Ok, now I have spent well over 5 hours on getting TLS working on Oracle 26. I think it is working now. And I'm pretty experienced on TLS, even on Oracle. Will continue with mTLS tomorrow... and then I'll also spend 5 minutes on setting up TLS on Postgres.

By "replica lag" I mean the time the written data from primary is successfully queried from replica.

Ilmar Kerm @ilmarkerm.eu · 08/09/2026

Measuring PostgreSQL read replica lag (hot standby) with synchronous_commit=remote_write. To estimate the write lag on replica when preparing to turn on pgDog query load balancing. At 1400-1500 write tps, single thread, 60min test run. Need to investigate these tail ends.

No, “cheburek” is not local food at all.

These Brits claim “Uzbek plov” is local Estonian food? Doesn’t it say right in the name that it is Uzbek? youtu.be/usA93ivLMN0?... and coming from unbearable heatwave complaining about rain and cold. And I’ve only watched 2:40 so far.

Exceptionally slow coffee machine on Sõru-Triigi ferry, mine took like 1 min. The silent passive aggressive queue forms, the silence and looks… and the next 1 min brew starts.

Another unintuitive temporal nugget. Documented ofcourse. EXTRACT() from TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE returns values in UTC!

I so much hate when someone (more managerial) send a page - "I generated this using AI, please fact check it". I always end up deleting all/most of it and rewriting since the information is just wrong and it uses so many words. Huge waste in time and resources.

The dreaded PostgreSQL "cached plan must not change result type" and connection pooling (pgBouncer). Looks like I have to build something that notifies pool that DDL has happened and reconnect backends. Or pgDog, but then I have a CREATE ROLE notification problem. Could contribute to pgDog.

that is true, especially with default 8k block

Ilmar Kerm @ilmarkerm.eu · 22/06/2026

Cool, managed to find the limit of bigfile tablespace (in 16k block size database). "alter tablespace dw_etl_data maxsize 65t" - ORA-740 datafiue size of xx blocks exceeds maximum file size

Yeah, cross border ones are expensive. I ordered a big truck that will move things over the sea, and then order one local company to move things from container to 3rd floor in Tallinn. Without a lift :)
