Part of what happens with this strict separation between "policing" and "immigration enforcement" is the refusal to connect the dots on a child being shot in Mississippi and a father being shot in front of his child in NYC because this Black guy happens to be from Senegal.

I still have Julia.
A sun-drenched photo of a Julia barbie doll. Julia was the title character of a 60s sitcom played by Diahann Carroll. She is wearing a smart orange skirt suit with yellow buttons on the jacket, a yellow scarf tied around her neck, a pistachio green knitted toque, and slate blue "lace-up" boots. She is sitting in a rattan peacock chair. Next to her is a narrow glass pitcher (human size, not doll size), that is a play of light and shadow on the wall behind it. The scene is displayed on the dusty top of a dark brown bookcase.

Here's an encore... #PleaseClap #Comics #Dementia
A four-panel comic by @inasketch
Ink & watercolor
Panel 1) Mom and I in the garage. She's leaning over her table saw and I'm waving my hands in a "No" gesture. The top text box reads: "Yesterday my mom couldn't remember how to turn on her table saw." Mom says, "I think it's this button right here." The bottom text box reads: "I convinced her not to use it."
Panel 2) Mom and I are outside under her fuyu tree. I'm holding a long 2x4 that I'm trying to fit under a branch for support. Mom has her arms raised in a guidance gesture. She says, "Over just a little more." The bottom text box reads: "We were making supports for the fuyu's fruit-laden branches."
Panel 3) I've gotten the board in place and turned to face my mom. I say, "That was hard. I want a little applause." Mom, clapping, says, "You deserve a beer."
Panel 4) I'm in a grocery store, in the beer aisle, reaching for a bottle. The top text box reads: "Later that day, shopping at Tokyo Central with my daughter..." My thought bubble reads, "Hmm... Nice idea, mom."

Kind of a dumb one, but my daughters & I enjoy The Big Year and would love to see it with a female cast. So, topically, I'll pick the cast of 9 to 5, with Jane Fonda playing Steve Martin's role, Dolly Parton playing Jack Black's role, and Lily Tomlin playing Owen Wilson's role.

Heh. #wrongtakeaway I read this and thought, "Wow, they make five different sizes of chocolate eyeballs? That's commitment to the bit." The following paragraph (not shown here) clears it up: five different size *packages* of eyeballs. Oh well, a girl can dream. 🎃👁️🍫
A screenshot of text that reads:
Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs
On Aug. 31, Crystal Temptations recalled five sizes of its Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs because the products contained whey, a milk-derived ingredient that was not disclosed on the packaging. People with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity could experience a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the candy.

A four-panel comic by @inasketch
Black ink/fountain pen line art
Panel 1) Looking up at the Twin Towers from below.
Panel 2) A woman with a bicycle over her shoulder descending flights of stairs. The text reads: "one time when i worked on the eleventh floor in an art gallery on 57th street, we had to evacuate because of fire. i carried my bike down those eleven flights. i think about the firefighters who flirted with me that day."
Panel 3) Philippe Petit walking on the tightrope he rigged between the two towers in August 1974.
Panel 4) A woman wearing an I <3 NY shirt stand with her hands in her pockets, with the New York skyline behind her. The text reads: "from the supreme court installing bush to the towers coming down to war propaganda and torture and televised bombings and executions to conspiracy theories, america lost its mind twenty years ago and we still haven't found it."

Also a single mom, I had a one year old and a home daycare. It wasn't until the first mom came to pick up her baby that afternoon and said, "You don't know what's happened, do you?" that I heard about it. I waited until after I put my baby to bed that night before I turned on the news.

One of the times my mom visited me in college. It was the first I'd heard of polar vortex. She has dementia now, otherwise I would ask her what the hell is in that bag & did she really drag it all over New York?!
A woman stands in heroic pose (or braced against the wind?) on the docks in NYC with water behind her, and behind that, the skyline of lower Manhattan, including the World Trade Center. She is bundled up against the cold, with a scarf covering the lower part of her face. She holds a very large bag at her side.A woman with hat, scarf, gloves, and long coat sits on a low wall in front of the World Trade Center. She waves to the camera. Next to her is a very large bag.

This reminds me of going to PS1 Museum in the previous century, before their renovations & merger, when you'd walk down the hall, see an abandoned piece of rusty equipment and a shredded extension cord and wonder if it was part of the art installation. Ah, the good old days. #Art

It's a lovely rainy morning in southern California. Here's a comic I made when I first moved back here. Now that I've been back for several years, the thrill of a rainy day has returned. ☔ #comics #ArtOfBluesky #ItNeverRainsInCalifornia
A four-panel comic by @inasketch
Ink & watercolor
Panel 1) A woman stands looking out a window. The text reads:
"It rained last night."
"Since I'm staying at my mom's, I instinctively went to the window to check the gutter."
Panel 2) A young girl in pink pajamas looks out the window* at a car approaching the gutter swelled with rainwater. The text reads:
"Growing up here, it was a big thrill when it rained enough to flood the gutter."
Panel 3) The girl jumps excitedly, with arms and braids flying, when the car drives through the flooded gutter making huge waves, The text reads:
"It was especially exciting when a car turned the corner."
Panel 4) The woman from the first panel, now outside in a yellow raincoat, with an umbrella, doing her best impersonation of Gene Kelly's dance, splashing water with her foot along the curb, and singing, "I'm singin' in the rain..." The text reads:
"After years of living in New England, it's funny to me that rain was the big weather event as a kid."
*It's the same window view in panel 1 and panel 2, but my mom remodeled at some point. So the current window (panel 1) is fancy with brown wood, an almost a bay window shape, and a curtain across the bottom half. The old window (panel 2) is flush to the wall and painted off white.

Before I read the text of this Mike Luckovich comic, I noticed the similarity of its composition with a panel from a four-panel comic of mine that I made in a Friday Night Comics workshop a few years ago, illustrating some song lyrics we chose. Of course I chose Townes Van Zandt. #comics #whiskey

Panel 1) A man in a blue flannel shirt spilling his glass of whiskey, drunkenly stumbles into a table, sending the whiskey bottle flying. There is a chair knocked over on the floor. The text reads:

Panel 2) Now he's stumbled into the bedroom where a woman is sleeping. He says, "tell me where to lay my head"
Panel 3) She wakes and says, "not with me" and the text reads "is all she said"

Funny, I made this comic about the creepy sexualizing of robots, and now it looks like the last panel was prophetic. #comics #art
A four panel comic by @inasketch
Panel 1) guy on a date with a cylinder-shaped robot. He says, "I thought you'd be more attractive when I agreed to this date!"
Panel 2) The robot replies, "I am a fully functional I-25 prepared to satisfy your needs. Why do men always imagine robots as sexy young women??"
Panel 3) The guy responds, "But... But... Casella, Rosey, Seven of Nine, Kristanna, Fembots! I want my dream girl!!"
Panel 4) The robot has shape-changed into his mother, and says, "Junior! Don't be disrespectful!" He falls out of his chair, "AHHHHHH!" The text reads, "Is that better?!"

A four-panel comic by @inasketch
Ink & watercolor
Panel 1) In my mom's living room. I'm standing, holding my coffee cup. Another woman is sitting on the couch. Written in cursive over the scene is: "my mom and my stepdad's sister were having a discussion that sounded dangerously political. my mom turned to me for help. so i asked our houseguest the important question that no one else had asked." I ask, "Are you vaccinated?" She responds by asking, "Are you?"
Panel 2) We are now face to face. I say, "Yes." She says nothing (there's a word balloon with three dots).
Panel 3) Same scene as above. I ask, "ARE YOU?" She says, "No I'm not and I never will be."
Panel 4) Close up on me. I say, "At least now I know what we're dealing with." She's morphed into a maga hat, and asks, "What are you dealing with?" I say, "You're sharing a bathroom with my daughters who've only had one shot." She says, "There is no pandemic. I saw on the internet that one of the vaccines is making people sterile." I say, "I'd like to make some people sterile."
