What it can't do: anything drawn on a canvas. Google Docs, Figma, most map sites. There's no text or background there to recolour, so those stay bright.

It can turn itself on at sunset and off at sunrise, calculated on device from the time zone. It never asks for your location, because it doesn't need to. No account, no tracking, no servers, no analytics, no AI. Nothing about your browsing leaves the device.

Pure black is genuinely #000000, so on an OLED iPhone those pixels are switched off rather than lit, saving you battery. Pages also arrive already dark. No white flash while one loads.

Light pages go dark without being inverted, so images and video keep their real colours. Four levels of darkness, from a soft grey through to pure black. Seven levels of dimming stacked on top of that.

Most dark mode extensions do one of two things. They invert the page, which turns figures and photographs into negatives. Or they lay a flat filter over everything, dimming the text exactly as much as the background behind it.

A full-width white article at 1am is a lamp pointed at your face. The problem was never that web pages are light. It's that they're bright. Those are two different problems, and iDimIt is a Safari extension that treats them separately.
