There's a story here. One of the best things about working with Cas is that I'm always finding new depths in our sessions. With @theythem-mayhem.bsky.social

Our current era of "contemporary country" needs to die a fast, ignominious death.

I hate it when photographers don't tag models. I hate it even more when a "photographer" says they left the name off because the model no longer claims the work. If they don't claim it, you shouldn't publish it.

More experiments with double exposure, medium format, and lighting. There's actually a little more meaning behind this set. After two unexpected major surgeries this year and six weeks of forced home time with another six weeks of taking it easy, I've had a lot of time for self reflection.

The fun thing about the original RB67 Pro is that it works very well for double exposure. The frustrating thing is that it can be very easy to do unintentionally. This is a case where I wish I had both the mistake and the intended images.

Taken on the Staten Island Ferry in 1999, I keep coming back these images. They're difficult to print in the darkroom, almost as if the memories don't want to be unlocked.

This was a fun diversion on our way to the next location. We were also chasing sunset *and* my ability to shoot with the RB67, which had Portra 160 loaded. My SL2-S and lights were back at the car, so I metered and hoped for the best.

Let's talk about Ava and her hat. It played its own supporting role in this collaboration.

Another series I'm looking forward to putting out into the world... but this time, it's a return to digital. We'd run out of daylight, so I grabbed the SL2-S for the final location, and it's fun to screw around with LUTs again.

I experimented with double exposures on the RB67 in my last session with Cas. I’ve still got technical details to work out to nail them in future shoots, but there are some real gems from that afternoon.

I should post more of my Maine photography here. If you follow me on IG, you've seen some of it, but I don't share a ton because I have this weird fear of being pigeon-holed as a landscape photographer. Anyway, these were made on a Voigtlander Bessa I with Portra 160.

Cas and I made so many wonderful photos in this shoot a month ago that I hardly know where to start. It's nice to be collaborating again.

When film makes the outtakes better. Switching to this (with some digital in the mix) is really forcing me to think about all aspects of my workflow, and I love it.

It's a little funny when people come to Maine in June and ask where they can pick blueberries. It's also a little sad that we start getting them by the Fourth now. When I was growing up, it was three weeks later.

Taken in 1999, the negatives had suffered a little, so I had to pay extra attention to the balance of exposure time and contrast to make these prints.

Why do photographers do this? Skin should have texture. Clothing should catch light and have real shadows. Using the maximum filters to create flattened, plasticky "photos" loses both the art of the body and the magic of light. Art should celebrate imperfection and humanity, not this.

Taken 33 years ago, printed this week, scanned today. Scanned prints are far superior to scanned negatives, unless you have a drum scanner. This and other prints will be available on my website soon.

Bill LaPete owns one of the few darkrooms in town. He's got decades of knowledge, but he's been laid up for months following a hip injury. I had loaded the first roll in the RB67 before I went to the darkroom that day and asked if I could take his picture. I can't imagine a better first photo.

You'll hear photographers talk about making photographs, but the real making is in seeing the image, knowing how to expose a negative, and understanding what it will look like on paper. Pixels distort our way of seeing and damage our understanding of the magic that happens between light and paper.

People who expect perfection from film photography and think of it in pixel terms are idiots. The grain and imperfections are part of the point.

Republicans want to disqualify Platner for where he masturbated when a Marine and it reminds me of two things. One, the Annie Hall line about how jerking off is “sex with someone I love” and two, Trump sexually assaulting women and bragging about it. I can’t take GOP outrage seriously. #mepolitics

So I picked up this mystery of a camera at the recent Photographica show — a Mamiya/Sekor with no markings and a lens that didn't match any I could find in the listing of M42 lenses. It was in one of the "junk" bins, but I was curious enough to give it a try.... and the results with the first roll
