Isaiah dares us to see the world and our lives NOW in the same terms--to know that God's love reaches out to ALL peoples, and that breaks open the old "me and my group first" thinking that we keep falling for, time and time again. beinggraced.blogspot.com/2026/10/for-...

Morning Chores a poem for October 9, 2026
Morning Chores
a poem for October 9, 2026

Wring joy, yes, out of darkness
like juice squeezed from a lemon
and allow its bright aroma
to permeate the kitchen air.

Raise the flag which declares
love is our homeland
and to that kingdom alone
pledge your allegiance.

Deliberately reject
the empire’s terminology.
Call things what they are even if
it gets you labeled “enemy.”

When they want your eyeballs for
televised crucifixions,
refuse to watch—do not let them
make brutality entertainment again.

You have better things to do than
sitting in the coliseum,
and the tickets always cost you
something, no matter what they’ve said.

Buy less. Give more away.
Stand out in the shaft of sunlight
that kisses your face through the trees
while the cardinals sing our anthem.

Recommendations a poem for October 8, 2026
Recommendations
a poem for October 8, 2026

The way
the golden hour light on the leaves
almost makes you forgive the world
for all its frequent cruelty

the way
the faintest scent of burning wood
tells you that autumn has returned
and asks of you to savor it

the way
the mist rises on the river
and the roadside ponds like sea smoke
and makes you grateful for the chill

the way geese interrupt your train of thought
honking their horns above traffic
to turn your head and make you smile

the way
not a bit of it is for sale
or turned into data to feed
artificial intelligence—

if you are looking
for recommendations
on which way to point your feet
or where to give your allegiance,

head in that direction.

The central "salvation" event of the Hebrew Scriptures is the Exodus, in which God not only saves the Hebrews from slavery and the clutches of Pharaoh, but also protects them from the plagues, delivers them from the Sea, and gives them a new way of life. youtu.be/4Zv8jd5_vAg

We don't dare say that our most important achievements are "rubbish," because we have a hard time believing that grace really does get the last word, and that in the end there is no need to prove our worth--only the free gift of grace that was yours already. beinggraced.blogspot.com/2026/10/jesu...

A faithful congregation member made an observation today in conversation in the church office this afternoon, prompting this doodle. Don't weaponize the Bible. When we lob Scripture at people like a hand grenade to attack them, the Word has a way of coming back at us like a boomerang. Amen and amen.

It's just not worth it to play, "Prove Your Worthiness to God," for two reasons: for one, none of us can rack up enough piety points or righteousness rewards, and more importantly, because we never needed to earn what God was already giving away for free. beinggraced.blogspot.com/2026/10/step...

What is God like? God is exactly like Jesus. That’s what scripture says. We didn’t always know that to be true, but now we do. Who would Jesus kill or bomb or execute? Nobody. The followers of Jesus follow Him & let Him be the key to understanding scripture.

Isaiah a poem for October 1, 2026
Isaiah
a poem for October 1, 2026

“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”

The question hung in the air like smoke,
and the seraph hovered at my side

burning wings aglow like embers
pulsing with light as they beat the air

and then addressed me in a whisper
like a confidence between old friends:

“Before you answer, be aware;
know what you get yourself into.

“If you go, it is only as a poet,
 entirely unarmed, save for speech.

“Their hardened hearts will call you soft,
and they think listening makes them weak.

“Heaven is not recruiting warriors.
You will be given no weapons.

“We are not recruiting for an army.
You are not sought to kill an enemy.

“The work is more like smithing,
  forging possibilities with words

“like fashioning plowshares out of swords,
  transforming adversaries into friends.

“But the Holy One never seeks crusaders.
Do not answer until you let that truth sink in.”

And I said, “Here am I; send me.”

a poem for September 29, 2026

Two white cabbage butterflies
are dancing in the open field
twirling around each other
like binary stars in the spacious dark
and paying me no attention
as I walk beside them flittering in the grass.
They need no other ballroom—
who would dare to box them in?

From there stalks of wild rye give way
to pine rows that form a cloister,
gothic arches where boughs touch hands,
as sparrows pray the daily hours
and green light filters down to kiss
a carpet full of soft needles below,
this patch of ground already hallowed
without the building of a shrine.

And all of this reminds me that
in truth the only golden age
any of us ever needed
is the week that comes each October
when locust leaves turn deep yellow
and fall from branches into heaps
like coins spilling from a treasure chest,
priceless, because they are given for free.
