Awesome! I have always wanted to to Inktober, but October is always a very busy month. I think I may challenge myself in January.

I have seen several studies like this one, the water in coffee offsets the diuretic effects of caffeine most of the time. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... The idea that it is dehydrating is dated.

I would never disqualify a candidate based on coffee. That is wildly petty. I am on a hiring committee right now and we all had water bottles and coffee during interviews. We offer candidates a bottle of water before the interview. Let people hydrate!!!

Have you read Radical Infrastructure? It doesn't have answers but at least it is asking the right questions (as you are): www.ucpress.edu/books/radica... The history of the internet chapter was nuts. I don't think the Fascism in tech is remotely new. Owning the metal may well be the only option.

I was happy to get it, it was about the only exciting thing about turning 50. Just keep a light schedule the next day in case it hits you hard is my advice, I was so sick.

In rural Michigan it is 90 dollars per night plus fees to board at our local kennel. So 150 doesn't seem too crazy. But it is a lot, no doubt.

Accountability won't stop the concentration camps. If you can't support disbanding the secret police that is ICE, I don't want to vote for you.

Honey bees didn't seem affected, our hives were flying as usual, so maybe native bee were fine too. I was surprised.

That even if we hold a reasonable election, the elected won't restore our democracy or change things to prevent the fall into fascism but instead act will like everything is a-okay since the grifters/evil doers are out? And will neglect to hold the grifters/evil doers accountable? Yeah, me too.

Yeah, I miss the loop around the pool too, someone would be in front of ConSuite or hanging out in front of a room party and you could just run into people. The circulation of the new hotel is not as good. The new hotel is better in other ways though.

I think about the "Dean Scream" a lot these days. I think that would be a great series of interviews.

I have ridden in that banana car, he was giving rides outside an ice cream shop. He just took tips, no charge demanded and kids loved it. Not a creeper the way the article implies!

It is a fun game! And kind of tricky and easy to overthink. I did poorly at it, I can't remember my exact score but it wasn't in the top third, for sure.

The BTAA Geoportal, digital archives, library websites, etc. are having to insert that human confirmation because we keep getting sites taken down by swarms of AI corpus creating bots. Yes, they work. And blocking IP addresses from China and India also helps, which I do not like at all on principle.

I am all for swords in department hallways. A colleague had an article which was peer reviewed by AI (the hallucinated reference recommendations were a tell). For some reason folks in my department are appalled at that, but are a-okay with using AI to write annual reviews. Just infuriating.

Good essay. Have you read "Panic Now?: Tools for Humanizing"? If you haven't, I suggest it. It is a short book, kind of in a Dark Mountain vein. And it contains a good discussion of AI, he touches on things I haven't seen elsewhere.

Yeah, Google is deliberately wrecking search to drive people to use AI. I switched to Kagi. Kagi is like old Google (my only quibble is it has some problems with very current events).

Monopolies disincentivize nice things and useful new tool use. Why innovate or make things nice if you already have the market captured?

Their actual question: When will the Democrats transformation into Regan era Republicans be complete?

Democrats really should take note. Democracy and following the rule of law is a kitchen table issue now, here in the US as well.

So... why no articles of impeachment? Or a motion to use the 25th amendment? You, a congress person can do these things. Why are you talking like you can't? If you can't who can?

Why do y'all keep posting this? It seems like an advertisement for a tax preparation association. I did my taxes like I always do and it was as stupid as it ever is, not any worse (except existentially, not practically).

This isn't going to help anyone. Now they can manipulate footage with AI to counter observer footage and observations. Like they did with a photo of the detained reporter Nekima Armstrong to make her look like she was crying. And record observers to be added to the surveillance database.

ICE Out? No. We are saying Abolish ICE. And if you aren't for eliminating ICE I don't want to vote for you. ICE can't be reformed. ICE is a recent department (Bush II era), its duties can be covered by boarder patrol and other agencies, agencies that can't be as easily turned into secret police.

Here here. I am so tired of people saying that demanding a candidate you actually want to vote for is the equivalent to a "circular firing squad" and dooming us to a Republican win. I think the opposite is true, this is what democracy is.
000
Amanda @ilexv.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
If you are not for abolishing ICE then you are not pushing for real reform and accountability. We have immigration enforcement outside of ICE and can create a better regulated alternative if needed, the same way ICE was created in 2002.

Thank you Senate Gabe. I don't know how I started following you but it helps to read your posts, it is a good sanity check that I am not nuts for my perceptions of Dem ineffectiveness and collusion. My friends are like "but they are in the minooority!" and giving them a pass. It is disappointing.

It was on my radar they would surge here because they want to provoke something so they can justify using the insurrection act. Trump hates Gov. Waltz, it is a place with many immigrants and has a history of aggressive protest (George Floyd). People are being peaceful in their protest so far though.

Is it though? As it is, all the democrats looks spineless and oblivious to the seriousness of the situation. And given all of the garbage going through Congress I'd say wasting time is a-okay and they should be doing more of it.

I don't give a damn about the price of coffee. I am primarily worried about our democracy evaporating. Talking about "kitchen table economics" makes democrats look petty in light of what we are facing as a country.

Gender is one of many stupid reasons. This map is interesting - Elon Musk's grandfather on his mom's side was involved in the Technate movement. Matches up well with the places being targeted, I wonder if it is an influence. digital.library.cornell.edu/catalog/ss:3...

This is a proposal (a terrifying one, because I expect they are going to extend this to citizens travelling out too eventually). There is still time to object. Hopefully tourist industry groups throw some money around to block it (since that seems to be what it takes these days).

The Graeber (and Wengrow) book is good. It almost made me want to teach anthropology again, just so I could use the book in a class. My primary critique is that it did C Crumley dirty, one footnote at the end when they were basically using the same ideas the whole time is bs.

And also, the Dems should feed people! Free pancake breakfasts in impoverished areas instead of attack adds. Hand out donuts at local concerts. Campaign volunteers also working at food banks. The DNC should be committed to doing good things outside of government to demonstrate their values.

And the Great Lakes, so the middle of the country. People forget that as well. Chicago falls within the 100-mile zone that is a maritime border on the Great Lakes. So the border laws apply there too.
