I think the summary for this one is too long for bsky so, instead. Here's Chapter 10: The Bird and the Beast archiveofourown.org/works/722720...

Yeah, I agree. It gives the events some level of authenticity and security that first person doesn’t provide. These aren’t events that are maliciously being misconstrued, these are events…sorta. Biases and misinfo still are a huge part of third limited hut like, yeah.

Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Shit I just realized, I misread your meaning here.
120
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
But if you want a story that purely revolves around one person’s detachment and dissociation from themself, second person is. a really interesting choice for it
020
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Granted, third person limited also can ebb and flow. If you need to convey the dissociative detachment in third person, you can get it across too with third person limited.
120
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
And the benefits from second person in this scenario is that you can switch to ‘I’ much more naturally when ‘I’ decide not to detach ’myself’ anymore
120
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Because ’you’ can be observing ’yourself’, you feel me?
120
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Although I somewhat agree, the benefit of third person limited for me is that personal feeling. Because if I wanted to give the detached-self, impersonal, “oh fuck something’s up” feeling, I’d use second person
120
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Third person limited’s, admittedly, quite similar. You are slightly more detached but it’s still very close. The key there is that you are allowed to use a lot more dramatic irony and show how different people view the world, whereas first person is limited to the ‘i’ narrator
230
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
But, yeah, the big thing to remember for first person stories is the unreliability. You are filtering the world through this person’s eyes, thus all their bias comes through.
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
You, notably, can combine the two, just make sure you have a special indicator to denote when leaving and come back to first person happens (not x’s pov, just something simple like a special line break).
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
To be fair, this is also important in third person limited, but it’s especially important in first person (especially if it’s not a combo third person limited and first) as they are the only voice you get.
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Really, it depending on the needs of your story. If having the point of view tied down to your first person narrator is important, then it’s important to lean into their unreliability and bias in most situations.
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
First person, however, also happens to have a pretty high skill floor to do it well, so like. yeah, it’s not as simple as slamming down the ”i”
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
I should specify here that I mean one character’s thoughts, since third person limited tends to give access to many people’s thoughts. both of which lead to great instances of unreliable narrator, but I believe the inherent limitation of first person is interesting to explore
130
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
It’s a trick you can only really do once in a given story—but goddamn if done right it can really fuck you up. Especially if it’s to display a dissociative state, or there’s a big Reason why the narrative is referring to “you” rather than “i”
020
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
Second person prose, on the other hand, is almost always invasive and intentionally so. You Did Not Do This yet the story say you did which creates a fascinating dissonance while reading it
220
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
For me first person prose can be likened to reading someone’s diary, or like having full access to someone’s thoughts while having a level of separation between reader and character purely based on the fact that you are Not this person.

Volume of inspired fics, not Never Left Behind specifically.

Out of the ones I am Mostly keeping up with—blame classwork for lack of time—My favorites are: Heiress to the Overlord and Blackbird. Never Left Behind is also very cute—but given the volume I. haven’t had time to keep up. You could also read mine if you so wish—it’s linked on my bsky.

Very glad you enjoyed. Chapter 3 is one of my personal favorites because it’s kinda where I’d figured out how I wanted to portray Dream. As I mentioned in the note, I relate more to Still, which made Dream more difficult to get into but after chapter 3, it got much easier.

She hasn't formally introduced so far in the chapters that are out but that is (hopefully) changing! So look forwards to that.

I may have been. Unconfident. at writing Rob Roy at that point in time—and then the chance to properly introduce her kinda slipped away for a while so uh. Oops. this has changed so uh, hopefully soon.

Ah yeah I forgot to mention this part since it just kinda slipped in terms of like. When writing her dialogue it’s just something that becomes second nature so I ended up forgetting to mention it
020
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Oh wow, okay, I genuinely missed that while reading her campaign in that I always read her using it in kanji in the brackets. Interesting to learn.

Alternate universes as in aus, not alternate uni's
000
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Oh yes, and final note: She calls alternate universes "anotherverse(s)"
100
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
And something that I actually forgot when I was starting to write my fic, the like all caps acronyms always have 'these' around them like her technical terms
400
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
But also not all the time. Emphasis basically.
100
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Back on the bracket talk, sometimes it'll be one word, sometimes it'll be a whole phrase, but I, personally, see it as like. Any phrase or important word in the dialogue gets the brackets basically
110
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Combine that with a general sense of floatiness, and dialogue that seems somewhat non-sequitur but clearly connects, and some stiltedness (alongside the acronyms), and well. That's Uni dialogue
110
Ainsel @illindus.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
As for general notes on how Uni talks, she'll often go use unusual kanji or like rarely used words to mean their simpler synonyms. So, in english, you'd want to translate it as her using a lot of big words
