mask has saved me from infections multiple times when everyone else around me caught covid. stay safe.

i did not have significant animal allergies before covid. i had great lungs- i swam competitively and played the flute and sang growing up. unless i was having a POTS flare, even my healthy friends couldn't keep up with my lungs of steel. now i lose my breath just walking a little fast.

this was 100% preventable. i was visiting family, they wanted to do karaoke. i was the only person in a mask. i eventually took it off bc no one in the bar could hear me and I was getting frustrated. now i will have this allergy- which keeps getting worse- for the rest of my life.

it is my duty to remind ppl every so often that in 2022, covid gave me a dog allergy that is rapidly getting worse. i always had dogs growing up, now i take 5 medications just to visit my sister and her dog, and i STILL feel miserable.
