Photos: Gaza mothers endure endless lines as famine fears persist aje.news/r6by7h
Niyaha al-Masri, a 35-year-old displaced Palestinian woman from Beit Hanoon, waiting to receive food for her family at a charity kitchen in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. [Bashar Taleb/AP Photo]Niyaha al-Masri spends six hours or more in a queue at a community kitchen in the hope of getting some food for her family. [Bashar Taleb/AFP]Her husband, wounded in both legs in an air strike, “cannot go and fight with the others” for food, she says. What little flour they have is carefully rationed. Her eight children, aged three to 14, “dream of eating fruit”, but the family cannot afford any. [Bashar Taleb/AFP]In August 2025, the United Nations‑backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared a state of famine in Gaza – an assessment Israel denounced as a lie. By December, the UN had lifted the declaration, saying the "ceasefire" had allowed in enough aid over two months to ease the worst conditions. [Bashar Taleb/AFP]

Who gets to be a traitor?
When Pauline Hanson labelled SAS veteran and Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie a ‘traitor’ eight times, then animated the insult and pinned it to the top of her social media feed, she did more than provoke outrage. She exposed the conditional nature of Australia’s reverence for military service and revealed how brittle our nationalist mythology becomes when it collides with powerful, wealthy political interests.
