"Since WWI, capitalism has responded to its structural contradictions through war: not only war as an event, but as a permanent regime, with a tendency toward global civil war. It is precisely within this complex scenario that the emergence of artificial intelligence must be situated."

"There are very few voices in our field capable of seeing the whole picture and what’s at stake: the future, and nothing less. Leijia Hanrahan, through a layer of wit and sometimes withering irony, could see that future." – Kate Wagner, architecture critic for The Nation

"If the Marblehead Bonfire is less well known than the Boston Tea Party as an act building toward the American revolution, it is perhaps because the target of this act of property destruction was not unjust taxation on colonial merchants, but the property of wealthy colonial elites themselves."
On the night of January 26, 1774, about twenty people from Marblehead, Massachusetts rowed out to a small island where stood a privately owned, for-profit inoculation hospital, and burned it to the ground.

The few who were arrested after the fact were jailed in nearby Salem — a notorious British loyalist stronghold. Hundreds of people from Marblehead marched to the jail and broke them out. Salem's sheriff then raised a posse of five hundred men to invade the neighboring town and bring the arsonists to the law's version of justice. In turn, the people of Marblehead raised their own posse of one thousand to defend a different and deeper principle of justice. The sheriff, wisely, let the matter drop.

This happened a year before and less than thirty miles away from where the opening shots of the American war of independence were fired at the battle of Lexington.

Six years later, there is still much we can learn from the George Floyd rebels. This quote is from an original interview in the upcoming No Bad Protesters: Ethics, Social War, and the George Floyd Uprising by Arturo Castillon. Pre-order your copy today: store.illwilleditions.com/products/no-...
Silhouette of a protester raising a fist against the warm glow of the burning 3rd precinct in Minneapolis at the start of the George Floyd uprising. Text reads: "A lot of people just didn't realize it could happen at all, that it would happen so fast, that it would happen spontaneously, that it would bring people together, that it would give people more space to gather."Dark high angle shot of a crowd outside the burning 3rd precinct. Text reads "Some people think it was all terror, and scary, and nothing got better. That's just a lot of the propaganda keeping us from realizing what we did, preventing us from thinking about what we’re gonna do if it pops off again. If there’s another riot, what do we do next? What do we do instead? How do we hold ourselves together so that we don't fall apart as soon as the state falls apart?"Crowd of people casually hanging out in the street as fires burn in the background. Text reads ""You know, some people just don't really have the idea that this happened, but it'll happen again. It doesn't matter what you think. What you think will not stop an uprising from happening in the future. Because if people have decided as a mass, as a group of 1000s of people, to shut the city down, you know, you can't really stop that." - MAYA, Minneapolis, MN, age 19. Quote from No Bad Protesters: Ethics, Social War, and the George Floyd Uprising by Arturo Castillon, forthcoming from Ill Will Editions
