We've just added support for chapters in metacast.app. We support the chapters tag from RSS feed, parse time codes from descriptions or generate them w/ AI. The end result - any episode has chapters with an easy-to-use, consistent UX. Try it and let us know what you think (we think you'll love it).

@justinjackson.ca I’m wondering if a solution to DAI could be markers in the audio files inserted by podcast hosting along with dynamic ads?

6/ We had our moments of mutual pain and even frustration with each other, but if you know that the person's core and ethics are compatible with yours, you can overcome all those challenges.

5/ I co-founded metacast.app with @arnab.metacast.app who I'd known for 8 years and worked with directly for 5.

110

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 07/02/2025

4/ None of that is knowable ahead of time if you don't know the guy/gal and haven't worked with them. I've personally long hesitated to start something precisely because I didn't have anyone I could be confident in.

3/ They must have your back at all times.

2/ People are all cool and nice when it's rose, gold, and unicorns. But shit will get tough at some point. You want to make sure the person will be able to stand up to the stress, the grind, the crises, the public humiliation, you name it.

110

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 07/02/2025

1/ When looking for a co-founder, my personal preference is to only work with someone I've worked with before. Otherwise, you don't know what you're getting into. 🧵

On our share pages, you can also go and listen the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. We're not limiting it to Metacast, because we're thinking about the user whose friends might use a variety of podcast apps.

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

We've removed "Listen on Metacast" because it was making the snippet too busy and potentially deterring from people from clicking the link.

100

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

We've just made podcast sharing a tad cooler. When you share a podcast on social media, the snippet is short and sweet. We only display what is necessary - the cover, the title and the sexy blur behind the image.

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

Funny that it was written by a science correspondent. The internet was something scientific back then.

9/ Every piece of infra you use must have a budget. Ignore this at your own peril. 🚨

000

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

8/ At that point, we’d either have to pay up or try negotiating with Vercel to reduce or forgive the bill. Either option sucks.

110

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

7/ Now, imagine a nightmare scenario. A crawler hits our whole site in a few days. At the end of the month, we get an email saying our transaction for thousands of dollars can’t be processed. Because we don’t have that kind of money.

100

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

6/ Worst part? It's not even real users generating this cost. It's mostly web crawlers that go deep into the site and access the long-tail pages.

100

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

5/ At full scale of ~100M episodes, we'd be looking at a $500K bill just for image optimization. 😵

100

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

4/ This said, Vercel charges $5 for every 1,000 images optimized. Optimizing 1.4M images from third-party sources would've cost us $7K. As our directory grows, so does the bill.

110

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

3/ Unintentionally (for lack of understanding of the scale), we set up image optimization in Next.js. All images served on our site are downloaded to Vercel, resized, optimized, and only then served to the user. Great for performance! The pages are snappy.

110

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

2/ We added a directory of podcast episodes on our website metacast.app. Right now, it includes ~7K podcasts and 1.4M episodes. Each page has an image served from a third-party host.

100

Ilya Bezdelev @ilya.metacast.app · 06/02/2025

1/ Always set budgets for metered resources on your infrastructure! Yesterday, we discovered that we hit our $25 spend limit on @vercel.com. If we weren't careful, it could've spiraled into $7,000. Here's what happened. 🧵

Why don’t you just unfollow someone whose views you don’t agree with? I mean. This whole American politics on social media thing would be childish if it wasn’t so violent.

Thank you! On the podcast, we also referred to this part of the journey as the "zebra." We're not sure if it's white with black stripes or the other way around. But it's definitely not uniform lol.

It's great you're recognizing that the form of expression wasn't perfect! IMO what you sent to Pieter is not as bad as sharing the screenshot of what you sent to him. It comes across as virtue signaling and engagement bait. Am I judging? Of course! We all are 🙈

I had a nightmare last night. I was stuck in an endless loop of refactoring. I made code changes but each iteration created a bug somewhere else. Doesn’t this look like the reality of the software development process?

We've just shipped an inbox feature for our podcast app Metacast. When a podcast you follow publishes a new episode, it pops up in a special playlist. The Inbox facilitates a "triage" workflow to help you pick episodes you want to listen to and purge the rest.
