It's World Space Week, and we've learned that we could have micrometeorites on our roof right now. We have to agree with this student, that is awesome! #WorldSpaceWeek @stemlearning.bsky.social
The chat interface graphic contains chat between a scientist and student, the student is asking about meteors heading towards us. The scientist reassures the student about danger but tells them there could be micrometeorites on the roof of thier building right now!

It's National Coding Week and in one of this week's chats students learned how coding is interdisciplinary, enjoyable and perhaps a little addictive while chatting with our computer scientists! @wearecomputing.bsky.social
The graphic is a chat window within which is a section of a chat between a student and a computer scientist. The Scientist recalls how they got into coding and how this was during studying biology. The scientist says they were hooked after a code course for girls.

One of our moderators just noticed this interaction in the last I'm a Scientist Chat of the academic year and we agreed the student's summary was the perfect message to take into the summer!
The image is a graphic of a chat interface within this the student has asked how the scientist thinks they help the world with science. The scientist replies that they can by writing up work and making it publicly available. The student's reply is that the world can be a better place because one human has knowledge about science. The scientist replies again about the collaborative nature of science.

It is the last few days of term before the summer holidays and the last thing we expected was a reference to Olaf from Frozen! We really enjoyed the student’s creativity in their response to the scientist’s answer in today's Motions and Forces Chat.
The image shows a highlight from a chat in an I'm a Scientist chat window. The student asks about forces: 'which do you prefer push or pull forces?' One scientist answers: 'can't have one without the other every action has an equal and opposite reaction'. Another replies they like pull forces because they enjoy a hug. This leads the student to ask 'How closely would you associate yourself with Olaf from frozen?' to which the scientist replies with they still haven't seen it.

To continue with the theme of thank yous for #VolunteersWeek, here is one from the students. Our volunteers engage with students who might never otherwise connect with someone working in STEM. They show them the variety of careers available and help them feel that STEM is something for them.
A decorative image featuring a student quote on a purple background. The quote reads: Thanks, everyone. It's cool to know that all these degrees exist. I'm realising that I don't actually know about all that many! The image is branded with the I'm a Programme logo.

It's Earth Day! There's a Post-16 STEM Chat happening right now on the I'm a Scientist platform. Currently students from Milton Keynes College are chatting with Martin, Peter, Alison and Caroline. As usual there are questions about the scientists roles and how they got to where they are.
Students are asking about whether the scientists work in the field. Alison replies saying she works in the lab and the field.

Advent day 23! We don't share the age of students with the volunteers on the I'm a... programme. This is because questions can vary depending on age and ability. You might hear us say 'if students want more information, they will ask for it'. This is a really great example of that.
Student says they don't understand Konstantina's job. She explains that she selects materials to use, the method and how they test to make sure it works properly. The student follows up asking for more information about what a composite material is.

Advent day 22 It's great to see conversations being 2 way. The engagement goes beyond a Q&A and turns into a proper conversation. By asking a question back to the student, Rosie was able to extend the interaction.
Student asks what inspired Rosie to become a microbiologist. Rosie wanted to do a job that helps people. She asks the student what they want to be. They want to be an engineer. There is a back and forth about why and a discussion about favourite cars

Advent day 16 Jamie, event manager, really enjoyed this moment from yesterday's neuroscience Chat. Lily asked a question but peer Daisy wanted to know more information.
Student wants to know how the diet affects day-to-day mental health and emotions. Ellen says that there are a variety of mechanisms which could include changes to inflammatory pathways and interacting with the gut brain axis. A different student wants to know what the guy brain axis is. Ellen says it is a term to describe the communication between our brain and gut.

Advent day 15 Computer science joke anyone?
Student asks for jokes. Henry says how many software engineers does it take to change a lightbulb? None that is a hardware problem. Gareth says why do programmers prefer dark mode? Because light attracts bugs. Ranjini says there are 10 types of people in this work. Those who know binary and those who don't.

Advent Day 5 This is a moment from a Chat with John F Kennedy Catholic School, who have been using the project since 2015. It highlights how the I'm a... Chat platform can support students to feel like they are having a 1-to-1 conversation.
Student and scientist are discussing black holes, white holes, and theoretical physics. The conversation starts with 'more532dows3' asking if anything that goes into a black hole comes out anywhere else. 'sraimundo' confirms that nothing escapes a black hole. 'more532dows3' then asks about white holes, their properties, and how many have been found. 'sraimundo' explains that white holes are currently only a theory with no observational evidence. They discuss how the theory, if correct, would change the understanding of black holes and space, suggesting matter could be transported across the universe and black holes could shrink. The conversation ends with 'more532dows3' proposing a hypothetical scenario where a white hole and a black hole interact, and 'sraimundo' responding that it is an interesting scenario but they don't know the outcome, suggesting the other user should become a scientist to investigate it.

Advent Day 2 Hannah, Project Support Officer, has chosen this moment from our new project I'm a Geographer. She enjoys how Tom, Paul, Franziska and Alex were able to bring geography to life for the student. They left the conversation feeling that geography can be interesting!
Student asks what made the geographers want to be geographers. There are different replies like loving maps as a child, never really planning to be one, loving watching David Attenborough and the mix of interest. The student replies that geography now seems really interesting.
